X244 cruise control retrofit 2.8JTD 2005-factory parts?

Been told I only need the correct Fiat stalk switch, assuming wiring connectors are in place already, and maybe a clutch pedal switch if not already fitted. I found the stalk, but need to know what else is needed. also how to set up, like does it need programming, (got MES) or any pitfalls, maybe you have done one? Don't want to spend hundreds on an aftermarket item as it will not get used enough. All help welcome!

Given what I've seen on other models if you have the wiring in place it needs to switch's connection up all the options pressed through /selected they needs a proxi alignment carrying out

I think anyway

No, no proxi alignment, as mine is not full canbus. So not able to do it. IIRC it should -theoretically- be a case of plug'n'play, ecu learning as it is used. There is a post on here, and I did have some correspondence with the OP describing how he made one up using little push button switches from Maplins and a bit of PCB and solder. Keep the tips coming folks! TIA

google alfa 147 cruise ducato . Look for camperonline.it, there is a thread 18 pages long and includes wiring diagrams. I followed it and it worked on my 2004 ducato

Re: X244 cruise control retrofit 2.8JTD 2005-factory parts?

Cheers, Ronnie. After some time not pursuing this, I am at this very moment looking at eLearn for cruise description and decided to check back here. I have a part number, and found the stalk, also some settings available in MES to fiddle with too.I might go and have a look if the connectors are in place, do not need clutch switch apparently. Off now to check the link you sent, hope it is not all in Italian, only know enough to get fed and watered/out of jail, lol!

Re: X244 cruise control retrofit 2.8JTD 2005-factory parts?

Tools required:
T25 Torx
Phillip's screwdriver
10mm & 13mm for engine battery ( on mine it was)
Long nose pliers
Terminal removal tool
Soldering iron, heatshrink, connectors
Alfa Romeo 147 cruise control stalk p/n 735365520
4 pin brake switch
Obd cable & multiscan ecu (free version should be ok I believe, i had the paid version)
This is based on my experience on a 2004 Fiat ducato chassis- lhd
My vehicle was already wired meaning that the cable connections from the ECU to the brake switch, black connector, dash light were already there.
As always, this is entirely at your own risk. I would urge to double and triple check wiring diagrams before embarking on this.
Cost... a couple of hours of your time, and maybe less than 30 depending on the cost of the stalk.
1. Disconnect battery
2. Remove cowling under steering wheel
3. Remove cover for fuse box on driver side
4. Find black connector near fuse box. One side of it is already terminated with pink, red, yellow/black, white/purple, thick red & black/blue cables . These come from the ECU
5. On the alfa cruise control stalk, use terminal removal tool and extract the cables and pins.
6. Cut stalk cables, ensure to leave enough to allow you to extend the cables to the fuse box area
7. Using the wiring diagram, connect 4 if the extended stalk cables to the black connector found at the fuse box. This can be tricky due to space. I used the long nose pliers to pull the terminal through.
8. Remove existing 2 pin brake switch and use 4 pin brake switch
9. Link yellow alfa stalk cable with terminal 3 & 4 at brake switch. Alternatively, there is a connector at the passenger side. Remove the section above the glove box. Yellow cable can be connected here and also link 2 pins though cant remember pin numbers for this. The Italian link will tell you.
10. All connections made? Double check and reconnect battery.
11. Looking at where the indicator is mounted, there is a part that the alfa stalk can screw into. You will need to cut a recess in the lower cowling in order to refit it.
12. You may or may not need to do this part. I had the equipment hence doing it: Connect obd cable and start multi scan ECU. Select vehicle and connect. Once connected, select "parameters"
I used this programme to check brake switch and cruise control buttons worked correctly.
13. If all was ok, road test the vehicle.
On the Italian forum, some members said it took a few key turns before the cruise dash light came on
I think others did not need to use an obd cable to activate it.
If the vehicle is not pre-wired, it is still possible to do the retrofit. Connection needs to be made from the ECU.

Re: X244 cruise control retrofit 2.8JTD 2005-factory parts?

I looked at the italian website via google chrome with the translate extension.
Bit gibberish at times, but got there in the end. Use the wiring diagrams on the thread and you should be ok.

Re: X244 cruise control retrofit 2.8JTD 2005-factory parts?

Ronnie,, very comprehensive info and thanx for the linx. I had a quick look into the are after taking the lower column cover off, expecting a connector there- hardly surprising in view of what you put above, there was none. Found correct stalk on ebay, someone beat me to it, but more out there. I have paid MES somewhere on a laptop and have seen summat relating to cruise, so doable if needed. May be some time before I have a go, its a pig getting in a position to even remove the lower shroud screws, as room is tight and getting a driver blade on the screw heads blind is bloomin' frustration itself. Best bet is to lie on floor, with stuff digging in me ribs, and once down there getting back up is hard for me, seat and steering wheel removal would help, but what a chore! Its not a standard cab, but an A class so maybe mot as much room to wiggle under. I'll post back if/when I have had another go- in the meantime other questions will prob'ly pop up, so if its ok I will ask on here, and thanks very much for the help, sir! Cheers.

Re: X244 cruise control retrofit 2.8JTD 2005-factory parts?

BTW,, mine is RHD,so in that case will I still be looking in the drivers side fuse box for the black connector, or the left (nearside) fusebox for our friend the black connector? In the eLearn diag from your link, M010 is the ECU, in which case is DO04 or B002 is said black connector ?Looking at eLearn component location now, BTW. H007 not listed in component list below! But looks the more likely suspect. IO30 is the brake switch isn't it? One pair of contacts normally closed (for cruise) and one pair normally open for brake lights. Do I need a clutch switch too? Can't see one on the diag. Off to check the forum linx now and translate if I can...... 'mille grazie!'
(bet I even got that wrong!!) In which case, scenario 2......

D097 is the black connector for the stalk, or (D001, or D018), M010 is ECU, B002 is fusebox ('junction unit under dash' hardly describes a fusebox IMHO), its like stripping a million layer onion at times on eLearn! If the black connector is not fitted, presume as you say, need then to connect from ECU to stalk switch in which case I won't bother.... to much like hard work due to bad access under bonnet!

Thanx mate.

Re: X244 cruise control retrofit 2.8JTD 2005-factory parts?

GlenR....I never changed my indicator stalk. The cruise control stalk was a separate item.

Ocwobio....I fitted mine on an A class Hymer, LHD.

A couple of quick checks would be to look at the fusebox on the passenger side(rhd) you are looking to see if fuse F27 is populated. Try looking to the side of this fusebox also for the black connector. On mine it was between this fusebox and the OBD port

You can always look in the engine bay. Remove the plug from the ECU, there are pins23, 53,54,55,56 & 57... look to see if they are populated. I think they go to the fusebox in the engine bay, and then from there to the cabin.

Maybe also look at the brake switch, there should be 4 cables to it.

Ronniemc do you have a part number for the brake switch. I bought one but it seems far too long.

Re: X244 cruise control retrofit 2.8JTD 2005-factory parts?

Hmm, my OBD port is on the drivers side fusebox- no problem to check both I suppose, as I'm going looking for a spare 12v ignition controlled connection for a USB socket anyway.
Maybe have a look later today, or tomorrow and will post back. Cheers!
