Panda (Classic) John Dragon Man's 4x4 Sisley

Introduction

Hello!

Well, I have been waiting a long time to do this!

Introducing (Drum roll please!).....

Edit: about half way through the time it took me to get the car on the road it found the name Talon. So everyone Meet:
Talon. My Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley:

Great Looking car.. As i am sure you all agree!

It has its Good points:

No Horrid noises in any gear and the 4x4 system works and sounds brilliant! Its a Sisley! And it came with some nice extras such as the light grill covers.

and also nice low mileage.

And it has its bad points... Lots of bad points:

Mid body rust, This is the worst on the drivers side (in the UK) front wing:
attachment.php

The Doors are Rusty.. Ok, i did expect this as it seems to be a common thing on most Fiats over 10-15 years old:

And the other Door, Not as bad.. I may be able to save this side!
attachment.php

"Phantom Electronics" the electronics do what they want to do, when they want to do it. No Switches necessary!

Also the Fuse box now lives here :( That means that a flap has been cut in the pocket :(
attachment.php

The Exhaust is very broken, in multiple parts. even the down pipe!
attachment.php

Lastly and by far the worst, Under body rust. Now its not as bad as it could be. The rear sills on both sides have a small 1 - 2 inch hole in them. No biggy.
I have still yet to remove all the plastic wheel arch liners and have a proper look.
Here's a picture from the front drivers side wheel arch, its only a skin so a easy repair:

A bit of work needs doing to the brakes, pads i think. The fluid needs changing and the drivers side front brake pipe is corroded so i will replace that.

Also the engine needs a good cleaning up, a full on service replacing the water pump, cam belt, tensioner pulley, distributor cap and rotor arm, filters, oil, radiator, coolant and starter motor.

I also need a few things like a locking filler cap, the little clips that hold the air box together, a new boot gas strut and a non damaged back bumper.

Its the car I have always wanted right from when I was a young lad. So you can imagine how I was when I won it on eBay for a grand total of £547. Getting it from Wales To my home town of Derby Cost me £135.

With some love, care and late nights I reckon I can turn it into a cracking motor!

Oh and stay tuned as I will be keeping a Video Log of what I will be doing to the car on Youtube!

This is the video i took just as the car transporter left from delivering it:

I am so very proud to be the owner of a Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley!

:D:D:D

Edit: this is how Talon looks now:

:eek::cool::cool::cool::yum:

Since then Talon has gained more lights, and now has some blue rust free Seat Marbella doors. I had also converted him to Fuel injection, however the parts i used were old and worn so now it is back on Carburettor.

This thread has its ups and downs but through the years Talon and myself have pulled through.

When you are done reading this thread, be sure to check out the little red scrap yard rescued Seat Marbella thread and also Project Fallout!

Peace all and enjoy the thread, videos and pictures!
Flippin eck John!

You have done more to your Sisley in the short time you have had it than I have done to mine in the last 7 months of it sitting on axle stands.

Do you want to come to Chesterfield when you get bored in 1 days time when you have finished yours?

You are more than welcome........and the rust ain't as bad as yours.

Dave

hahaha sure, when i am on the road and yon panda car is all MOTed and running good i can pop up no problem!

i am having issues with idling :/ if i leave it to idle for a while it eventualy stalls i am wondering if i upset something when i took all the carb to bits. adjusting the mixture screw does nothing :/

in other news...
i shouldn't.. but ive got my eye on a real nice Selecta.. old woman has it and she only uses it on sundays to go to church in but she is on about giving up driving as she cant see a thing, poor lass.

one owner from new.. 32000 miles, and not really a spot of rust on it.. not even the doors :O i think its a fuel injected one too..
and the icing on the cake.. because i do some gardening and computer maintenance for her and the fact that i am a "nice young lad" she has told me that i can have it >_< i was like omfgwtfffff!!!! free non rusy panda selecta?
she wants the garage taking down and a small natural pond putting in its place. so wants the car gone.

time will tell with it.. i really need to sell the PiNK Cinq lol

Hi Dragonman

Congratulations on the speed of your progress! I can sympathise with the "Son of a female dog" inboard driveshaft gator. I was changing the clutch on my Y10 at the weekend and had exactly the same problems. Only goes on one way round, fiddly little bolts that wont seat or screw home properley. Couldn't understand why it was being such a pain. Glad its not just me.

Did you sort the ignition module (that square box) in the end? That's usually prime suspect for any stalling/cutting out/dodgy spark/rough running/general world strife with the 4x4. Even a new one can be faulty as I found to my cost - both in money and sanity terms!! I believe it controls all the sparking & those cassette points, so if it goes awol the car's never going to run properly & will eventually stop completely (with a loud bang & cloud of smoke in my case ). It usually gets worse as the module box gets warm in my experience - they do get very hot even when working correctly, certainly hot enough to burn you if you're particularly stupid

Dodgy fuel pump is quite common too, and could cause something similar.

Mixture screw wont affect the idle did you mean adjusted the idle screw?,
did you check/set the floats correctly?
Also the idle feed tube normally draws from the lowest part of the carb so it can be affected by muck easily, draws the muck up blocks the jet then settles back in the bowl when no vacuum drawing the fuel.

i cant see the carb being blocked.. damn look at video log 14! the carb was full of crap and it ticked over smooth as anything. infact better than my cinq and thats all electronic!

what ever im going to have to take it all to bits again. thats going to be my grump today.

heres my latest video log, if you fast forward to 8:00 mark i give a very little walk through of what the carb is doing now.

the new fuel filter is doing a superb job

with the mixture screw, no matter where i put it, it makes no difference to the way the engine runs. unless its screwed all the way in in which case the engine gets no fuel and does not run.
remembering how far out the screw was before i took the carb off it was turned out quite far! so i set it to around where it was before.
when it does not flood it runs real nice :/

like i said i think its the floats getting jammed open. i dont think theres a right and wrong way to put the float needle in but my guess is its that thats stuck open. i'll have to check it out tomorrow.

peace guys! sleepy time for this one haha

John
Its possible it may be the valve that acts like a toilet ballcock under the float thats knackered, this will cause flooding
By the way thanks for the offer on coming up to Chesterfield, but it ain't got no MOT, no back axle, wheels, fuel tank or brakes and only half an exhaust. Other than that its fine

oh right.. not much wrong then.. not much at all :/ heh. yeah the float valve thingy is what i was getting at. thanks for the heads up!

bells ringing here, if you've had the carb apart I seem to remember having a similar issue when I refurbed mine, daft thing but if you get it wrong there's a bit of the gasket that can catch the needle valve and stop it closing. I'll pull apart a carb later and see if I can remember what it was..

Here we go. If you do the obvious thing and put the gasket on the base then put the top on top you get this:

But the highlighted section of gasket needs to tuck under the float pivot here:

So when you put the top on with the gasket the wrong side it exerts just enough pressure on the float to stop it closing the needle valve.
Just a thought.

Thanks for pointing that out i never thought about that tbh!
ive already seemed to fix the problem though before seeing your post :/

i did some tests with a long clear pipe filled with fuel and the carb sat in the vice, level.
attached the clear pipe to the fuel input and watched the fuel level go down in the pipe as it filled the bowl up. well i watched it keep going till it came up through the float bowl breather vents.

so i unscrewed the top to get access to the bowl chamber and just bent the little bit the float needle clips on to a little so the needle sits higher. sure enough that worked when i tested it again. stuck it on the car and as soon as the bowl was filled it stated and ran with no spluttering or rough tick over. i should really video it.. hmm. meh ill catch it on the next video log. just ordered some thick walled replacement fuel line as the stuff linking the fuel filter to pump to carb is well past usable running life. so not putting the air box on ... juts yet. soon as i get the replacement line ill stick it on and then the engine work is done!
still unsure about that water pump.. ill keep an ear out and listen for any changes. i love non interface engines :)

also today, as most panda owners know. the door cards on the old panda always ware through at the top when the front and back are "glued" together. well i spend the rest of the day gluing (with super glue.. works well on the plastic sisley trim) all mine back together in 1 to 3 cm sections so i get a great finish. again i'll add it to the next video log.

Jobs a gooden! i am so looking forward to driving my panda.

John.
Don't forget to pass your special 4 x 4 Panda driving test below.
1) Make sure the gap is big enough before leaving a roundabout.
Why because when you go from 1st to 2nd you will have moved 3 feet.
2) Have a loo roll handy
Why because a 40 foot artic will frighten the pants off you
3) Have some tank tape handy
Why because your passenger ( if going in a Panda for the first time) will be screaming.
4) Only go on the motorway when its sunny.
Why because your only front wiper blade is bound to fall off if its raining
Happy days Dave

please, you've obviously never ridden a geared.. restricted moped! 1st to 5th in 10 feet, max speed 35mph if your lucky!
not only that, but try the 899 cinq.. thats fun! the panda has GOT to be an improvement!

besides we've had a panda before, just i was real young. got us all the way do to brands hatch.. in the rain.. lol that was fun.

Wheel spins ftw!
@ £140 for a set of 5! branded tyres you dont really mind the odd spin

well today i have fitted the back trim panels inside the car as i have waxyoled all the inside of the drivers side sills, the drivers side rear quarter, the boot hatch, the boot lip and the passenger rear quarter!. all with a home made Electric pump and nozzle!

i am rather chuffed as well im getting to the end.. actually i'm rather sad... i like working on the car. everything is bolt on..

ohhh to have unlimited funds and a army of pandas to keep on the road... would be my ideal job >_<

oh and i got those things you sent me Jon, not yet fitted them as i have lost my H4 bulbs LoL they will turn up.

ive got a video, but not yet got it off the camera and rendered/uploaded it yet.

As you know 1st gear on a 4x4 is very very low geared, so my tongue in cheek statement of 1st to 2nd in 3ft should have been a bit more.
I was trying to give the impression of FEAR as I have on many occasions pulled out of a junction as a boy racer has nearly hit the back of the car as I changed from 1st to 2nd and virtually stopped in his path.
If you are getting the rain we had last night you had better get the Waxoyl out
