The best thing to do would be to see if you can establish what fault code it is registering. If you know somebody with a reader that would help or purchase a basic one. If you're not confident doing that I would suggest a garage. Without that information there are a multitude of different reasons. It may be something simple though!

Hi Steve and welcome on board !

it may be my bad English understanding, but I can't get you 100% …

- Do you mean the EML came straight ON when the engine stopped AND then has no lit since ?
- What happens on the dash when you try to crank the engine ?
- Any noise that you can hear ?
- Any other info that could be usefull ?

BRs, Bernie

The EML has stayed on its turning over as normal no different noises but not firing at at all

How old is the car how many miles and was there anything that preceded the sudden stop such as the engine making a lot of noise or rattling from the engine over the last few months?

Has the car been serviced recently and is it serviced regularly using the correct 0w-30 oil these engines need.

Some on here will probably see what I’m getting at but it’s possible given your description, that the cam chain has either broken or the cam chain tensioner has broken causing the chain to jump.

The fact that it turns over with the key is suggestive that everything at the bottom of the engine is ok but if the timing chain has gone then the top of the engine is no longer connected.

IV pulled the chain cover off not snapped tensioner still perfect it had a chain kit put on 3 months ago

MES it first, then we can talk …

MES can tell you a lot of things, first of all if the ECU is still working.
Then i assume you can check the fuel pressure...so that will tell you if the pumps are working (i think there's a low pressure pump in the tank, and then the high pressure fuel pump on the engine).

You can also use MES to tell if the RPM sensor is working ( car won't run if it thinks the engine is at 0 rpm).

It has slipped the timing . Can anyone tell me how to find the engine type code because I want to buy another engine

Shouldn't need a whole new engine.

Even if valves have met pistons, these engines are rather clever in having sacrificial rockers that break saving the valves from damage, put the timing right preferably with a new chain and tentioner kit which isn't very expensive, and replace any broken rockers which are inexpensive, and you're good to go.

A replacement engine is likely to cost £500 - £1000; when factoring in labour costs, new clutch (which you'd e stupid not to do while the engine is out) and any parts that get damaged or need replacement, such as clips, nuts and bolts finally a full service of the new engine, assuming you don't know when it was last serviced. All this makes it most likely uneconomical to repair

Where as...
Complete set of rockers £120 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-1-3...625325?hash=item1a36bed36d:g:jwgAAOSwK89Z04bX

Complete timing chain and cam locking tools £85 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALFA-ROM...323709&hash=item46651765a8:g:m6oAAOSwHjNV9CGV

Cost of labour far less than an all out engine replacement, the car keeps the right engine and you know all the history.
