OK guys so AVG Free is no longer with us from 31st May 2008.

In response to AVG's request for £40 a year for their new v8 software I decided to drop AVG and installed Avast!.
I read some really good reviews on Avast! before going ahead with the change over, compared to all the well know Antivirus stuff by Norton etc Avast! looks OK to a PC numpty like me.

Anyone on here any genuine concerns with Avast! ?

haha

whats avast like? i may test

Bit early to say yet, but it seems more user friendly than AVG in that it can be Customised for different levels and applications. Have a look. It did find a couple of things that AVG had missed.

ill try on my "other comp" (the torrent one:p) as i havent upgraded to AVG 8 yet.

does it have regular updates? take long to download?

Yes the reviews I saw said it updates regularly. I have to see that for myself yet, if the updates are visible. Took about 20 mins from start to end for me.

You have to get a licence number from the providers and re-do that every year, that comes via e-mail. But it tsarts to work straight away on a free 60 day licence.

Its great, updates alot via the day. Ive been using it quite a bit recently. a pop up comes up and tells you in an american voice that the virus database has been updated.
I recommend.

You may be pleased to know that I downloaded AVG Version 8.0 yesterday and today for free - unless you know that this is possible already. Do a Google search for AVG free and you will find the website.

Everything worked fine except for the scanner. The scanner experienced an irrecoverable error with the usual message "Tell Microsoft about this problem?". I tried rebooting, deleting AVG 8.0 and downloading again, rebooting twice and it failed a further three times in the same way. Then I had the idea of looking at the file at which it had stopped scanning. Yes, you have guessed it - it was the Blue and Me zipped file I had downloaded a few months ago (but not used) for the text message reader! I deleted the file and directory and the scanner subsequently ran through to the end of the test! Brilliant!

Has anyone heard of such a thing happening before?
