Dealing with emergency vehicles is always fraught. No matter what you do, you're left feeling it could have been better. A lot of people just stop, which is often the worst thing to do as it stops the emergency vehicle.

But here's a new one on me.
Heading through a narrow spot, enough room for two vehicles to pass, but not much extra space, so slow and careful.
Coming towards me is an old guy in a Corsa, looking a bit afraid of the small gap.
Behind him, approaching quickly, an ambulance, lights and noise.
My thoughts, I keep going, nothing behind me, so ambulance can then overtake Corsa. For one looks like an easy one.
Corsa swerves across to my side of road, head-on!
Bit of firm braking on my part, as we stop facing each other. I measured the braking to ensure I got close to him, so he would have to reverse away. He looked pleased with himself.
(I'm guessing he thought that if we were both on same side of road, ambulance had a clear passage.)
Ambulance goes by with two very surprised crew, struggling not to laugh.
Old boy then reverses away from me, apparently happy with the outcome.

No matter how much experience you get on the road, there will always be someone trying a new way to catch you out, so be alert out there.
"They are all out to get you, and they're quite good at it!"

Yesterday, I'm tripping along a minor A-road, wishing that the truck ahead was not there, keeping well back as it was throwing lots of dirty spray off the wet filthy roads. Then a Vivaro van just had to pop out between us. I had to slow a little, so now I had two slow vehicles ahead, but at least the van was kicking up less spray than the truck. But van was going slower than the truck, so more irritating. Why did he have to get ahead of me? It is the effect the AA school car has. Behind me, nothing.

Then a deer popped out of the hedge. Van braked, swerved, missed the deer, but hit the verge with his left front wheel, bent the suspension. Thank you for protecting me from stray deer, very kind of you, much appreciated.

I came the closest I've been to a major crash today. The car in front of me crashed into three other cars and flipped over. I just managed to stop in time and then worry that I was going to get rear ended.

Luckily everyone behind must have been keeping stopping distances or something.

I was amazed no one was killed, the Honda in front of me was destroyed and the guy got out with a cut hand!

Stay safe and remember stopping distances!

What kind of road was this on?

I didn't realise that the areas of motorways which are "variable speed limit areas" have the speed cameras turned on all the time. I thought, rather naively, that the cameras would only turn on when the variable speed limit was in operation.

I had cruise control set to 70mph and saw the cameras going off and no one seemed to be driving that quickly either so they must be set to not much above!

I've seen this on the M5 and M1.

Sat at a set of temporary traffic signals this morning. Had left a large gap ahead, as it is a fast road, and I was last car in the queue. Gives room to move forward or escape if next vehicle fails to stop.
Just before the lights changed, a Vivaro van approached from behind, rather more quickly than was comfortable. Despite my flashing of brake lights and then hazards, still no reaction, so I was ready with clutch on the bite and a spot on the verge planned. Then, he braked, very firmly. Seemed to be the normal way he drove, as no apparent surprise involved. He stopped behind me, but very close. Followed immediately by a little jump. Hit from behind, by the following vehicle that he took by surprise.

I wonder if he might ever consider that it was his fault?

I continued to my appointment, four drivers for 1.5 hours each, 3 of which approached junctions fast and braked late. They don't do that any more.

Was it loitering around at a dealer for ages then?

no came of a boat that caught fire on its way to Japan, fire wasn't on the car deck. it was sold as marine salvage by the insurance company, by the time it was all sorted out it was 2005, there were loads of puntos and alfas all less than half price, brand spanking new and jap spec no warranty but never needed one. loads of people missed out because they thought it to good to be true.

Fair enough! That's a lovely example though, must be said. Apart from the alloys, it's like my parents old ELX, sadly scrapped now. That metallic orange is such an absolutely fantastic colour!
