General whining noise in 3rd gear

Hi. My car (brava 1.4sx) has developed a whining noise when i go into third gear. Very occasionally i've heard this in the past before usually when i've been going up/down steep hills. Now it seems to be doing it permanenently. It eases off if i take my foot off the gas and then comes back when i put it on again. Only does it in third. My clutch is worn and slips a bit, but drives fine otherwise. I just wanted to know, is this whining sound related to my worn clutch or would it be something else? Gearbox for example? My mot is due soonish and am aware i might need to change clutch soon but i don't want anything else to replace as otherwise i would probably sell the car. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

tbh sounds like the gearbox is on its way out. as its only in third it should last abit longer. although when did you last change the oil?

Had an engine oil/filter change about 3 months ago. Never changed gearbox oil if that's what you are refering to. Only do low mileage (about 7k in 2 years). As i say, car drives fine, no problem engaging gears, smooth gear changes, just this whining sound, although past couple of days seems to have eased off a bit.

keep a eye on it, the only whines that come from gear bags are that of worn/dead bearings and then you need to recon or new box. id swapthe oil if its never been done. should be done every 3 years regardless iirc

Will get my trusted mechanic to check/advise at mot which is due in about a month.

Definitely change the gearbox oil, it will be old and tired and horrible (and maybe low as well). Easy and cheap to do, could make a lot of difference.

Changing the bearing in a gearbox is no big deal for a decent mechanic...

Hey guys, newbie here. I have a 1.9 turbo grande punto, it has a whining sound that started in 1st, so started pulling off in 2nd, the noise is now there too. I also get an, only way I can describe it, a bearing rubbing or grinding, when off the accelerator in 5th and 6th, any opinions? It's currently in having its 2 EGR replaced, the 1st being only a year ago.

Any help much appreciated
