What's made you grumpy today?

What's made you grumpy today?

I would just love to see a transcript of a conversation between you two, with your accents, and that voice recorder. There is a great video on hte U Tube of a scottish man trying to converse with his Vauxhall Astra which gets me in stitches. Niot so funny when you want to dial a number in the car and it wont comply. Noops voice activated stuff varies from month to month, it will do exactly as asked for ages and then goes on a bender and wont do anything. except

"Copy fon book??"

After a few months of me not speaking to him at all he behaves again. Try as I might I cannot see any pattern or trigger to his behaviour. Maybe one over quick stop too many?
Don't worry after a short while listening to you guys, AI will be able to converse with your wife and kids on your behalf, oh! and your bank.;););)

Should have bought a smaller car..

Can confirm 80kg of sand fits in the boot..as well as a pram and all the spare clothes.

Also can confirm heavy sand is heavy although the car didn't notice it at all.

I KINHATE getting old. Hot and flustered after a tip run I set offhome with Mrs PN. Lets go buy ice cream I say. So we make the 5p yard detour tothe local farm shop. 3 tuns for tge freezer and 3 small tubs of doggy ice cream. What a price! Thats not tge story though. The grumpy old git driving totally forgot the trailer and tried to back into a parking space. Result. One Panda with the bumper half ripped off. Every hole in car and bumper ripped open. The main bottom fixing broken too wheel.arch liner has the captive 'nuts. It looks totalled. The white and black bit are separated abd some tangs ripped away.

Thegood news is after 4 and a half hours of unpleasantness temp 32.5Cs Its back together. Virtually all mended. THANKS GOD FOR SPEEDY FIX. The bumper fits better than before Guide in Panda Cross bumper removaland replacemeny is now on the stocks. I suppose its good it was made of plasticine. One broken bitstill.needs fixing, I didnt see that until was done. Thats about £750 I saved my self this, afternoon. Just about balances the £750 of h
damage I caused this morning....

That's about the value of most of my vehicles.;););)
I am sure like most of us , if we made a claim the write off value would be less than we have paid out in insurance over the last few years, plus they would soon re coup that with jacked up premiums.:(

i seriously thought this was an insrance job.It looked dire. Some PTFE tape, a pop rivet stem and a lot of Speedy fix though, and its just a scuff on the smallest wheel arch trim fitted to the bumper. I shall replace it as it also broke the already broken and mended end loop that locks bumper to wing. But a quick polish and its probably un necessary.. As you say pointless claiming that amount as they hammer you into the floor afterwards. Insurance really is a bad deal for all of us.

Silver lining is I did get to check the rear pads,

@StevenRB45 and @The Panda Nut Well, My phone is basically started up but definitely not fine tuned and there's shed loads of "stuff" I don't know about and I'm not at all confident in using it yet. However I've just found this site: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/?hl=en-GB#topic=7078250 which seems to address quite a lot of the "stuff" I need to know. I'm gong to spend some time with it tomorrow.

I'd much appreciate opinions on the following.

I haven't yet bought a charger for it or a screen protector. There seem to be different types of screen protector and they vary a lot in price. Plastic, different types of glass and a type which seems to be made from a softer material. I think the glass ones seem to be favourite in a lot of the reviews I've seen on but there are so many makes I'm feeling very confused. The situation regarding a charger is similar in that there seem to be lots of ones which will work but some are kinder to the battery than others. I see that there's PD chargers and also PPS (Programable Power Supply) and I don't really know what to buy - anyone like to offer an opinion and recommend an actual device? So far I've charged it just once using the charger for my Mrs ipad. It charged the pixel 8 phone from about 25% to fully charged in just under 1.5 hours and I noticed both the charger and the phone got quite warm during the process.

Getting warm is normal. 1.5 hours is very slow. Mine will charge from dead to full in 1.75 hrs. Google chargers. I have installed USB charging 13A sockets in daughters house 3.1A output I believe which match my phones fast charger. These are about £12 in tool station and are a straight swap for a std socket outlet. Im going to get some for here soon when hers is done. Most chargers are a 3 pin plug with a USB outlet. I have a couple of long 2m USB type c cables which make life easier. I FINF THE USB charging point in the Panda struggles occasionally to keep up with demand if using Sat Nav and other apps together. Noop is better than the 2017 car.

Artificial Insemination. Mmm. Thats ONLY for farm animals!

Pixels aren't known for charging quickly to be fair.

Depending on if you have it on all the time one option is to stick on adaptive charging.

This slowly brings it up to fully charged for your normal getting up time (or an alarm if you have one set).

Charger wise I've never done anything special I use a Samsung charger I've had for near a decade and a Samsung wireless charging pad that charges pretty slowly.

But if you're using adaptive charging this doesn't matter, it trickle charges to 80% then does the last 20 shortly before you get up so the battery isn't constantly sitting full. They've got their own battery management stuff I just let it do it's thing. You can limit to 80% total but this came in after my phone was 2 years old so never have as struck me as a bit horse and stable door in its case.

It seems to work, in my Samsungs the battery would be toast in 18 months, I don't need to do a middle of the day charge on this and it's 3 years old.

Main thing is just use a decent quality charger, screen protectors I'm not a fan, they no longer make the one I used to use. Again just avoid amazons cheapest..they can interfere with finger print scanners etc.

PD chargers are the ones that will give you the fastest charge, but you can use any usb-c charger (at the expense of charging time)
The device 'talks' to the charger and negotiates what charge rate it can handle.

PPS is just an option of USB-C allowing the charging device to change charging rates on the fly (if the device supports it), this may result in lower temperatures during charging.

The charging device would have to support it though..

The main thing is you can use any usb-c charger , you won't break it.

Last thing , if your phone has it , select 80% smart charging , it will (long term) preserve your battery capacity/lifetime (at the expense of only charging it to 80% most of the time), some will learn your use and put the last 20% in at the last hours before you unplug it.
(80% is the level at which you start to (long term) "abuse" your battery slightly, they prefer charging to just 80%

Mine takes about 45mins for a full charge, from 20% left, but I use the proper, manufacturers, charger…the weird magnetic charger takes 2hrs, so not impressed with them

To be fair unlike electric cars...they have very basic thermal management so absolutely don't want to charge them at full chat the entire time for best battery longevity.

Much of this stuff is "bench racing" my phone does X my phone does Y! Does it need to be fast if what you do is stick it on charge at bed time and pick it up in the morning? As long as the battery lasts the day and charges in less time than it takes you to sleep it's mostly meaningless.

Same with an awful lot of the performance figures they are advertised with. Main thing..."is it annoying?"

Thanks very much everybody. I think this may be the one I'll go for: https://store.google.com/gb/product/usb_c_30w_charger?hl=en-GB Seems to do the PD and PPS "thing" and is being sold by many on line for considerably less than this ad shows.

I'm undecided about a screen protector - but I'm a clumsy old duffer and, as I'm aging, I'm tending to drop things more often so I probably should do it.

Can't really go wrong with the official Google one to be fair, literally designed to work with the phone.

Like I say I use a much lower wattage old Samsung one.

It entirely depends how you are going to use the phone as to how fast it needs to be. Running it down to flat then fast charging is pretty terrible for the battery other than that if it's overnight adaptive charging will use a low speed anyway to minimise battery heating and increase battery life.

I can remember you commenting how smooth and slippy the casing was somewhere in the thread, but can't see if someone recommended a case (usually a soft silicone material) these have a ridge that extends a mm or so as it meets the screen edge... this will protect the screen from breaking (when dropped) far more than a screen protector that normally just protects the surface from fine scratches (despite screens mostly being made of gorilla glass which is supposedly scratch-resistant they do scratch)

Yes, I'd decided on the Spigen Tough Armor case as recommended by @StevenRB45: https://www.spigen.com/products/pixel-8-series-case-tough-armor
My daughter came on the phone just a few minutes after I'd decided which put it out of my mind. Later on I was getting round to doing something about it when the phone rang again, it was daughter again. "Don't buy a case Dad, there's one in the post for you from Amazon. By the way, we use Spigen cases with our phones and find them very good. What actually arrived was this: https://www.spigen.com/products/pixel-8-series-case-thin-fit It's obviously not as rugged but still seems to be quite robust and slips into my pocket more easily than I imagine the Tough Armor one would. It's very nice to hold, sort of a hard silicon rubber, and has the protective lip around the screen. Initially I was a bit disappointed as it wasn't the one I'd intended to buy. However now I've had it for a few days I really quite like it and it is much less bulky. Oh, and it cost me nothing! Think that'll do me just fine!

Think I'm set on the "official" Google charger recommended for this phone: https://www.mymemory.co.uk/google-o...1_4d1f6f7e39&wgexpiry=1783947342&cname=196673 This is the cheapest I've seen it for so far and includes free shipping. Only down side is it ships in a plastic bag rather than the official packaging. This worries me slightly in case it's a counterfeit but also it might suffer damage in transit. Anyway, I'm still checking prices - I've seen, on another site, an "official" one in it's packaging for just a few pence under £17.00. No hurry because I'm using t'other half's spare ipad charger - she has two, one for her phone and one for her ipad but the ipad one actually has two USB-C outlets so she can charge two devices at the same time - very conveniently that leaves the single outlet one free for me to use.

Who knows, could be , or it might be just bulk packed source (i.e. non retail boxes for a phone retailer)
