Hi,

The LCD panel on my dash has slowly started to fail. It would get random characters appearing, then would be fine for a bit. Now it has fully gone.
FIAT want to charge me £500 to replace this. My local dealers don't want to touch this with a barge pole. I need to get it sorted soon as I believe this will fail it's MOT due to not being able to see total mileage

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Rubbish, don't listen to Fiat! Mine went exactly the same a couple of weeks ago. It turned out to just be just the LCD screen that had gone kaput! I bought a second hand entire cluster instrument off eBay for £29, swapped the screen from that and wallaaaa, it was working.
Easy 2-5minutes job.
Any advice please ask.

Cheers
Dan

Dan8488,
I am having the exact same problem.

You mentioned you just replaced the LCD screen? Does it need to be from exactly the same model? This is what I have been told, otherwise, apparently it will not work.

Hi,

No it doesn't need to be the same part number, it just needs to be the same type/size of cluster and screen. I bought the whole instrument off eBay for about £20/30 (forgot exact figure now) which was from a 1.9MJ Diesel which had done 100k+ miles. My car is only a 1.4 and only done 20k. Don't listen to those bullsh**ers. Just buy the same type of cluster and swap the LCD screen itself. See photo.
Any more info/how to's, I am more than happy to advise.

Cheers Dan

I have a Ford Scorpio which had a radio display with exactly the same problem.

The Ford Scorpio board did some research, and found that LCD displays don't like being in damp conditions - they have wires very close together and a little dampness in the air, it it gets onto the insulation, will cause occasional shorts, and the characters will jumble, and eventually not display.

The Scorpio people found that taking their radio displays and putting them in a warm airing cupboard for a couple of days restored them to working.

If you have this problem in the winter months, if you leave your car outside ungaraged, and if the weather is very wet, then I suspect this problem. The Scorpio people found that even putting a bit of heat in the car, like running with the heater full on and the windows slightly open a few times was often enough to bring the display back...

Dan, that is excellent news, so thanks very much for the feedback. I think I will be giving that a go. Got to worth a shot!

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the information. Even I am also having same issue which 'oggmonster' is having. My display is completely blank with only backlight working. I am from India and I inquired Fiat Service station and they quoted me 13500 (Indian Rupees) approx 170 (British Pound). Is there an option through which I can purchase whole instrument and get shipping in India? Can you share me the link from where you purchased?
Can you share me steps to remove whole instrument?

Thanks
Kiran

Hey Kiran, were you able to sort this out ??

I believe technically it does need to work but they've no real way of testing it.

Well tintbit of a gray area I've attached the exact terms regarding a lot test for the Speedo

It does not have to work but will fail if clearly defective e.g if it said 20mph when parked

If you do replace your clocks you will need to have them proxy aligned otherwise the mileage will keep flashing, also buy clocks with lower mileage than yours is on, you can put the mileage up but you can't lower the mileage on the clocks.

I believe the mileage stuff is located in the ECU, but maybe I'm wrong ?

BRs, Bernie

But it doesn't update the clock when they are plugged in, the mileage that was on the clocks when removed from the old car will remain and will flash until either a proxy alignment or you change the mileage shown, mileage can only be increased on the clocks and no decreased.

Hi there - I have the exact same problem and would like top try and replace that screen as you did. Could you give any guidance as to how to access the screen and anything to watch for? I will see if anything on youtube but grateful for any guidance. If the mileage needs to be reset a few miles higher so it doesn't flash - is that easy to do? Any idea how?

Hi I have a 2009 grande punto with blank lcd. Quite happy with getting replacement lcd from old cluster. Is process to access screen relatively simple?
Thanks for any assistance
