On Friday last week we got the message you never want first thing in the morning, from the childminder telling us she was ill and unable to take my boy that day, so seeing as my wife wasn’t home as she was still working a night shift, daycare duties fell to me.
We spent most of the day at home, but by the afternoon he was starting to get a little bored and restless, so I opted to sling him in the car and take him off to see my brother at his body shop. My boy loves going round there as he loves his uncle but also loves the workshop which is in two parts with one side being used for building campers and the other side the body shop with the car sized oven and preparation areas.
When we arrived he was so excited to get out and see uncle that before I was even ready he was already climbing between the front seats to get out of the car, having already unclipped himself from the car seat.
This distracted me and as he was handing me a bottle toy to hold for him. This lead to a mistake on my part and I had unknowingly not put the handbrake on however as is a habit of mine I was still sat with my foot on the brake.
I lifted the boy out of the car to stand beside it, I handed him his toy and as I then got out of the car, my foot came off the brake and the car rolled only about 6-12 inches backwards and a sign for another of the businesses made contact with the back of the car with a properly sickening crunch.
As I peaked round the back of the car not wanting to know what I was about to find, I was relieved to see that the sign had punctured the rear tail light not seeming to have caused any damage to the body work. But I was still nervous as these are all LED tail lights and specific to the golf cabrio which is not a super common car compared to the hatch backs.
The obvious solution was to head to eBay and my heart sank a bit when all I found was driver side tail lights and not the passenger side. A little bit more specific searching and I started to get some results but my car has 4 parts to the rear lights with half on the car body and half on the boot lid, I needed the boot lid part on the passenger side. Results were coming up as quite expensive.
I put eBay down and thought I would leave it, have a think about it, there was no urgency to getting it fixed. But then about 2 days later I got a notification on the eBay app then that one of the sellers had made me an offer of a much lower price, just £35 for the part I wanted.
Now this is obviously a used part so I was worried it might have scratches on the lens etc but this morning it turned up and it was like a football of bubble wrap. When i did eventually find the light in the middle of all the bubble wrap it was in very good condition, however it did have some sort of residue on the lens which I was able to easily clean off with some tar and glue remover.
One of the best things about the golf is it’s ease of access to things like bulbs and fuses, non of this need to take half the car about, and I was happy to find that despite the cabrio having no replaceable bulbs they still had a little access panel I could pop off to then remove 2 nuts and remove the light unit, pop the new on in and a quick test showed all the lights working perfectly.
So long story short I I was not happy that I had damaged the rear light but relieved that it had not caused more damage, then pleased that replacement was easy and straightforward. The thing I was most pleased about was the total repair only came to £35 all in including postage.
Anyway still not impressed about the accident or the need to repair it, but could have been a lot worse
