What made me smile today, looking at the amount of photos I took in Amsterdam this weekend every time I saw a Panda... So many 169's and new types compared to the UK, it's astonishing how less 'stuck up' they seem when it comes to cars. I seen a LOT of old tiny Peugeots 106's etc too that mostly seemed to disappear from my local area about a decade ago too still plowing about!

Sounds like they have a much better attitude towards cars, that we could learn from in the UK!

Definitely! Looks like less people over there measure their masculinity by their choice of automobile lol

There were a few idiots driving German cars through the city centre (the real narrow streets next to the canals with one way traffic, plastered in cyclists / pedestrians / trams).. But the clear frustration in their red faces and desire to rev the crap out of their diesels (sounds terrible btw) for the 15 metre openings before slamming on again was entertaining!

But if you guys are being honest, I’m sure you understand that there are equal number of valid, logical, rational and beneficial reasons to buy German cars as well as Fiats. It’s not black and white in your favour or mine.

There’s a LOT of hype in German cars. But also, there’s a lot of GOOD. In us folk who drive Fiats, we’re placing our highest values in different areas and willing to put up with the bad sides of Fiats as a result. Clearly, German car guys don’t personally value some of the reasons some of us want Fiats. That’s fine.

But don’t act like there is zero merit in some of the reasons for half of the population to want German cars. It’s no more ‘idiotic’ than choosing Fiat.


For you guys / those companies / interests to just write off anyone with that different opinion on the matter as ‘idiots’? Well, maybe reconsider where the true problem lays.

I’m certainly not an idiot, and I know there are probably very few on this forum in all honesty. I want a little Fiat, and maybe you don’t. I won’t imply that you guys are idiots. There’s a lot of truth and validity in what the German car drivers say. Just try and understand there’s also truth and validity in what Fiat drivers say. We’re all adults. And we’re not idiots.

Very well done! It's certainly just my opinion that driving big cars down tiny congested streets is an idiotic action ~ Perhaps it is, perhaps it isn't..

I thought we were politely asked to end that, I have a lot more to say but am trying to adhere to the moderators wishes! lol

Hey, I did when I was there out of curiosity and I saw that.. Well it is disappointing, but I suppose it's still the lowest on the scale of 'German car', right?!

It was a fantastic city / country experience. But I guess nothing's perfect ;-) lol

I did see this art installation in a shopping centre... which did really speak to me.... "Can't they build them all like this?!" (y)

I'm one of those strange people who considers a nice VW to be a suitable substitute for a BMW / Audi / Mercedes.

Although I'm highly likely to end up in a 330e M Sport, I'm awaiting the prices and a test drive of a Passat GTE, too. I have a soft spot for Passats, as I had a B5 1.8T (Golf GTI engine, a proper sleeper in SE trim with plastic wheel covers) - and my first proper company car was a B6 2.0TDI SE.

that is Ichwan Noor's Beetle Sphere, very famous and iconic, he used the beetle because it was so iconic.

Yeah, maybe back in the time of the Beetle! Even if it was quite literally the face of a nation of you know what’s.... ;-)

Perhaps I’ll sculpt a Panda into a sphere someday for the same reasons, to object to over-engineered, over-hyped transportation choices we see today ;-) (just joking)

Hey, when it comes to VW and Audi why over pay for the same chassis and engine? Might as well take the more affordable option. Why not even go for a Skoda? Same thing.. right? ;-)

Nope, the Current generation A4 shares its platform with the likes of the Lamborghini Urus and the Porsche Cayenne, the previous generation was a platform shared with the Porsche Macan and a host of other Audi’s

The Passat, shares its platform with things like the TT and the A3 amongst a host of other VWs, however the A4 and the Passat, don’t share the same platform.
 
VW have a mid-sized FWD platform 'MQB' (and an evolution of this) which underpins much of the range - Golf, Passat, Tiguan, T-Roc, A3, TT, Q3, Leon, Ateca, Tarraco, Octavia, Scala, Superb, Karoq, Kodiaq. There are probably some more that I've missed!

Audi use the MLB and derivatives, the basis of which is used in all the range from A4 right through to Bentley Bentayga.

They've always done this - the first 'footballer' Bentley Continental (ie. the first post-RR demerger) was often known as a Phaeton Coupe.
 
They share more than these guys would ever admit to... That’s why investors overlook Porsche and Audi in favour of actually exclusive high end cars like Ferrari etc, because they are more unique.

I always laugh at the big Audi’s on my street “ooh I want a big sports car but I can’t afford petrol for it” (buys a diesel) ;-)
