This isn't a thread to promote hate / wars.. But my own personal feelings.

I'm 18, the peak at which you should be having fun and.. me been into cars in a big way.. modifying! But I just look at other cars and laugh, I think how tacky they look etc.

I know it's the same old, I wanna be different, but I look at my car and think, Fiat spent millions on making that car just the way it is, with fair more knowlegable people than I ever will be. So why the hell should a lad who only has a couple of a-levels and an ONC under his belt start playing with it?..

Admitidly I have my CD Player and I have my speakers, but I dont wanna go any further.

Have I grown old before my time?

Discuss..

Nope not at all! Everyone is individual and express this in loads of different ways! To me, it's kind of a hobby to work on a car, If you're happy with what you've got, you've acheived success in what you've got:)

I probably don't make sense but you've reached your goal! and you're definately not going old before your time!:)

I agree with what you have said but I am a very "boring and sensible" 18 year old who does "very boring and sensible A levels" in a boring and sensible way. Therefore not sure how far my opinion goes...

I feel, yeah, fine, CD player speakers add to your comfort and can make a big difference but anything else - I stress in my opinion - is just too superficial for my liking and is a large expense for little benefit. I guess it depends on what taste the car is modified in; a spoiler on a 1000cc town car doesn't look right but maybe adding subtle alloys might?

Most things you see have been cheaply and tackly done with little effort or the effort has been wasted for no gain.

Just my thoughts :)

As with the others, I believe each to their own when it comes to your car - it's your own personal haven so you can do with it as you wish. My own opinion is that I want to make my car what is, in my eyes, attractive to look at. As it has a small engine, I also want to get the most amount of power out of it as I do a lot of motorway driving in my work. The one thing I don't bother with is the stereo because a. it has enough power for my needs and b. if I change it for a commercial one instead of Fiat standard, it's liable to get nicked.

If you look at your car and think that it is attractive and feel that it has the right level of power and manoeuverability (sp) for you then why bother changing it?

I liked modded cars when done tastefully. But I don't have one really, aside from a few little things. Agree with the others, when it's done to your liking it's done, end of.

At the end of the day I'm pretty boring student too and as long as it looks respectable I'm fine with it. I'd never buy a car that didn't look good as standard though.

I agree that tasteful mods are best...but the again I cant really see the reason why I put a wing on the back of my Cinq, but it seems fitting in a perverse sort of pisstake way....

But now Im finding myself more interested in unseen modifications...like engines!:)

I can't stand overdone cars as they're, to me, tacky and mostly hideous. Baby, on the other hand, loves tacky. :D

Depends. If youve got the money to get a proper bodykit, get it sprayed and fitted profesionaly then go for it. i think they can look great on some cars. but I dont like it when cars are inbetween and they havent painted it properly or its standard bumpers with huge 18" alloys etc.

With my uno I think it was reasonably done. i tried to stay away from the tacky mods (sorry but the spoiler just had to go on :p) but with my next car (Cinq) im gonna be alot more subtle and probably just swap the bumpers and skirts for arbath or maybe the storm1 kit as its similar but with arbath skirts. then get the arbath spoiler, 14" allots and lower ir 40mm. looks great and isnt tacky atall :D

I do like mods, they just have to be done right.

I think that cheap cars with mods done in a random kind of a way with no real thought to the look as a whole look really tacky. If you want a car that looks good and is fast, buy one. Don't buy a basic model and try to eeke some more power and add cheap spoilers etc. My own Punto is not modded. I have added a CD changer for my pleasure, but otherwise I see no need to mod my already nice car.

Yer subtle is the way to go.....my chink only has refurbed standard alloys, spax suspension kit -40mm, Stainless system, and light smoke (legal) window tints. I have also upgraded to a MP3 Player and 6x9's, fitted a quality clifford (cat1) alarm......and in my oppinion the car is finished. I will do no more to it now, I will simply drive it.

All good,

Adam

I think there are several types of modders, the majority here fall into the catagory of making a few discrete, tastefull mods, often using standard Fiat extra's. Such as alloys, a spoiler, sideskirts, colour coding, I personnally like this, it personalises your cars and enchances its standard appearance.

I've seen many motors on here that are excellent, tastefull examples of this.

What is ridiculous tho, as a few have said already is the boyracer brigade, with there Nova's & Corsa covered in half finished, ridiculous and random mods, usually with a car that is scruffy to begin with!

At the other end of the scale tho, is the big money boys, the 'fast and furious' type, some of these cars are done to an amazing standard and are undeniably awesome, but, they are show cars, not everday cars, you can't create the same effect on a Corsa for a few hundred quid and then drive it to work everday, know what I mean?:D

Hei.

Modifications should have a reason. OK, it looks cool, but - a reason.

Why alloys? It looks good, ok, but it also takes a great deal of stress of the rest of the car because of lesser wheight. So there is a reason - and therefor it is a clever idea to use alloys during winter as well due to more uneven roads. Larger alloys again leads to lowering, because they imaginary tend to rise the car an inch or two.

Why lowering? It usually looks looks good but will make standard wheels look very sad. Road performance will be better, so it has a reason.

Window tint also has a reason, it's comfy and again looks good.

My opinion is if it just looks good it has nothing there to do. As tons of external styling on low performance cars. It's ok to make a personal touch to a car, but stand with two feet on the ground.

Morten.

abarth alloys, steering wheel. inter alloy lowering. phoenix gold audio. refurnish.

projects: induction. seats. exhaust. tinting.

i plan on doing a lot to my car this year with the theme being Alfa Romeo bits subtly blended in (door handles side repeaters etc).

Met Cognac 99 Brava 100 HSX, wish it'd clean itself!

surely the idea of buying a car is kus u like the look of it 2 start with =|, im prob the biggest hypacryte in the world 4 this, but nice and small lil touches always go the furthest, i was flikin through max power (god 4bid) other day, an this bloke had kitted this ibiza so much it didnt evan look like 1, an he was proud, i jus dont get it

I sat behind a modded 306 in East Ham Town Center today. It was jumping up and down at the lights, he obviously thought he was showing off but he looked an absolute ****.

Alloys, stereo, nice exhaust. That does it for me :)

Another day...another problem...

I think on some cars, Fiats in particular (not just because this is a Fiat forum) less is definitly more.
For instance, on the cinq and punto, i personally feel that "lip-spoilers" if you will are better than the huge wings you see. There is a clio at my college with a full on table bolted on the roof, and i always think, 'are you ever going to go fast enough for that to be properly effective??'
then there are wheels, my cinq sporting has standard sporting wheels, which are ok, but stick some little abarth badges on the centre and then lower the car and it looks fabulous on standard wheels! i love the look and sound of my car from just some minor vinyls and an exhaust and induction kit.
I think engine mods are definitly better than forking out to make you cars appearance different, or in the case of the saxo brigade, all exactly the same.
I'm a performance person rather than an aesthetics one, but like everyone has pretty much said.
EACH TO THEIR OWN! and whatever your view is fine.

Wouldn't mind a fast and furious supra though:D:D:D
