Morning,

I have fitted a new fan, which works nicely, but ....

It is very loud - not the end of the world

It appears to be on an awful lot. When driving at motorway speeds you can see the temp still going up and I think the fan is actually coming on when driving at about 75 - 80 mph ???

As the temp keeps climbing, it settles at about 90 degs for a while and then makes 100 then we turn the heater on to reduce the temp.

Is the radiator buggered, hence the temp goes up even on a motorway or is the thermostat / rad switch broken ? The fan is not on all the time, but once it starts it likes to keep going..

Thanks

Del

could be a dodgey thermostat.

but fan on during motorway driving isnt a good sign.
i drove to wales an back on sunday, 133 miles each way and my temp didnt get passed 75, and that was with the weather on sunday as well!!!

are u losing a lot of water as well?

the worse case senaro is that your head gasket is on its way out!!!

I had the same problem with my cinq a couple of weeks ago. Driving down motorway and temp just got higher and higher until in the end the head gasket went. i had that repaired and the thermostat changed but still had the same prob. ended up being the radiator. Your best bet is to look at the rad through the gap in the bumper and see what it looks like. If the fins are flaking away or half missing then u def need a new radiator. There about £65.

Hope this helps

sound advice, u can actually get to the rad without takin the front bumper off, but if u want to change it then it can be a bit of a mission! if the rad has a green tint to it, or is slightly leaking, or has a lot of the splines damaged, time to invest!

have a look around for an alloy one! then tell me where u found it :p

they usually go on ebay for about 40-45 quid! (the standard ones, not alloy)

I got an alloy one off eBay for about £50 and its a genuine Magnetti Marelli one, weighs about half the old one, but to be honest I noticed no diff is cooling effeciency as my old rad was functioning as it should but was rusting at the bottom and looking unsightly, plus the intercooler and oil cooler are silver in finish so thought the rad should be too!

Hi,
before spending any money you check the system is working properly:

Have you checked to see if there's any air in the system, there's a bleed valve for getting air out of the system, by the drivers headlamp on 899cc and behind the airbox on the heater pipe on the 1108cc, with the engine running slacken the screw to see if water or air comes out, if water comes out its ok, careful cos the water may be hot..
You can also flush out the rad with a hose pipe, take off the top and the bottom rad hoses and push the hose pipe in the top rad hole and let the water run out the bottom hole, hopefully taking all crap with it.... :)

Thanks

Thanks,

The car is not losing any water so it maybe the radiator, will have a look on ebay.

The fan is kicking in too early, could be a thermostat problem aswell. The temperature should not continue to rise once the fan has kicked in (ideally!), so I agree with the previous posts...new rad (alloy one :D).
