Anyone ever done one?

Im thinking of getting a 1242cc, rebuilding most if not all of it, then slapping it in my Sporting?

I understand It would be a very involved job, not that arsed about that...I would start ASAP then install it around July!

Any idea on costs? and time needed?
Looking at the Haynes Bible, It doesnt look that* complicated, providing its done methodically.

Plus! Any idea If I could put larger diameter valves in to deliver more fuel \ air? I'd be porting and polishing the head at the\ same time, it looks as if thats the most work!

Mine isn't fitted yet but we found that pistons were difficult to obtain and therefore expensive. We left the valve sizes standard, but hacked a fair amount out of the ports and fitted a bumpy camshaft. We also skimmed the flywheel. I got mine done by a friend who runs an engineering shop so I don't know what the costs would be, but I think 'not cheap' would be the answer.

Well, I wasnt really planning a full rebuild as in new pistons...I was just thinking rennew head stuff, piston rings and and such like...I could probably get the flywheel skimmed on the cheap somehow!

GrpN Catback Exhaust system is here...just need to get the bleeder on now!!

Right. Engine is arranged, insurance isnt as silly as my current one wanted it to be.

The "New" Engine is a 1242cc 8v SPi, done 55K.

As for the strip, I will be definately doing the following...

Head Job (ooer), Clutch
Degunk internal and External
Are Piston rings an easy job??

Is it worth going on a port and polish at the same time? Logic seems good to me. Also, GSR do Double Valve springs and a generaly lighter valvetrain. I cant afford this, but would like to:D

Its not a race engine, but Id like to have fast acceleration, and I am willing to sacrific top-end to an extent!

Before deciding to do rings, there is no point in doing them unless you are going to hone the block first and if there are no scores on the bores and the pistons aren't wobbling about I would be tempted to leave alone. Once you've got the head and sump off, you could, if you are very careful, put something over the block face and remove a cap and see how tight the pistons are. In my new engine, which came from a former member of Clubcento with a known history, the pistons just about fell out when the caps were removed. Hence the rebore.

Isnt the crank bolted into the sump?

I would probably hone it if needs be. Most of the hone tools Ive found are drill driven, so it cant be rocket science...unless Im being very naive:)

The crank is bolted into the bottom of the block. The sump is just a tim cover to stop the oil dripping out. The crank runs in shell bearings one half of which is fitted into the block, the other half in the cap. The big ends of the connecting rods are similarly located. The being careful bit is all about being able to reuse the bearings should everything else check out OK. If you are heavy handed removing the cap or rod, you could upset the bearing and then need to buy a new set, they aren't sold individually.
Honing can be a drill based process. Good practice is to hone when new rings are fitted.

The GSR springs and lightening that you speak of are a very good idea if you want a serious engine! They will allow the car to rev to well over 8 grand....*dribble* couple this to a Punto 6 speed box and you wil have mega acceleratioon - which you said you wanted - but it will sacrifice top end tho. I could sort you out with a 6 speed box if you are intrested??

Depends. Im doing this to a ridiculously tight budget!

with a lot of cinq engines getting to that age (or mileage) where they just dont what to go and need replacing i thinks some1 needs to do a sticky on 1.2 conversions.

from the info on the FF the cost of putting in a new"ish" 1.1 in costs pretty much the same as 1.2
so many people seem to have done the converstion with good results, so every one could put some info towards it.

what do you lot think?
A sticky on the popular 1.2 converstion
costs
names of companys
extra parts
tools
possible problems

whos is the little red fiat?

As I said in another post, Id happily do one, but I need to do the Transplant first!!

hmm.

Ive ripped the sump off and checked ti all and it seems schveet. Problem now is the RTV (Instant Gasket) used to seal the joint.

How much do I need to remove? Haynes says it all, but I think that would be very difficult. Also due to the fact that I havent got a stand and the fact that Im having to lie the engine down to do this, some RTV bits are falling into the crankcase. I can forsee a problem.....Im thinking flushing the crankcase with oil may not be a bad idea. Comments?
