2010 Grande Punto 1.4 petrol,
waterleak, could this be a simple leaking hose or is it the housing gasket, or could it be something else, has anyone had the same issue

Hi

Give it a good clean..

Then dry it.. and put kitchen towel across it

You should see where gets damp 1st

Tricky to see from the pic.. that could be red sealant smeared around.. or red coolant

Do you know if that has been apart?

Mine did the same after replacing the thermostat housing because the upper water hose does not seal properly even with two hose clamps. It probably would have needed silicone sealant or o-ring on it to seal it completely. If it does not make a good seal, the upper hose should be replaced. Other possibility is partially blocked radiator or there's a small cut on the hose due to removing it. It was really glued on it.

Problem fixed it was a crack in one of the pipes off the housing,2 metal the one at back is plastic, the new housing is all metal pipes

I had this in my 1.4 tjet. Well there actually wasn't a visible leak, but I had a pressure tester kit and just decide to test it and whennindid I was getting a very slow drip. So I replaced the hose and thermostat and used a jubilee clip instead of the horrible fiat oem ones. But having read what someone put above, I can't remember if I ever tested my kit on it after I done the work, but either way no leaks are showing / drop in antifreeze.

That looks like the warning sign that the thermostat is on its way out, it is quite common on the FIRE engines. The hose starts to sweat around where it joins the thermostat housing resulting in the red anti freeze residue in your picture. On the 1.2 the housing pipe that the hose sits on is plastic which goes brittle over time, I would imagine the 1.4 is the same. The residue is the warning sign to change it now but if it is left unattended eventually the plastic pipe on the housing will collapse resulting in coolant being dumped everywhere & if not switched off straight away can cause head gasket problem or worse case scenario cylinder head problems. The part itself is cheap & not to differcult to change as the Punto engine bay is quite roomy. The thermostat & housing come as one unit & then once it is changed you need to bleed the cooling system.

Here are clear picture of the of the thermostat of a 1.2 which will be simular as it is the same engine

This is the plastic pipe that goes brittle resulting in anti freeze residue then will eventually collapse

This is where you bleed the cooling system once the part has been changed.

Hope this helps :D

Yes that is what happened, the original was a plastic pipe that rotted, new one is now metal £33 from euro parts
