Scudo Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary.

Introduction

OK - I hate the term 'surf van' - but this is kind of what this van is going to end up as.

But rather than JUST being that, it's also my daily drive and needs to do all the other stuff that vans are good at - like tip runs!

Anyway - it's a 2002, ex council van with 43k on the clocks - a few light scrapes, but overall in great nick :

Whirly roof thingy is an added bonus to keep the air circulating - especially when I sleep in the van! :

The back originally looked like this :

The ply lining kit was first to go :

Closely followed by the bulkhead - and then a quick clean :

Next to go (for now) was the cab headlining :

"Flashband" added to reduce panel vibration (cheap alternative - but effective) - can't beleive there's NO sound deadening at all in these vans! :

roof21.JPG

Foil backed bubble wrap is my first insulation layer - reflects the heat both ways to keep the van cooler in summer and warmer in winter - tried and trusted!

Whilst I'm waiting on a full-length rear headlining, I've just added the "Flashband' :

Next to come out were the front seats (with one bolt taking longer than the rest combined, in true DIY style) :

With the floor up, more "Flashband" applied :

And finally given a good clean :

That's about all for now. I'm waiting on some rear plastics out of a combi, plus the rear headlining.

Once the van is fully "Flashbanded" and insulated, I'll start with the cosmetics.

The headlining (front and back) will be getting a complete re-trim in something bright.

The plastics will either be getting just a good clean, painted or re-trimmed, depending on how good they are.

The remaining metalwork will be getting fully carpeted.

A ply floor will be going back in, covered in black Altro flooring and I'll be making a rear-facing seat / storage box that converts into a bed.

I'll add to this thread as I get things done........ :slayer:

So, today I have been mostly carpetting and insulating. I finished off the roof with foil backed bubblewrap and then put 'jute felt' over the Flashband on the rear arches - this will be all hidden by the combi rear plastics that also arrived today - pics of all that lot when I've done a bit more.

In the meantime, I also carpetted the cab area.

I used a carpet square from my local trimming supplies as follows :

Take a 'carpet square' (£10) :

Throw it roughly into place to take a few measurements :

Trim it to shape :

cabcarpet3.JPG

Tidy up the edges by simply cutting over-sized and then folding the carpet back on itself (don't forget the relief cuts on internal curves) :

cabcarpet5.JPG

Tidy up the mini-bulkhead with an off-cut :

cabcarpet4.JPG

And put all the seats and trim back in :

OK - it's not really much more than a very big 'carpet mat' set - but it cost far less and makes the van less 'van-like' :)

I guess it does help to have been an ex-Bentley interior trimmer in a former life - but if really isn't that hard - so any questions, please just ask :slayer:

Cool im subscribed. When i sold my old bravo I was looking to do the same with a Ford Transit Connects but they where too expensive for me.

Are you going to rust proof the underside, fill the sills with wax?

The undersides are pretty mint, TBH - but I guess the arches (now I've jet washed them) could benefit from a good undersealing......

All in good time though.....

Glad so many people are enjoying the thread...... more to come at the weekend, hopefully (y)

Not really done much recently, as I've been working.
However, got the majority of the first layer of insulation done - using the trusty old 'foil-backed bubblewrap' on the panels and some 'jute felt' on the arches. There's 'Flashband' underneath all that lot - but you've already seen pics of that, and it kind of looks the same.......

The felt on the floor is just temporary to keep the noise down a bit.....

And to show that this van still has to earn it's way - here's it doing a tip run!

OK - I spent some of yesterday T-Cutting the van - but no pics, as a clean white van is still just a white van ..... but I'm currently working on some ideas to brighten it up a little on the outside.

However, today I went and collected my E Bay bargain of the year - an Ikea sofa bed in very nice condition - for £4.99!

The mattress stuff is FAR too heavy for my liking, so will be getting replaced with foam at some point, but I'll secure the frame to the bulkhead bit and it's a VERY cheap rock and roll bed solution!

You'll notice I've had to test fit with my interior plastics that I also got off E Bay - a bit more pricey at £60, but far neater than ply lining and will look fine once they've been resprayed.
