Is there information on how the 96k miles were generated? ie. motorway or town driving? Just thinking about wear and tear on components given the mileage.

I bought a Mazda 3 (ok, different car but the point is the same!) on slightly higher mileage once. Was under 6 years old but ended up giving me so much grief with worn out parts. Just makes me think you're need to be sure its all good and reliable with that sort of mileage.

Went to see the diesel yesterday. Wow, what a let down. Owner hadn't bothered cleaning it, and although it started OK, the gears were knackered. Could just about get it into gear, Also gear knob and steering wheel were very worn: so answers how the majority of the 96K was done eh?
Engine actually sounded sweet.
I would consider offering £1500 and get the gearbox sorted.

Wasted journey really :bang:

Tried a 1.4 in Warrington on the way: 66K miles £2995 what a banger, clutch was on the way out, and body was covered on scrapes and scuffs.

just shows how crucial the test drive is.

Just as a matter of interest: how much would a new gearbox cost for the 1.9?

May help:

Just spent £2200 getting my noisy gearbox and clutch sorted on my Mjet sport with 28000miles on the clock. When the gearbox was stripped parts of some teeth found to be missing and the dual mass flywheel was also about ready to fail. This is not the M32 gearbox, so you pay your money and take a chance with any box.

I bought a 2008 mjet 150 sport which had 22000 miles on the clock when i got it and i did not notice any problems at the time, i am a fitter by trade so i know alittle bit about these things. 6 months later it got very noisy and i got the box stripped and thats when they found the gearbox and clutch problems. I think the box is a C530 6 speed. I am in my sixtys and do'not thrash the car

Hi, and again, thanks for all the info. It's been a great help.

I eventually went for the 1.4 T-jet Dynamic 120 (link shown in earlier post). It's outside the house now:)

I got it for £3200 with 15 months full (including electrics etc) warranty and 6 months tax, so altogether pretty happy with the deal. Cambelt and water pump have been done. Drove it home last night - around 30 motorway miles - and it felt very nice, lots of power and 5th/ 6th gears felt good. I'm going to get the gearbox oil changed anyway soon, and will get it serviced in a couple of months. It's done 72K so I'm sure that things will crop up, but fingers crossed :D

BTW: The original diesel I went to see in Stoke a couple of weeks ago (the one who didn't want the inspection?) is now down from £3490 to £2995? I would have bought that if they'd only let someone check it out independently: weird people!! (n)

Will report back soon when I've given it a good couple of runs.

Thanks again forum, you've been great (y)
