Panda (Classic) Hal, the turquoise Selecta: Once more unto the breach, dear friends!

Introduction

Named after [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_V_of_England"]King Henry V[/ame] (Prince Hal, for those, like me, who are Shakespeare addicts...) -- not the computer in Kubrick's masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey -- Hal (see the number plate...), I'm hoping, is the Panda of my dreams. For someone who said he wasn't going to buy any Pandas, this year -- but I would buy either a Selecta or a 4x4, next year... -- I'm doing pretty well.... :D

No new photos, beyond those in this how-on-earth-did-I-end-up-with-a-third-Panda thread: as there's nothing new to show, really; and I was too tired to take photos of the engine bay... -- so apologies for the disappointment. Hal does feature a full complement of tools, under/around the spare, though, I can reveal; as well as a stonking new battery; and a very slow oil leak (possibly from the rocker cover...).

As you'll have seen from the Auction Watch thread, I had to catch a couple of trains to get to Hal; followed by a gentle walk through the suburbs of Birmingham (where Hal seems to have spent all of his life...). The guy selling the car then took me to the Post Office to get a new tax disc, and to the local factors, to get the battery. (What a star...!) He even wanted to make sure that all the fluid levels, etc. were okay, before I set off...! :worship:

It comes with most of its old MOTs -- showing the following mileage progression...
  1. 08/1996: 10,970
  2. 09/1997: 14,397
  3. 09/2001: 24,965
  4. 09/2002: 27,252
  5. 01/2004: 27,584
  6. 01/2005: 34,693
  7. 01/2006: 42,205
  8. 01/2007: 48,929
  9. 01/2008: 55,391
  10. 01/2009: 60,597
  11. 01/2010: 65,560
  12. 01/2011: 70,107
  13. 01/2012: 75,179
  14. 09/2013: 78,084
...so it's been in pretty constant use; but nothing too strenuous! :)

It also comes with two copies of the Owner Handbook -- as did Pippin -- both identical: neither mentioning either the 1108 cc engine* I'm fairly convinced it has (see below); nor the injection light, on the dash (that does work... -- also see below...).

Anyhoo: never having driven a Selecta in anger, before, I have the following comments:
  1. It's more obviously CVT-based than Priscilla: making a lot more fuss (i.e. piling on the revs) before the actual speed catches up. It does this quite noisily, at the moment (but then quietens down at speed....) -- which I hope will be helped by a new bucketful of gearbox oil... -- but I wouldn't be surprised if the clutch will need replacing soon. We shall see....
  2. Frell, it's powerful... (well, as much as a classic Panda can be, without an engine transplant...) -- especially compared to Pippin... -- and it seemed to have even more pep than Pinky: so I'm assuming this is the 1108 cc engine* -- especially as all the plastic stuff under the bonnet is dark blue. I found myself cruising at a measured 75 mph (sorry, officer...) all too easily; and it is very relaxing to drive on the motorway... -- if a little less engaging (if you'll excuse the pun...).
  3. The injection light came on momentarily, just before the services on the M42, so I left the motorway, intending to stop: only for the light to then go out, as I slowed down. So I went back onto the motorway, keeping to about 65-70 mph; and it never reappeared.... I'm hoping this was just a minor glitch, caused by the fact that it's been parked up for a few months -- but any advice will be gladly taken. Hopefully, whatever the 1993 equivalent of OBD will reveal all (or, even better, nothing...) -- if there is such a thing.... I will investigate....
  4. The brakes are also more reassuring than any other Panda's I've driven; and the suspension seems fine (if not as tight as Pippin's all-new stuff...). (y)
I'm therefore hoping that this turns out to be the bargain of the century... -- but we shall let VmanC be the judge of that! :slayer:

Overall, I'm incredibly chuffed. The bodywork, sills, etc., have obviously been fettled at some point; but it feels solid, generally. I just need -- with Vernon's help, probably -- to sort out the aftermarket washer jets; although I think I shall leave the aerial where it is, for the moment.

Immediate plans include changing the engine and gearbox oils; coolant, air filter, etc.. I shall then, hopefully, give Hal a darned good clean, inside and out; before taking him to Vernon's.... Eventually, I may source a new HU, and add in some front speakers. I'm quite tempted to leave the slight variations in colour (346: Turchese, I believe...) as they are, though: as this will be my go-to Panda (with Betty being for special occasions; and Pippin, obviously, going to the homewardette...) -- and I quite like what I think of as the 'patina of honesty'...!

Watch this space...!

* Just found a piece of paper with the engine and chassis numbers -- along with the following text: "1108 cc" and "29-4-93". There you go, Most Easterly Pandas...! (y)
A week Monday I would hope.

That would work well: as Tuesday, 29 October is one of the days I've been offered an appointment for.... :)

When will you know for certain...? And, Palio: will you be around that morning (29th)?

I think so, but we probably need to swap Pinky & Howie (in an ideal world Pinky has to go down to Vernon, and Howie back here if he's back on the road) around that time anyway. I'm assuming it would be too much for you to drive Pinky down to do the swap, so I'm not suggesting that. Is there scope for me to drive you down in Pinky, then give you a lift back to PR to collect your Punto after your appointment? It's probably not feasible, but give me a shout if there's anything we could arrange as it might help your back & give me company (I miss the radio if I'm driving alone).

Ahhh,

Thanks, Gavin...! (y)

It's probably too complex; and banjaxed by the fact that I usually stay in Salisbury, the night after seeing my consultant. However, if I set off Vernon-wards (no relation), before you do with Pinky, am more than happy to collect the roof bars and seats....

How does that sound...?

Just checked the notes on my phone, not sure the exact date, but like I said was within the last 2 years. Clutch part number 71790547 £67.87 (Trade, I'm fairly lucky with my parts man at my local dealer) - this was based on 1108CC setup, but I think we'd come to the conclusion Hal was anyway didn't we? Not sure if it'd be different for the 999cc Selecta or not.

Thanks, Jon -- again...! My dealer (Grays of Warwick) has just quoted me £81.48 for the clutch kit, plus £14.98 postage. (I shall be collecting: as they're not that far away.) It will be in stock tomorrow...! :worship:

Even if I actually don't need it now, will probably need it eventually....
VmanC: will bring it with me, next time I visit you...! (y)

Just managed to get onto ePER; and found that the part number for the clutch is supposedly 7667609.

Am now slightly confused -- as I picked up 71793495 (the replacement for 71790547) from Gray's, this morning: but stupidly didn't look in the box, as I was starting with a migraine (which I'm still suffering from...). :(

I shall have to go out and look at it, tomorrow (it's in the boot of the Punto, waiting to be tranported to Vernon's...) -- but I'm half expecting it to be a 'traditional' clutch that greets me...!

If anyone can make sense of this, please feel free to do so: as my brain seems to be currently made of scrambled eggs....

This is semi serious - what does the powder clutch look like compared to a normal one? I'm not sure if I'd know the difference if it landed on my foot!

The semi unserious bit is that I do have visions of a police dog searching your car for little bags of white powder hidden in your clutch.... :)

If ePER is anything to go by, a powder clutch looks a bit like a biscuit tin lid, with bits attached (no.6 on this diagram...)! :D

However, I have this horrible feeling that I will be greeted by the traditional plate and springs arrangement, tomorrow....
Most Easterly Pandas -- where did you get your part number from...?

You'd know it as its 4 times heavier than a normal clutch and would brake your foot, and the laminate flooring your standing on in e kitchen at the time :p

Now I've just started to worry homeward, as that's the part number my guy at my local dealer gave me with the price and I'd not checked it, jut assumed it was the correct one. Luckily I have in the shed a knackered Selecta clutch (not sure why I've not chucked it, but it's now come in handy).

Next post from my phone will be of pics I've just taken, part number I origionally gave matches and shows box and clutch unit itself (y)

Well, the box looks the same! :D

It wasn't that heavy, to be honest. Oh well, can always take it back...!

Thanks for doing this, Jon: I owe you a cider or two...! :worship:

My photos to follow, sometime tomorrow...!

That's ok, tbh you really had me panicing thinking you'd possibly got a manual clutch, at least if you have now it's not our fault and you can show the pics to prove it :p

Sorry about that....

I was thinking the same, re the piccies (so a big, big thank you...); and will save them to my phone. To be honest, Paul, the parts manager at Grays, is a decent chap; and little seems to faze him -- so we'll get there in the end, if it's the wrong clutch (which I am beginning to suspect, just from the weight...).

I don't really know -- apart from the fact I was running late for an appointment, and felt like crap... -- why I didn't open the box, there and then. Usually, I am utterly anal about these things.... :bang:

Cock.

Much as I find release bearings beautiful (sad, but true...), even without Most Easterly Pandas' photos, I could tell this was a manual clutch, the moment I opened the box. (And it weighs just about as much as you'd expect such a thing to weigh, strangely enough....) :(

Two odd things, though:
  1. If you put Hal's VIN number into ePER, it takes you to a manual clutch set-up.
  2. The replacement part number for the (correct, original) one Jon provided is listed both online, and in FIAT's database (I checked, with Grays), as being the one I received.
Anyhoo: I have contacted Paul, at Grays, with comparative photos; and will wait for the correct part to arrive. It probably won't be here before I head down to VmanC -- but I don't think he's in any hurry for it...! ;)

Watch this space...!

At least its not an error on our part :)

Still frustrating through :(

Interesting the Selecta clutch in in theory cheaper than a manual one though, normally as soon as you mention automatic the price increases over a manual version lol.

I note your use of the words "in theory"; and will wait to confirm this is the case, when I have the correct part in my hands...!

I have to agree, though, that it actually seems a far simpler (although rarer) component: it just depends how much FIAT think they can get away with charging for a tin filled with magical fairy dust...! ;)

Anyhoo: as always, you were right all along! But it won't be the last time (from experience) that I've ended up with the right part number, but the wrong part (hence my usual paranoia...)!

Dam it, if its any consolation, I also had the wrong parts deleverd this morning.

I'm afraid it is some consolation... -- but I empathize strongly. At least I am in no urgent need for my clutch.... (Yet.)
