alex:soon as they allow civilians to ride along, i'll offer you a seat, i must admit it certainly was an eye opener when i did it a few years ago..

negotiator: not to put you off, it is pretty hard going, specially at the start, lot of hours all over the place, studying (tons of exams!!!!), paperwork like a bad kafkadream, and days when the apparently dead bloke your're leaning over to check really is dead slowly opens his eyes and breathes out a low moan     (turns out he was dead, but the body was going through some chemical post death changes...)
BUT...its well worth it, when you get to rescue a granny......ahhhhh

I am a civilian, and have been a passenger in an unmarked Volvo T5 on blues and twos on a motorway somewhere - I won't mention times and locations, just in case ;) - abuse of your power, oh yes :D

Hard going but I bet you enjoy it day in day out? I am studying one of the hardest degrees you can do with the highest hour/week you can basically get for a career I don't remotely think I want to do....! What are the exams like?

People like Helz advise me to get my degree then consider it but I just wish I could now.

You were under arrest weren't you, be honest you were caught testing that re-map of the Ulysse.

You could do your degree and I think they have a accelerated promotion scheme for graduates.

But I bet they wouldn't let me have a stick and spray stuff? ;) (yes I know it's a baton and CS gas for anybody who fails to laugh) I wouldn't want to be a dectective type person for a long time. I would want to go into traffic too, or does it not work like that?

for the met, for example, 18 weeks at hendon, although the course has changed slightly since i did it its roughly the same i beleive, 15 end of week tests, 10 practicle tests, 8 written papers, and a first aid course, plus various PT tests. then 2 years probation, during which 6 more training weeks and exams, and then you are confirmed in your role.

then the fun starts, you can look at other roles beyond constable, postings long and short term, etc all sorts

Skip all that and watch a couple of series of "The Bill", just like the real thing isn't it turboned :).

okaaayy...

Anyway, I always appreciate the job the police do and it is of course important to get to places as quickly as possible sometimes. But it's got to be a balancing act right, I mean you can't just go everywhere top speed as in some situations it's dangerous to do so. Accidents do happen and no matter what is going on elsewhere where they are headed it's not important enough to cause another accident.

What do you mean okayyy? I can't possibly see myself as a chemical engineer so I am being a bit stupid although can you see yourself as a comp sci worker?

I think we're all agreeing now, speed for police has a place, I very much doubt turboned uses speed irresponsibility on the way to the scene of a crime.

Unless of course he has run out of doughnuts :).

there was police in our town on an emergency call, lights an siren, on a very visable dual carige road in day light, they jumped a red light and crashed in to a woman no one killed or nothing. the police driver got procecuted for dangerous driving.
then a guy i used to hang around with when i was a teenager joint the traffic police, was attending a broken down car on the A12 in the dark had the yellow coat on white hat an was carrying a blue flashing light walking away from car to put up a warning sign, his police car had its blue lights on. but some ass still ran him over a killed him and they did not get charged with nothing,

I think all police cars should be pimped out and have exhausts with flames :)

Seriously though, they need to make joining the police look a bit cooler, to the younger folk....

I am all for police speeding anywhere they want, when ever they can if it helps people.

Indeed I can, I wouldn't be doing the course otherwise would I!

If I wanted a degree for a degree's sake I'd do something easy like psycology (sorry in advance).
