General A SMART alternative

As I said, there is no smart alternative, to a 500 ;)

The iQ is a big lump with uncomfortable seats, a gear lever too far down, and rear access fit only for Chinese gymnasts. And yes, no boot; nix.

The Smart is almost good, but the lurchy gearbox and the terrible thirst conspire to make it less than the sum of its parts. Easy to get into though.

I agree about the gearbox, but can't moan about the fuel consumption. At least 48mpg all the time around town.

Im very happy with my smarts gearbox, it can lurch but if you drive it properly it will change as good as any autobox... you just have to know how to do it:) As for the fuel consumption, Im averaging 55mpg and I dont hang around either. I varies wildly from 44mpg low to 65mpg high and for no reason either!

Yes, overall the 500 is a better bet for most people, but IMHO the smart has loads more character because of its little foibles and that lovely sounding Mitsi 3 pot engine.
Jenny asked today if I miss my 500 as we saw loads of them today (all BNW though).
I hadnt thought if I had before and to be honest I dont, I miss my old Panda and really am pining for my 126 but no regrets about letting the 500 go.

Citroen C4P has a smart-style gearbox which is described in the Citroen build docs as "Gearbox type: MCC" - not sure if that's a reference to the Smart or not really.
YuP
MCC refers to 'Micro Compact Car' as the original company producing the smart car was called MCC Smart GmbH

We've had our Smart City Coupe Passion since Dec 2001
Also had a Smart Roadster as a company car for just under three years between 2003-06
Often thought that if our City Coupe ever died we would replace it with a 500 ;)

First saw a Smart in Paris in 1998 and knew then I just had to have one of those cars some day

First time I saw a new 500 I thought exactly the same....so one day...;)

You should hear our Smart City Coupe Mk5 Suprex 600cc with Janspeed Stealth exhaust:D

It looks stock; you cannot see the performance exhaust; even has Smart Roadster steel wheels that mean it wears rubber as wide as a Brabus Smart but kinda looks like a base model smart cos of the 'steelies'; SOUNDS GREAT particularly between 4500 & 6000 revs when the turbo really kicks in....:D

I was the same. First saw a Smart "in the flesh" in Paris 1999 whilst on honeymoon. I had to have one, but it wasn't until 2003 I bought one. As soon as I saw the original "spy shots" of the 500, I wanted one, so I consider myself very fortunate to own a Smart and have a 500 on order.
