Off Topic Airbag failure see handbook

What a great forum!!

So inconclusive results today, but some great advise given. Going to sell the wrong SRS module on ebay and hopefully recoup some of the costs going forward.

Watch this space :)

No they don’t, they are plug and play. Sometimes you have to do a proxy alignment.

That's good. To be fair I was not specific about using used instruments, but I have always thought you would get a flashing mileage figure unless it's original or virginised.

Replacement airbag module fitted.

Initially it came up with "Airbag fault see handbook" and "Fuel cutoff unavailable".

Switched off and restarted and the fuel cutoff issue has disappeared.

So so far as I can tell the original fault remains even with the replacement SRS module.

Also the option to disable the passenger air bag still does not appear on the menu.

On advice from Typecastboy I am picking up a replacement speedo tomorrow morning so I will fit that and see what happens.

I also went to see PDH cars in Hassocks yesterday (main dealer for Sussex) for a diagnostic and a chat. They confirmed the findings of Typecastboy, no surprise there.

The faults were passenger and driver satellite sensors and they were unable to perform a PROXI alignment.

They did say that if I could book the car in for a day they would order some parts and work through it.

According to them I would only have to pay for the parts that were needed plus labour, the parts that were not needed would be returned.

So in short I'll fit the replacement speedo and report back, if that does not work it look like a trip to the dealer.

So yesterday morning I set off to collect the replacemet speedo fro Fleet in Hampshire and half way round the M25 my Land Rover Discovery is leaving a trail of smoke and the rear window is misting up from the outside.

I pulled over and discovered that the fuel return hose next to a swaged connection on the head had split and was emptying diesel as fast as the pump could push.

So a trip home with the RAC and after dismantling half the car the hose was replaced. This hose is notorious on TD5 engines as it has a flare nut right next to the head sandwiched between the alternator and you cannot even get to it with a crows foot spanner!.

So 3 hours later and I'm back on the road and collected the speed that evening.

So this morning the new speedo was fitted and three thing changed:

* The airbag warning light in addition to the message on the console
* The yellow warning triangle came on
* The menu option to disable the passenger air bag came back.

I decided to take a closer look at the old speedo and all four screws on the back were missing. The retaining clips were broken, and the warning leds had been smashed off.

So someone clearly new there was an issue and decided to hide the evidence.

Nasty people out there dangerously bodging cars to sell them to the unsuspecting.

Ideal example of "it's an easy fix look I've even got the part I will give It too you"
Timely warning too me , Thank you.

Huge well done fixing the 500 and your td5 correctly.

Thank you for your posts .
Please carry on with your updates .
I am learning a lot from your posts.

Thank you typecastboy too.

Many thanks

Jack

A side thought , your original metal case air bag ecu may end up being ok ,
If you can test it on your car you then have option of selling it as tested known good.
Of course it may not be ok, time will tell.

My guess is the original air ECU was faulty and somebody smashed the led out to hide the fault and print did damage to the Speedo circuit's in the process

The seller had the new owner slip and said they were waiting for a log book in their name.

I now have the details of the previous owner (someone who is a trader) and they said they took it in part exchange and sold it with a known fault.

I now trust neither of them, there are lots of inconsistencies in their story. The seller I bought from said he bought the car four weeks ago but in a screen shot he sent me I now he wanted to view the car on June 18. The trader claimed he sold it three months ago.

My own fault really two rules were broken when my daughter and I viewed the car.

* Never buy a car privately where the seller does not have the complete V5 in their name and at a known address.

* Never buy a car where you are not familiar with the dash board self test for the warning lights. In every car all the warning lights are illuminated at switch on and will extinguish in a few seconds, this is a test of the bulbs. It helps when viewing to have a print out showing where all the lights are and what they are for. There may well be some lights have that have spaces on the dash but don't light, e.g. the glowplug light in a petrol car.

Oh and if you google the seller and they come as having been previously wanted by the police, they may not be the most upright of citizens :)

What a tale.

If your daughter has not yet received the v5c , before spending any more money, consider ringing the police. ask if car has been reported as stolen. It is very unlikely but possibly worth doing.

Best wishes

Thanks again to typecast boy.
Much diagnostics took place and the replacement airbag ecu seemed to have sensible values.

However the two original faults remain regarding the side impact sensors with either ecu.

The proxi alignment fails when writing to airbag ecu with a "value out of range error"

All the ecus can be read OK.

I think the airbag error did at one point give an "eol error"

Looks like someone else has had the out of range error too writing to airbag.

Battery voltage sounds very low on the sensor at 8v
All through perhaps many read that low typecastboy is probably best to ask if here oftens sees voltages that low

Hello again , hope you don't mind be joining in again?
Have a look for the side impact sensors,
Maybe "crimewatch seller boi" removed or unplugged them in his quest to do as dodgy a job as possible?

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

Forgot to say 58 reg panda in scrap yard near me , if you need any parts and typecast confirms they same as 500 , don't hesitate to call out to me I will get them and post them to you if you can PayPal cost (-:

The Mk2 Punto had common airbag faults associated with seat pressure sensors and a connector behind the glove box. Mine turned out to the seat connector A gentle squeeze with pliers and it was sorted.

The Panda does not have the wires to the seat so I don't know how the ECU "knows" when the set is being used. But (because Fiat tend to change as little as possible), it's worth checking the seat occupancy widget.
