The other day I wanted to change the oil and filter since the van has been sitting for so long. I contacted Fiat to order the filter and was told that I'd be lucky to buy one off the shelf because they were so hard to get, but the bloke told me he could order one in for me and have it there within a week.
I naturally asked the cost, in view of what he'd said about not being able to walk in and buy it off the shelf.
Price to me was $78.00 plus freight to where I lived which he quoted at about $30.00 with packaging and handling.
This morning I was at our local rural parts supplier to buy a brass "T" piece to replace the plastic "Y" part for the EGR cooling (Fiat $88.00 + postage; brass part $3.50 in stock), and asked he might have an oil filter to fit my Fiat.
After checking the book, it turns out he did have a few in stock. This one has exactly the same specs and is a popular industrial brand that is used on a variety of very expensive farming equipment.
He told me that these things aren't cheap because they are good quality but he could get me something else if I'd rather not pay top price.
I told him I was desperate and wanted it for the weekend so I was happy to pay whatever I had to. He asked me for $23.00 and apologised because he couldn't offer a discount.
Go figure. Now I can finish my service on the van.
By the way, a bottom radiator hose from Fiat is $80.00 plus. I'll do some research on that one before I part with any money.

im using fleetgard in my 2.3 $12 inc gst gave away genuine filters years ago, I also switched to Cat coolant ,Ford spec automatic transmission fluid in the power steering along with Ford Falcon BA power steering fluid in the transmission,if you can access wurth australia H7 headlight bulbs are around $8.50 each ,natrad can supply radiators and intercoolers at about 1/4 the price of genuine parts (made in the same factory same box) cooling fans i get modified for $75 each ,complete driveshafts ,ball joints ,wiper blades and tie rod ends are available from supercheap at a fraction of the price,RYCO make filters to suit as well if youve got the canister fuel filter the Holden Calibra diesel is the same ,conectors for sensors ,most of the sensors even the fuel pump that sits in the tank is again available at supercheap along with grills bumpers towbars taillight assemblies ive had my ducato 5 years this feb ive done alot of research and testing the biggest problem ive encounted is lack of education out there in Australia .Heres a big tip when dealing with wreckers with the X250 Chassis to know about compatibility ask if it has red or orange seats that was the change over have fun Cheers Adam

Hey Adam. Thanks for the information. With your info, I will have an easier job finding what I need because there are very few suppliers who are willing to help. Out in Dirranbandi, we don't have too many options so doing business online is our only hope.
Many thanks again,
Errol.

no problem mate im in Goondiwindi we are nearly neighbours Cheers Adam

btw which Fiat dealer are you using?

The Chrysler/Fiat mob in Toowoomba in Neil Street.

The world is way too small.

If you ever need a cuppa and you're coming through Dirran, pop in anytime. I have a shop just n the right as you come in from St George. Always have 3 flags out the front and you can't miss it.

I owned a new Chrysler 300C and trying to get a standard service done was almost impossible, so I then travelled to Kippa-Ring and they were no better so I sold the car after less than 2 years old and went back to Mercedes.
I have phoned the Toowoomba mob a few times for parts for the Fiat and honestly it is a nightmare. So the Fiat side of their business is just as poor as the Chrysler side.

As soon as I mention I have a Fiat Ducato, it's like I have some horrible disease...something to think about I suppose.

PS:
I just figured out the emoticon stuff. I amaze myself sometimes.

I paid :£1.79 each for my oil filters for my 1.9 TD here in the UK, I never go to fiat dealers as there prices are 200% extra

Prices look outrageous, even in rip off Ireland we only pay about €10/€12 for oil filter. I m not aware of any manufacturer making their own filters, there are plenty of excellent filter companies that have been around for years all you need to do is cross reference the numbers. Crossland. Coopers, Parflux etc etc.

Its always worth looking inside a cheap filter, even an expensive one for that matter as there are a ton of mahle, kecht, mann etc fake filters about.

Outside will look fine, look inside the tooling will be rough and there will be a fraction of the filter paper. Two stage filters can be single stage and I've seen one that had no bypass valve.

You make a good point there and that's why I kept looking around. I found a good brand at our local mob, Ag Spares, and I was okay with the price given the cost of getting anything to Dirranbandi.

oil filter for a 3l is around from £7

I think I paid about that in equivalent Aussie dollars so that is at least a start for me. Adlarplant has put me onto a couple of contacts that he uses, so things are looking up at my end.
As you said earlier, you have a lot of choice over your way, which we miss out on here.

Could be worse mate you could be at Hebel not looking for a bull bar are you got an ecb bar sitting in my shed? Cheers Adam
That is bloody tempting but I don't have bull bars on any of my other vehicles and my wife won't drive the Fiat when she heads to the Gold Coast to see her grandson. She's a bit of a luxury girl.
If I get cashed up a bit more, I just may talk to you about that.
As for Hebel, I know what you mean and have you had a gander at Ralph's bus? He's in the process of doing it up as a motorhome.

Shes spoilt mate ive got a fairlane with all the fruit and id still rather drive the van i havent been out to hebel for just over a year one of the best feeds on the road at the store
