Same switch is used on the Panda so look there as well.

Removing and cleaning the boot handle switch with warm soapy water and an (old) toothbrush improved mine massively on my 169 Panda.
They're exposed to dirt which eventually stops the microswitch making contact.
Now it works nearly every time
I followed this guide in the Panda section - the procedure to remove the handle might be slightly different on the 500
