Re: Dealer making excuses not to hold new 500 for another week for 59 plate

Thanks again scrogg and others. I am not sure what happened there with my computer as I can now access the original thread
Offering to pay tomorrow seems a fair idea.

many thanks again , all
Remember to check your car over before payment. I don't know if payment means you've officially/legally accepted the car but my dealer asked for payment before the 1st and I told him no JIC something happened before I picked it up (scratches etc).

I believe it was moved to 'Lets Talk Fiat' section as it is not just 500 related.

Very good point, what about if the dealer went into administration after you'd paid but before the car was registered - nightmare

Fiat would move the car to another dealership and it would be registered there.

One of my branches 'inherited' a few registrations that way when a nearby dealership went under late last year.

Yeah that too! Never buy gift vouchers for people now either, its all too dodgy.
Well good luck whatever gets decided :)

Sorry to disagree with the main view in responses, but HUMPTYBOB says in his first thread that the 10 weeks / 24 August was the delivery date agreed in the order when placed.

So, sadly I do not think that HUMPTYBOB has the right to insist on the delay in delivery by one week. The agreed delivery date would be part of the contract, and this is a two-way thing, the dealer is obliged to provide the car at the agreed date and price, and the customer is obliged to receive and pay accordingly.

That said, most reasonable Dealers should be receptive to the one week delay in the interest of good customer service etc. if a polite request is made by the customer. A good Dealer should really have pointed this out and suggested the extra week at the time of order.

But there could be other factors, such as if HUMPTYBOB pressed for an earlier delivery if at all possible when placing the order, or if the car was offered with extra discount for taking in August rather than September...
The agreed date of 24th August was always an estimation and the dealer was at pains to point this out. He said it might come sooner or it might be a bit later. That was a point I made on the phone today - they could easily have phoned me up and said "sorry Humptybob , your car won't be ready for another week" and I would have had to suck it up.

No discounts at all

I am new to this, thanks for the explanation!

I don't know, he hasn't actually said which dealer it is, and his profile doesn't show where he lives.
I am happy to say which dealer if that is acceptable on the forum. I have no ill feeling towards them , just a little concerned that they seemed to be flannelling me a bit on the phone today when I made the request.

so definitely safe to pay up front in August? I would have no objection to this in principle

Probabaly best not to 'name and shame' especially as they are now blatantly lying to you about the scrappage money being allocated to this month.

As long as you get an invoice that clearly shows the full 17-digit VIN, and a receipt to show you have paid the balance due, then yes, it is perfectly safe, as this shows you own the car even if it is not yet registered.

That way, in the highly unlikely event that the dealership goes into Administration over the Bank Holiday Weekend the administrators cannot claim the car is an unsold asset of the dealership and refuse to let Fiat move it to another dealership to be registered.

(Don't you just hate scaremongers that put unreasonable doubt into people's minds? )

I am bowled over at this and all the other helpful advice here . Thanks so much. I will let you know what the dealer says tomorrow

Could you not use a typical dealer tack of going AWOL for a week, and if they phone you get your other half to say, he's busy at the moment I'll get him to phone you back. Always works a treat for dealers trying to avoid us:p

I've already suggested that as a back-up plan...

The dealer cannot register the car without insurance, so if humptybob goes AWOL for a week and don't get his insurance until next Tuesday it will be too late to register the car on an 09.

I didn't need insurance when I picked up my 06 Grande... Have they changed the law?.

Drove it away on the free 5 day cover which was arranged the same day I picked it up...
THat is the insurance. As long as the car is insured for you to drive it at that moment the dealership have legally done their bit.
