My cars back in today, they are going to look into the fault with the speedo and have said if they can get the car to replicate the problems I have had with the gearbox then they will try and get me a recon one.

What's wrong with your gearbox?

Right, got the car back, they have said it needs new instrument panel to cure the speedo problem and that it needs a new gear box. The problem with the gear box is it occasioanlly crunches into fourth, and no its not driver error, you can have the clutch completely pressed and it still does it. Also, sometimes 5th gear just isnt there, when you goto select it its like your going for a gear that doesnt exist.

1)troble starting (booked on the 20th to fiat pdh for a cople of days:yum:)
2)on sum roads if i turn the radio off there is a bit of dash rattle noise

Thats it rely (y)

Hi All!

Just recently joined the GP club :) I’ve had my punto grande for around 4 months now and I have had the following issues: :bang:

Grinding brakes – dealer says the bloody pads are fine

Hard knocking on the front when going over bumps - dealer resolved this by replacing the steering rack. (Since this got done, I’m experiencing loads of other problems with the steering, these include steering delay and I’ve noticed the steering gets very heavy on normal and city drive)

Very annoying dashboard and side creaks, out of line too – dealer said it would be very difficult to fix that

Just recently i have noticed that the car has gone very bouncy too, incredibly annoying... Noticeable when going over small bumps or driving on the high way - dealer checked all suspensions and can’t find anything...

Has anybody had any similar issues that could point me in the right direction in solving the suspension/steering issues?

Thanks!

Hi Madman,

You will find my entry on page 13 in which I describe my experiences with stiff, springy steering and knocking noises. City mode is disabled above 18(?) mph so above that you are in the normal mode.

Grande punto jtd 90 bhp I have this model and yes it is terrible to drive how this engine won an award i will never know . They should remove the accelerator pedal and put an on off switch in its place it really is that bad.

Sorry, I disagree. The turbo lag takes a bit of getting used to but this engine has phenomenal torque for a 1.3 litre (diesel). With 6 gears there is always one which allows the engine to wind up from 1750rpm where the torque is highest - making this very useable for overtaking. The engine turns at little more than 2000rpm at 70mph and is virtually inaudible above 30mph. My 1.3 MJ 90 has done 15000 miles since March and the car has regularly returned 58mpg. And the service interval is 18000 miles. What more could you ask from an engine?

I seriously think you're trying to kid yourselves about this version of the 1.3 MJet guys.....it's an absolute 'turkey' which is why Fiat stopped producing it. To say it returns 58mpg regularly is ludicrous and when pushed it's rough...

PS The award was won by the 75bhp standard version with 5 speed transmission!

as far as i was aware the 6 speed gearbox was no longer produced. I wont comment on the rest as I feel my car is a special case.

My GP 90 has well over 20K on it now and as i have said may times the engine is quite remarkable it is only the biblical turbo lag that lets it down but with the six speed box it is possible to keep it in the sweet spot but it can be tiring to do so.

I think the whole problem with the MJ 90 is that it was marketed more on it's economy rather than performance and as said before many times it comes nowhere near to the claimed economy figures ( i average mid 40's but that is mostly city work but can see high 50's on the open road)

I must admit i often wish that the rest of the car was as well put together as the engine :(

20K:eek: you clocked that up quickly...I remember you saying you had problems with it at the start...still got them?

just short of 24K actually,

apart and from the recent seering problem (that was sorted out thanks to a flat battery and a new set of front tyres ) The noisy aircon compresor and a knocking that has just started from the NSR suspension it has been fine since it's last service, still a bit dissapointed with the fuel economy though.

I had a bit of a bad time with it at the start as it only managing 4 miles from from the dealers before it broke there were one or two other issues as well
most of which are probably well known

Rear door handles
New head unit after the other randomly kept loosing its memory
Poor range on remote locking (new antena fixed it)
Steering rack replaced
New heater blower motor
Sqeeky brakes
Paint scratches way too easily
Windscreen wiper snapped off on the move

Hardly drive the car at all now my wife :worship: uses it all the time so i just have to amuse myself with the other cars :D

My journey to work is 35 miles each way on A-roads and motorways. I normally cruise at 60mph but traffic often reduces this to 45. I am not a liar! The secret of achieving such high figures is keeping in the highest gear possible when driving on the flat or downhill. It is possible to chug along at 1200rpm quite smoothly, changing down for uphill gradients to increase the revs to 1750rpm!

I don't always drive like this. One of my previous Puntos was the Mk I GT turbo (petrol) which had similar torque but 136BHP. This one is not quite so much fun, but it is no slouch. I believe the car is still available with the variable geometry turbo (90BHP) in other countries.

Hi thanks for the invitation to courtesy myself in the newbie section if i wanted to make friends i would have joined a social networking site I thought this was a forum where we talked about our opinion of fiat cars well my opinion is you ignore major faults with a car at your peril plenty of car makers are long gone with that attitude.
