Hi All,

Help needed please, I have had a good scout about and can find nothing on this particular set of symptoms, if anyone can give a clue I'd be much relieved!

I have an 05 plate 1.3 Panda Dynamic Diesel, great little car etc, etc. The wipers (Front) were a little juddery when wiping, but all was O.K.

On the motorway, in pounding rain they just stopped. That was that, until the car sat overnight, and then they started working again. Strange.

Now the wipers will give 2 or 3 wipes and then stop, ALWAYS either one third of the way down the screen on the return stroke or about a quarter of an inch from parked on the up stroke.

I thought, how hard can it be to change the motor, (Having read a few threads about sticky and greasy motors,) and after being quoted £212 by one place and finding that most people can not get hold on one at all, I bought one off Ebay for £37, fitted it and although it is now not juddery, still EXACTLY the same.

This leads me to wonder if it is the relay? so, here's where I need the help, does that sound like a reasonable diagnosis, (I thought it might be the relay in the first place but a lot of threads said to was likely the motor, so given the judderyness of it it had to go anyway!)

And, slightly more embarrasing, where is the relay?

Many thanks for any help recieved, I can do the mechanicals but electronics are a bit 'Black Arty'.

Thanks Charlie, couldn't see it under the bonnet in the main fusebox, will go and have a look under the dash now.......

Right, nothing but normal little fuses under the flap by my right knee, and a second look in the main fusebox under the bonnet confirms, there is nothing I can make out as a wiper relay, the only on I thought it might be was a red herring.

:bang:

Might be worth checking wiring and earthing to wiper motor ect

The 'click' is coming from the BCM, does anyone know if this is responsible for the wipers too, I am if the impression that it is linked to windows, hill start, all sorts of bits. As it is making the noises, and as I can't find anyone selling wiper relays for Panda's, and as I can't find one I am starting to wonder.

Have given up for today, bad light and worse temper are not helping. Tomorrow I will trace back the wiring from the Wiper motor and see where it goes.

I will post the eventual solution, I hate it when you manage to find the question you're asking but no one bothers to put the actual answer! (n)

Today I have had a good look at my eLearn manual.

There is no separate relay controlling the wipers, it is all controlled by the BCM.
The column switch just sends a signal to the BCM.

The wiper motor is earthed. This is on a multi-connector described as Right Front, and appears to be on the bulkhead ahead of the driver.

The BCM sends power to either the slow or fast speed as requested. When it turns off, the motor should continue to the park position.

As it is stopping at random places, and not parking properly, I would guess at a connection problem, not a BCM problem. I'd expect the BCM to either work, or not.

Start at the motor and check all connections. Try to follow the wiring to find the earth block as described above and ensure all connections are clean and tight.

If that doesn't work, the problem may well lay inside the motor, but as you've tried another, this is unlikely.

There is another earth connection in the footwell, near the BCM, which could need checking.

If not sorted, can you connect a voltmeter to each of the wiper inputs and test what is happening? This will show if the power to the motor is consistent or not.

Check the connections to the BCM, all need to be clean and tight. Have you had any water ingress problems? As these can often cause electrical problems.

Update:
Haynes suggests that the wiper earth is front centre, so might be on the bulkhead. (Sorry, too idle to go out and look at mine)
Wiring to the motor are:
Lt. Blue - 1st speed - from BCM pin 10
White/Red - 2nd speed - from BCM pin 9
(White with red tracer)
Brown/Purple - Intermittent - from BCM pin 8
Black - Earth - To Earth point.

Many thanks Nigel, that is a lot to go on with. I will have a look at all that later on in the week and see if I can find anything, now hoping for something looking loose or 'wrong'. Will also check for connectivity.

Thanks again, will post as soon as I have more news.

Hi, how hard was it to change the motor and where is it?
Mine is making a hellofaracket and occasionally stops completely. Sounds like the motor is goosed.

Hi RTJ,

I ended up stripping down the motor and in particular cleaning and bending the little finger contacts down onto where they run on the contact tracks inside the box just in front of the motor. Wipers have worked fine since.

The motor is under the weather trim in front of the windscreen, just drop the whole unit (rack and all) out, only a couple of bolts, and it's really east from there.
