Assuming I have regular servicing, drive normally, treat it with care etc etc, what milage could I expect from my 500 diesel mulitijet engine gearbox assembly before it sounds like a bucket of nails and becomes unservicable?

Not possible to say, a diesel engine will last a long time normally......dont worry, just enjoy owning it, I'm sure plenty will happen in the coming years to distract you from the impending destruction of your engine....

150-200k???

most diesels will see 200k no problem,,, 100k would be the time to change, so about 6 years driving, and a lifespan of 12 years

mmm, I go for 100k for a gearbox.... 200-300k for the engine (assuming proper oil is used...)

I have the 1,9 m/jet, and am up to 60 now, and everything drives "as new" (y) (I tend to do 50k a year, and get through quite alot of cars! lol..)

am not sure it'll go quite that far, only because you do have to drive the MJ pretty hard to make reasonable progress.

I guess we won't know until engines start grenading etc..

Thanks for all your replies so far. Looks like i can expect a reasonable life span from the 1.3 if treated right. My Merc diesel was at nearly 300k when i sold it and the guy is still driving it around now. looks a bit rusty and i noticed some exhaust smoke but at least it was still moving :)

As mentioned the 1.3 needs to rev higher and is more complex. I would imagine the main structural components should keep going but I'm not so sure about all the hi-tech stuff and the fancy jetting etc.

Cheers

My panda is on 43K no prob but as recommended by honest John of the telegraph it gets an extra oil cx in between services the oil works very hard on turbodiesels i reckon what is likely to kill the car is main dealer repair costs at 6 years on. My guess if you can rack up the mileage 150k plus. Wonder what the highest mjet mileage is? Engine is also in vauxhalls.

i have seen some terrible abuse of fiat diesels and they always soldier on

for example an uno 1.7 td that had the oil light come on after the oil had turned to sludge as it had not been changed in 7 years so removed sump scoped it out refiled and flushed then droped refiled again and it was still fine

a guy broke the alloy sump on his car 1.9 bravo td100 and because we had just serviced it he thought is was something we had done so drove it with the oil light on from kendal to windermere and no oil in the sump because he figured any damage that was incured would be our fault how wrong was he new sump and new oil no problem still going

seen a 1.9 8v 130 grade go to 8k rpm indicated on the ecu after it sucked some oil after a turbot failure i put examiner on afterwards to see what it had done lol and something like 8275rpm it was pretty loud and cause a windermere wide black out but it was still fine

our old doblo van had a 1.3 m jet 75 in it and it spent about 99.9 percent of it's life on the limiter or above it induced buy a duff gear change oops my bad :D we were ripping pirelli tyres down to nothing in 9000 mile to give you some idea lol

tbh i wouldn't be surprised to see 500k miles on a fiat diesel clock and i'm not joking

insidentally i have seen 250k on a 1242 petrol:slayer:

Thanks for that insight LP - very reassuring (y)

My 2007 Grande Punto 75bhp Multijet has hit the 392000KM (243500 miles)
Still on original gearbox. Only had to change the usual suspension components that the pot holes in rural Ireland wreck and a MAP sensor.
Owned from since Sept. 2008 (got an excellent deal from Fiat Ireland due to 2007 plate) Have religiously changed oil every 20k. Always used Castrol magnatec.

Exactly I don't know why people here are suggesting such low numbers
200k miles should be easy for a diesel given regular servicing
