Re: Serious Post- Tracing a 500

Looking at that link, the rear registration plate appears to be in plain view of one of the cameras. I suspect the issue now is to identify the driver, not the vehicle.

I'm sure they will find out. May be only insured to one person and there will probably be an ANPR camera somewhere that will have picked up the driver.

Back in 2009 I stopped and help with a 19 year old in Liverpool who was knocked down by a bus (sadly he died in hospital the next day) the police tracked the bus through every single junction across the whole of Liverpool via CCTV to the point of the accident for miles, I suspect they would do the same in this case, they will find every cctv camera in and out of the area to find out where the car had come from or went to and hopefully pick up as many shots of the drivers face as possible

Just watched this again. I hope the people standing around afterwards have seen it and are as disgusted as I am that they did nothing to help him. How he survived that is a miracle.

OH works for the ambulance service and it would appear the natural reaction is to film horrible events rather than help these days.

Then you have the other end where people will ring an ambulance because someone has "passed out" on grass on a sunny day but won't go ask them if they are OK...if they are sunbathing perhaps!

I think it's pretty harsh to criticise those who have been perceived as not helping, firstly you get about 5 seconds of people staggering about not knowing what to do after, secondly: having witnessed them-self a incredibly distressing accident.

And what are they going to do with no training no equipment and no idea?

The best they can do is phone an ambulance, and talk to the guy but then if he's out cold then that's not going to achieve a lot either.

If you weren't there then you can't criticise or say what you would or wouldn't do.

Exactly unless you're competent you can quite often do more damage than good. Contact 999, get a blanket and keep them warm and calm if they're conscious.

Been involved in a pedestrian knock down on a zebra crossing and even with no official first aid training at the time we did the right thing...

first aid isnt rocket science

people get scared of making things worse but if the poor buggers not breathing or got an obstructed airway worrying about a spinal injury Isn't going to save the persons life...

seen people walk and drive past a OAP who had fallen next to a big junction in town me and the mrs were the only ones to stop 5 mintues later a PCSO joined us who was passing then a paramedic who was on her way to work,,,, :(

In this situation your talking about a very nasty and traumatic collision which has made those bystanders as much a victim of the guy who's been knocked down. Fortunately we live in a pretty safe country and the public aren't used to seeing things as horrific as this.

Yes I agree without an airway he's not going to last long, if he has serious head injuries and facial injuries a passer by maybe very ill equipped to deal with that sort of situation.

The worst I've seen (I think I've said before on here) was a 19 year old hit by a bus with massive head injuries with blood and cerebral spinal fluid leaking out of his ears and mouth. And in that situation even the ambulance service officers didn't know what to do, it was very much scoop and run to the nearest trauma hospital.

You can use this sort of thing for an argument as to why more first aid training for the general public is necessary but you can't criticise people for not knowing what to do.

I have to agree with the last comment. On one of the videos you can see the first reaction of one of the witnesses is hand to mouth and start to run the other way. When I was a child I saw a young lad run in to the road, get hit by a car and I know he died. It was horrible and most of us who don't have to deal with this sort of thing recoil from it.
I like to think I would have summoned the courage to phone an ambulance and go and see if he was breathing, but I don't know if I could have done much more. I sure as hell wouldn't have filmed it!
One other thing though - it's a vindication of modern car design that the car scooped him up rather than flattening him against the windscreen / roof. He is still a very lucky man considering the speed and the height he fell from. Wow.
