Your Money, Their Tricks

That and last test I saw aircon only uses more fuel at idle...at motorway speed the increases in consumption is fractions of a percent.

Although if daz is quoting directly...why not just never use your lights or heater? Trickle charge your battery before every trip to stop the alternator from increasing ancillary drag.

Trickle charge your battery before every trip to stop the alternator from increasing ancillary drag.

Car manufacturers do exactly that before conducting official mpg testing.

Or create a DIY hybrid - just remove the alternator completely and charge the battery overnight. Fit a decent deep discharge battery & I reckon you'd get at least as good a range as most of the electric cars out there ;).

Back in the olden days, the test for battery & alternator in good condition was to have the car running at idle, turn on hazards, beam, heated rear window, blower etc & listen to the tone of the engine.

A system in good condition should cope with all that load without the engine starting to labour.
So driving in winter with dipped beam, heaters, wipers etc should still put out enough to put something back into the battery.
