@Dripsey. I've had some very interesting chats with Grant at Gendan regarding security gateway workarounds mainly on the VAG stuff as I own a quite new Skoda, but also, in passing, regarding FIAT vehicles. So far I've not worked on a FIAT that has security gateway but it's bound to come at some time with my passion for small Fiats. Give them a ring, I've found them very approachable and friendly and very knowledgeable.

Yes seconded. They are great. Look for the user forums for MES too

Hi Bill. Do you by any chance have the MCS software? Nothing appears able to reset service interval spanner on 2019 500x. Help 🙏🙏
Hi Dripsey,
Yes, I do have MES, but have not got the device to bypass the gateway, as both my vehicles are fine without.
I have however been thinking of gettting one, 'just in case', so have just ordered one, which should be with me by the end of the week.
I'm guessing you're just up the road from me.
I'll let you know when the by-pass arrives, and we can delve under you dash.

Like you PB, I don't have a Fiat which needs this yet. However I'd be very interested to know how you get on with it.

I've decided, when the warranty is up in another 18 months, I'm going to hand off the routine maintenance and more serious repairs on the Scala to AVW our local VAG indy, which is partly owned by one of my best friend's son in law and are VAG specialists. VCDS has free updates of course but my interface is now so old it doesn't properly communicate with the car and a current interface is not cheap. Then there's the VAG gateway and the fact certain tasks, apparently, now require linking to the VAG computer? Anyway, the "tech" in this car is way beyond anything I've run into before and I'm worried I might wreck something.

There does seem to be a policy by manufacturers to make it almost impossible for owners to repair their own property.
I recall it was BMW I think in the early 80s that first brought out a tool to confirm their models had been serviced by the dealer, however shortly afterwards it was possible for dodgy car salesmen to rent a similar tool from the local Motor Accessory shop for a few minutes to turn off the service light without actually doing the service!:(
There was meant to be some form of European Regulation to allow non franchised dealers to work on vehicles without invalidating any warranties, but that seems to have been watered down.
I often wonder how Third World Countries get on, as there seems to be many new vehicles, but few Dealers? I did think maybe they have a simpler design of ECU system.
I found a few years ago I couldn't even fit a replacement circuit board into a washing machine as it had to be programmed by their "engineer" with laptop.:(

Many years ago Mrs J's sister and her husband went to live in Cyprus - before it became a popular tourist destination and we would go to stay with them for our holidays. They had an old house on the road between Larnaca and Dhekelia base and did most of their household shopping in Larnaca. I remember being absolutely fascinated by a chap who repaired car bodywork on the roadside on the outskirts of the town. Seemed to be just a few hammers and dollys and his wonderful skill with them. Could have watched him for hours.

Today, I finished the wiring and turned it all on. All works as it should. Just like when the house was built, it didnt need a school of inspectors. Its all been done properly and correctly. All the earths are wired up, unlike before, lights and sockets are separate, The maximum number of wires on any junction is 3 unlike the situation where 13 mires went onto one junction box. The appliance cable used by the person fitting the boiler has been removed and its done with buidling grade cable to the current standard required. There are no live ends of wires in the stud walls and the kitchen light and hall lights which had been removed by Norfolk County Social Servies contractors have been reinstated and the dodgy smoke alarms binned as well. Who thought vandalising the mans home in such a bodged manner was a health and safety benefit or care, in any sense, I dont know. I hope I never meet them or there could be trouble. I know that there are no damaged wires, no badly pared insulation, no reversed polarity and indeed no other faults. Add that all wires are colour coded and labelled and Im happy its not a fire risk and that its as safe as it can be. Knowing where all the cables run, where the conduits start and end are benefits. The fact that the wires also have a pull rope built into the wall in case any need changing in the future makes it feel proper. I know where every wire runs and I think the effort was worth it. My neighbours sister is having a rewire done this week for £7500. This job all in has cost £930, including the extraction systems, new light fittings, wire switches, cooker outlet, and conduits etc, My last job is to connect the bathroom extractor once I have decided on switching. I bought a humidity controlled bathroom extractor an and there are options on how it operates. In Manchester it runs all the time and you switch it up for odour extraction on the door switch. Im not sure we need 100% fan exatrction in the dry east of the cointry so I may wire it more conventionally and allow the humidistat just to control fan speed. That isolator switch, up by the ceiling is a fiddle to get at so I dont want to have to do it twice.

All the rubbish has now gone and I managed to speak to the boiler man today. Hes going to come and fit the radiators for me. £400 approx its a no brainer. My knees have really had enough. Once the second coat of paint has been applied I can install the tiled flooring and get on with kitchen and bathroom, which reminds me I need new blades for my planer. Next job - Skirting boards. (Hateful things)

Looks like your well and truly getting there now? Don't know about you, but I always like to feel there's something needing doing, I don't know what to do with myself if I've not got anything "in the pipeline". Think it keeps you going? otherwise I'd probably just sit down and never get up again!

I am a bit like that, now I am retired I end up buying cheap bangers that need work which keeps me occupied, trouble is the jobs always expand and at the end of the day they are still only old bangers which are worth nothing so hard to get my money back.
We used to say a good mechanic makes a poor car salesman as they try and fix everything they see wrong , unlike car salesmen who just tart up the outside for the buyer, do the bare minimum, sell the vehicle and when anything goes wrong say it's not covered by the warranty.;););)

I tried my hand at the car sales and I agree with you 100%. I think we actually sold quite good used cars with them all getting a workshop check and anything of consequence being sorted. However the one that really decided me to give it up and go back on the tools was an NSU Prinz I took in as a part ex. It was a very tidy looking car but it's wee 2 cylinder engine sounded like a bag of nails and ran so poorly it had trouble just moving at all! Because it looked so nice I sat it in a corner of the showroom but it didn't get a look from anyone so, after about 10 days it went outside onto the lot beside the petrol pumps. I couldn't actually tell you how long it sat there without a single expression of interest from anyone except the boss who pulled my leg roughly every second day about how it was a mounting negative equity purchase on my part. For those who don't know every used car has to carry some of the expense of the business against it - so advertising, premises costs, etc. If you keep it too long then you can't show a profit on it so get no commission when it's sold. Anyway, long after it had passed that point, an elderly couple walked into the showroom wanting to buy it, I think the wife thought it was "cute". I kept thinking "No Jock, you can't do it. What if they were your Granny and Grandad? No way you'd sell it to them". I tried quite hard to put them off and steer them towards something else - almost anything else would have been better. But in the middle of all this the garage owner walked in and took over and sold it to them. He pulled my leg terribly for ages after that - "Call yourself a salesman"? etc. I felt really awful about it and decided as soon as I could get a better job I was leaving - went back on the tools and stayed there.

I try and avoid the retailer that starts Am.... but I'm on a free trial of Pr.... right now that I picked up when I bought a couple of books recently

So Saturday I bought a Bosch GSR12V driver , arrived today , excellent little thing (it took 15 years to wear the predecessor out)

Just now I happened to be looking at other stuff, and spotted my Bosch had gone up slightly and was now being offered with an £11 voucher, making it about a £6 cheaper than what I paid two days ago...

I requested a call-back... explained how I've literally just received it today and the price has gone down ...... not a huge amount but it's the principle of the thing... :p

So Mr Zaphod, we can't offer retro discounts but what I can do is arrange a return for the item and you can buy it again with the voucher applied

So they'd rather waste (their) money on paying for a return and subsequent processing than just give me a partial refund of £6

Well Ama.... if you want to **** about I'll go along with it , return arranged and another one ordered , absolute insanity 😫😫

Absolute insanity !!

I got into bed with Paypal some years ago so I tend to gravitate towards ebay. Have to say it works well for me but you do have to be "aware" and do your due diligence not to be caught out.

I don’t think that’s all that unusual. If you bought it from a shop they wouldn’t do a partial refund of the difference they’d make you return it and you’d have to buy it again at the cheaper price. The fact they will let you return it without any reason probably makes it easier for you, as any other shop wouldn’t let you return it just to get a lower price.

The whole Amazon business model is selling as much as possible as quickly as possible for the smallest markup they can get away with. The idea is making money though lots of small transactions, small profits. Your single driver is a drop in the ocean when you look at how much they sell and ship on a daily basis.

A lot of the products are sold through 3rd party sellers. So if you return it, it might cost the 3rd party seller but it makes no difference to Amazon.

This was 100% amazon sold and fullfilled.

I have just got another retailer to drop the price they charged me by a whole 29% ! before they even shipped the order because I pointed out to them even the manufacturer was selling it at xyz

I normally do my due diligence research before buying most things, but I got caught out on that one (I got caught up in the moment of "the sale" ), but they responded excellently.

An older gent pulled over and asked for directions to the local Gliding club (doesn't everyone have one?).

Bit of a challenge as it's only 10 mins away but also in the Back Of beyond in terms landmarks very much turn "left at the field if you see cows you've gone too far".

While chatting I couldn't help but notice the large screen in the centre of his VW Tiguans dash that I am absolutely sure would have had sat nav.

I suppose the question is it bad manners to offer to set someone's sat nav for them? 🤣 Will say I didn't..and hopefully he got there..

Tell him to stand on the roof of his car and look for the wind sock.;)

I'm still pretty hopeless at setting up our sat nav in the Scala. Mrs J usually does it while I start off on any journey if it's somewhere we don't know. On my own I still get out the AA motorists map!

Firstly yes everyone has one ours is Tibemham which was an old ww2 airfield, they do winch and tow launching, and we get cars every weeks driving up and down the A140 towing extra long plane shaped trailers.

Secondly, airfields are a pain in the arse for satnav as they can often send you to the wrong entrance to the airfield so you can drive miles round the outskirts and not find the right way in.

3rdly depending on the age of the car it genuinely might not have satnav unless plugged in to carplay or android auto

In this case one entrance and exit as it was never an airfield as such and has always been a gliding field.

It just made me giggle trying to think of directions that you'd actually remember when it's all farmland.

That the last directions were "drive until you are about to enter a village, there will be a 90 degree turn left into civilization, head away from civilization and follow the little road into the middle of nowhere and then after about 5 minutes there will be a left...the only left onto a smaller road..then travel along that until you see a right turn to nowhere"...(You can't see the single low hangar from the road). Made me wish somewhat he had sat nav..

Couldn't come up with a fool proof way to describe this junction.. airfield is right if you stay on this you'll end up in the Pennines
