What's made you grumpy today?

What's made you grumpy today?

They can do that from your mobile phone too.;)
I used to switch my phone off when travelling at work unless it was to my advantage to have it on for personal comms. 50% of the time they kept saying dont answer when driving and 50% of the time they used to complain I was never contactable. This was the same group who used to complain I was late but trieid to restrict milage payments to the most direct route. As I wanted to get things done I would detour round congestion, roadworks, accidents and any other hold ups. I think in the end they decided it would be prudent to pay the miles I claimed as they never won the argument. Turning the tracker off was indeed one of lifes little pleasures. Knowing whos calling is one advantage of mobile phones and the blockers are great too. Im not that clever though as I never blocked my one really obnoxious boss. Shame as it would have really worked on her.

My angle grinder packed up. The switch has been dodgy for a long time and it required a thump to make it go. It recently started delayed starting and stopping. Ive been cutting channels in walls so decided finalyy to get the switch out and give it a clean. Unfortunately the switch was broken and the broken bit had gone so I couldnt work out ifmit was mendable. Dmaned nuisnace these cheap tools, reliability isnt what it was. Ive only had this little Black and Decker for around 30 years. Im at the age where I dont know how much I need a new one, so bought another cheap Black and Decker from tool statikon. I get my 5% off so about £32 . As it comes with 5 discs 4 steel gining and 1 stone cutting its a decent price. I passed on the special deals on Milwaukee producs c£450 from them. I can't see how that price premium can ever be justified. I have nearly finished cutting the wiring channels adn am irriatated to have to use a new tool on this crappy job . It might just get a good clean before I put it away. The shame of htis is the old tool motor looked really good. At 30 years or more old only a few bits were available for spared and that didnt include the switch. Sods law I think.

I think the old B&D stuff was better than today's offerings. I've still got the old cream and orange coloured 2 speed 1/2 inch chuck B&D drill I bought so long ago I can't remember when. These days I buy the Clarke Contractor branded stuff from Machine Mart and find them robust.

Edit. Just realized my angle grinder is a quite elderly black coloured B&D. It's worked well for me over the years but, now you raise this, it's switch is decidedly "notchy" in operation. Maybe it's about to pack in too?

Went on one of my longer walks today and came back along the Ferry road on the pavement for part of the way. I was really sad to see a quite old Fiat 500 (modern shape though, not a "classic") which was in a very neglected looking state - dirty with plenty of rusty bits round the edges, oh and no wheel trims which was what first attracted my attention. Anyway, as it went past me - it came up behind me - it was weaving slightly. Strange I thought. Then I noticed you could clearly see the front wheels were toed out to such an extent you could see they were "scrubbing" along. I presume this was why it wasn't following a straight course but weaving slightly. How can anyone drive a car in this condition? With a bit of luck it'll wear a tyre through to the canvas soon and the owner will be forced to do something about it.

On a different note. I do find it highly amusing that you can hear clearly what someone is saying on their phone as you walk past the car. It used to be that a phone call was very private back in the days of landlines. Now no-one seems to care. You can hear what is being said by people in cars and the things people talk about on public transport? I'd be mortally embarrassed!

While I'm on here having a rant. How is everyone finding the new Regs about giving way to pedestrians and bikes? As you all may have gathered I walk a lot and this morning I was about to cross a side road where it "T's" onto the main road - a situation where the new regs say you must give way to the pedestrian. I've completely given up with this one. No-one stops for you up here. However, this morning, a car, turning off the main drag into the side road I was waiting to cross, actually did give way to me even though I was hanging back expecting it to continue on. I was very surprised until I noticed it was a learner and the instructor had obviously advised his student to give way to me. My experience is so few people are complying with these new laws they really should just scrap them and go back to the old order. If you try to comply you invariably end up with someone nearly rear ending you as they are not expecting you to stop especially if turning form a main road into a side road. Blanket 20mph limits are quite often treated with equal disdain. I recon most people are going between 22 and 25 mph with a number just totally ignoring it. Also, if you try to actually go at 20, you quite often end up with a tailgater sitting on your back bumper trying to make you go faster.

My switch had clearly been assembled greased when new, but the grease was very dry so a bit of lube might work wonders. Im sure it was just debris that casued this one to fail. . The angle grinder was a greeeny grey which I think came before the black & oraange. Black has come around a few time in their colour scheme. I have a black jig saw that is pretty old. My corded drill was my dads and hes been gone 11 years. A sort of green. He bought it back in either the 80's or late 70's. It was not a happy bunny when I inherited it, but a strip down clean and regrease has it back to A1 again. I bought one the same which came with a small battery drill free a few years later around 85 I think. The little battery drill was fantastic and was used for everything but eventually the battery died, My B&D drill expired drilling 15 or 20mm holes through masonary after about 25 years. The new grinder is orange it looks good and has two different guards which is a step up. My new universal Milwaukee fixing nut fits and works. I would say a brilliant invention especiall at £5. Works like the quick release on my chainsaw adjuster. Its a real boon not needing to keep track on the spanner. I can put that in the bottom of the drawer I might put my old tool on eBay Ill bet there are plenty of folk who cant find theirs.

I also see my Aldi multi tool is bust as well. The head is not secure so it doesnt actually cut any more. I dont think Ill take it to bits as its under warranty. Might as well just ask for a new one or the money back. The head seems to keep coming undone. May be it was thread locked.

Talking thread locker, my brother says the new 13A socket outlets hes just bought have thread lock on all the screws, Ive been saying for years these things undo themselves over time. Hes always laughed at this but it seems Im vindicated. I shall put thread lock on all the junction boxes in my daughters bungalow. I just fitted the flush spots in the ceiling in the bathroom. They are all quick release and plug in. 3 power settings and two light tones but still good value at out local electrical factors. Im going to do a 3 into one join using these new fangled lever lock wire connectors. Of course doing this job none of the lights could go where I wanted them due to the joists being wrong. Ad hoc adjustments made , Im actually pleased the positions still look OK. As this is the first 'thing' I have really done / put in it feels like progress.

Actually I suppose I miss the fact Ive done the patio door and put in french windows, re hung the front with new lock and hinges and got the gargae door working and lockable, moved the soil pipe and rebuilt the drains in the drive, and hung a few new radiators, rewired it added extra two way light switching. and put in 15m of wall stiching rods, and a fair number of structural repairs as well. Oh and cut and removed 40 trailers of Leylanii fron the garden and repaired the fence in several places. It is so odd how you do a pile of work and still think you havnt done anything.

I was walking our dog 100 yards from home and had to jump clear of a small Range Rover the other day. I owuld have been knocked down by TBW driving it. Sadly that day no walking stick which was just as well or I would be facing criminal damage charges. I do have a VERY loud voice though so she will know what I thought of he antics. I seem to remember Learn teh highway code you morn may has slipped passed my lips at at least 100 db As you say most people have not changed their driving. I hope I have always tried to give space to pedestrians and animals. The old rule, Steam must give way to sail is one Ive always used. The new rules go too far however. Thankfully people generally dont just jump into the road in fron of turning vehicles. I was just today turnin left as a woman and youngster were approaching the junction. I was going slow anyway and made to stop. The woman was supervising this boy who was clearly downs syndrome and waved me on. Observation is what matters. Clearly you must stop if someone steps into the road, and must be prepared to do so just in case. I think this is what the rules intend but as worded they are really rather silly I feel.

Tailgaters i speed limits are a problem I agree. In this area there seems to me to have been a bit more willingness to reduce speed, but its rural and I feel that makes a difference.

I agree about the socket screws coming loose.
Have you noticed that 13 amp plugs seem to work loose and need pushing in again over a period of time?
An electrician I know seemed to think it related to the AC current running through it. Any thoughts?

Im assuming loads of electrons passing along the wire cause it to chaneg, maybe vibration or minute swelling and contracting. I suspect a combination. Its pretty logical to expect some phsical effect will take place. Its interesting that low force tightening or push fit joins are the norm now. I wonder if there are known physics things going on. Im sure adhereing to the 6 or 7 lb/ft is a lot less than Ive done in the past. Being tight may prevent my theoretical swelling of cables under load and then encourage the vibration of the atoms to facilitate things slowlu undoing themselves. Less tight may allow the required expansion? Just a theory. ALmost certainly right! LOL

Fascinating. I've noticed the plug for our spare fridge in the garage tends to come loose. Part of my daily locking up regime is to check it's fully home in the socket. I just assumed it was probably something to do with the vibration of the compressor running - even though the cable is not under any tension.

Your a lot nearer Devon than he is, LOL
Not as near as me.
50 years ago in the Devon Country pubs drinking pints of 6.5% Rough, cider (known as diesel to the locals) the stuff only served in halves to you girlies from up country when down on holiday in case you throw up, ;) it was a well known drinking song.:):):)

Back in the 60's and in my wee 850 mini I met up with my pals from the Kidderminster area - old school friends - and we all went down to Devon in our various cars (my mini, 100e Prefect, and an old Mk1 Hillman Minx - the Prefect actually had an OHV engine in it so may not technically have been a 100e but it was that body type, not the later Anglia with the slantback rear window.) Anyway, that's all fine detail and pretty irrelevant. We were sleeping on the beaches and in the cars - sometimes under the cars but most evenings pretty much the worse for wear with drink. I got the drunkest I've ever been in my life on the local cider - which I remember was cloudy and had wee bits of apple floating in it. It also gave me the worst hangover I've ever experienced. I vowed never again!

Ford Prefect 107E if pushrod engine from memory? Sidevalve was 100E and later Ford Anglia was 105E.
If it was bits of apple floating in it you were lucky, farmhouse cider was pretty basic stuff cloudy and the Rough was very dry, I used to say it was like friends home made beer, you had to force the first pint down and after that it was so strong you never noticed much.
I have been in farmhouse sheds where the barrels are mouldy and damp, but what came out was quite drinkable, honest.;)

Been a grumpy couple of days.
Yesterday, heading towards the M4, joined the dual carriageway past Swindon, and immediately came to a stop. 7 miutes later, and 1 mile, we passed the problem.
An army Land Rover had broken down. But the vehicle was completely off the road, so shoudl not have been an issue, until a recovery vehicle arrived. But in lane 1, were a series of cones gently moving us all to lane 2, and a police car. The policeman was stood on the verge talking to the two army guys. If the policeman had packed up his stuff and f****d off, there would not have been a traffic problem. He could (should) have sat at the previous slip road, and followed the recovery vehicle, when it arrived, then blocked lane 1.

Got to Uncle's house, to find a gas bill. And a reminder, and a final demand. (Uncle died last year, we're still clearing the house, so no gas being used) Bill based on estimated readings. Eventually found the meter, took a reading. Actual reading is less than the previous bill's estimate, so they probably owe us money. Tried to submit reading online, their system failed. Tried again today, on home computer, "Date of reading cannot be before today, but can be after today." Isn't that upside down? Or are we spposed to estimate tomorrow's reading?

Earlier today, took partner for a hospital appointment. To try to reduce the backlog, they are running full clinics. But the car park is the same size as before. Joined queue at main road. 10 minutes to get to the fork where disabled can by-pass the rest to get to the disabled spaces closer to the building. Need this as pushing the wheelchair is not good for me, as currently blood pressure way too high. Disabled spaces full, 7 people waiting ahead of me, no movement. Circled around, main queue had reduced, joined that, into main car park. This is on a hill. Not a steep hill, but still a hill. Barriers count occupancy, and only allow one in for one out. Allowed in, so there must be a space somewhere, but some aisles do not connect to others, so choose one, may miss a space on adjacent lane. Found one, a bit narrow, and with 'extra' spaces painted opposite, aisle is narrow. Have to put the Doblo in forwards, to get wheelchair out the back. Then the long, slow push uphill to the hospital.
Once there, need to go up one floor, so to the lifts. If a passing lift is full, it needs to close and go, before can call again. 'Helpful' occupants insist we enter, despite insufficient spce for the chair. Am I supposed to push her in and race it up the stairs? That'd kill me. (That is not overestimating my condition). While trying to get the first lift ot go, both the others pass by, so a longer wait.
Eventually into the clinic, to find it busier than we've ever known it. Her name is called, I raise my hand, as we are sitting backs to the caller, and I stand up. Looking towards the clinic rooms, there's one woman, studying a file. I push the wheelchair towards her, as she turns and disappears up a corridor. Was that for us? Another staff member arrives, looks puzzled, and asks who we are. "Someone called us!" The prat who wandered off returns to claim us. Perhaps if after calling a name she'd looked across the waiting area, she'd have seen us, instead of going to check the inner waiing area, that she was now directing us to. 10 minutes there, and another nurse calls our name, and again, studies the file, instead of looking around. Then trips off down the corridor from whence we came 10 minutes ago. Eventually she returns and seems surprised to find us there. As if we were hiding.

This is one of a pair of appointments. Usually they are scheduled consecutively on the same visit, but not today. We have to go through this nonsense again in a fortnight.

On the upside, Panda passed its MOT. 19 years old and ready for more.

The breakdown scenario doesn't surprise me.
A few years ago driving on the A30 towards Cornwall I saw a vehicle had broken down on the other side and was safely parked on a wide concrete section under a bridge well off the dual carriageway with all the occupants safely out of the car and some distance from the traffic, cars were flowing freely in all lanes no issue, an hour and a half later I joined the traffic returning, several miles from incident and was in bumper to bumper tailback of slow moving traffic forced to the outside lane, on approaching there was approx. five police vehicles including a camera van on on the bridge above filming all the motorists stick in the jam they had caused! To say unimpressed would be mild, considering I had recently waited several hours for a response to an emergency 999 call!
I assume their excuse would be HSE regulations, but only guessing.

You may think that, but there are no regulations governing this specifically. This is down to the attending officers who are basically untrianed and this tend to make decisions simplistically. Clearly in quite a lot of situations its total overkill. We don't want to hit a stationary object and advance warning of these things is a good idea. A flashing beacon preferably blue, in advance of the problem, reduced speed on overhead signs even a warning sign if time allows will help, but until actual recovery starts its daft. If the police are too kin-thinck to coordinate the time of arrival of breakdown services to lane closures they shouldnt be employed on traffic duty. There is indeed far too much of this level in the H&S world and it stops work that could be done. Rules are meant to sensible keep us safe, nothing more in the vast majority of cases. First principles of traffic management suggests causing congestion is contradictory to traffic management codes of practice. I had stand up rows with the police doing traffic management jobs when they wanted some necessary and sensible signage removed becuase it was additional to the codes of practice. The fact that on site situation dictated it was necessary, to control risk or prevent immediate danger to life totally escaped them on occasion! I never lost the argument though and my control measures were removed immediately on completion of the works. We used to do road and roadside maintenance on roads where the traffic volumes we off the scale and above the level where you should not do so. I used to take this very seriously, and indeed would do formally recorded traffic counts speard over a 24 hour period if required, to see if we could do works in the small hours. Sometimes particularly near London it was not possible, so the choice was close the road or assess and manage the situation with the full range of possible measures in place. Again I never lost an argument in 16 years, and more importantly we never caused an accident. Its wasn't easy and I spent a lot of time on a number of road junctions ensuring the assessment and plan was right. People have to make a judgement on the day and, it gets more difficult as traffic volumes get higher and, less time is available to plan and assess as well. I remember my one of first jobs was sweeping and litter picking Park Lane and Hyde Park corner.

The only incident I was involved in was when being trained for high speed lane closures on the M5 one wet and misty afternoon. Thankfully no actual damage, but I bet the drivers of a couple of the sppeding cars charging past us needed new underwear that day after spectacular skids. One of our mobile warning vehicles failed to move when instructed as we progressed from lane 1 to lane 3 to put on the moving lane closure on the outside lane, so we blocked two lanes instead of one. The incident was one I won't forget. I have a degree of sympathy with the play it safe brigade. Some of my risk assessments and traffic plans took 2 or three week to design. One bit of the job I enjoyed. I hate being held up and liked to get from A to B as fast as possible. Being a nutter made me acutely aware of bad driver antics, and probaly meant I was better at it. I seemed to end up doing all the bum jobs.

I think my Chromebook may be dying. Sometimes the keyboard works, like now. Sometimes I have to use it as a tablet. Sometimes it just shuts down or freezes. I'd swap it out with the groj laptop, a Samsung Windows 11 workbook, except, the audio has gone south. I use the groj laptop for tunes 99% of the time. If I lived where I had FM/SW reception, I'd use a radio. I can get AM but there's nothing but talk radio or sports to listen to.
The Chromebook is from 2018 or 19, so maybe it's time to write it off.

Not as much grumpy as murderous, extremely angry and wanting to wipe Microsoft of the face of the planet along with thier **** stupid ill thoiught out and badly made updates. Add to this anyone who say computers cannot go wrong. How do I know ********* mircrosoft have done an update. well take your pick
Today its type a / and get a -. As this is one symbol I use to get access to stuff it messes up basic entry to my computer and who's at the back of it yes you guessed is the sick bunch of **** that call themsevles Microsoft with another one of their B useless updates.
They have managed over the last few years to screw up my wifes computer so totally with one update it had to be binned We never managed to unjam it. It seemed to do in my daughteres identical laptop as well but a new hard drive gotthat working .
They have managed to stop my sound and my graphics from working requiring HP to get directly involved with them to restore order. Removing my sound was regular feature ofmtheir 'udates' a few years back on every update. Then after they update that changes a lot of basic screen architecture, you have to suffer their trying to ram 365 down your throat and asking fro dredit card details. IN YOUR DREAMS! Then yet again remove their internet rubbish off the screen No, I dont want and will never used edge or any of its wigets. Hate them it doesnt come near. You wouldnt need trumparse to push the red button and start world war 3 if I had a nuke button I would have pressed it today without hesitation! Death would be too good a fete for them! How do they manage to do, this and, more to the point get away with it. We dont need things changing for changes sake, and I will not pay you for software I have not asked for. Please try the direct door step selling of this **** and see what the result is!

Edited as Mrs PN has just told me I got it wrong again and told me to correct it.

This reminds me Mrs PN had St Johns ambulance on the door step asking for money and she, being more reasonable than me said no. She had issues with an air ambulance collector who not only wouldnt take no for an answer but were extremely rude. After listening to his abuse she shut the door. Im still hoping he comes back when I am here, so I can deal with him in an appropriate manner. Guide dogs who we used to give to, kept phoning and demanding to see my then 12 year old daughter in who's name a donation was being made and demanding an increase. Mrs PN said the donor was 12 and would not be speaking to him. After listening to high pressure techniques verging on offensive she said the donation was going to stop. From then on the answer is no and it won't change. Ill give freely to good causes and my usual mode is for disaster appeals. The boxing day? tsunami a few years back shocked me substantially into making quite a big donation immediately the first appeal was made. There are so many causes all valid and all needing support and its not possible to support them all.

On the latest occasion the chap from St Johns was not taken aback or rude when told no busniess from unsolicted callers on the doorstep, he just said oh thats OK, I can come to the window if you like and we can talk there. LOL

I think we need a MUCH bigger dog. Q the RSPCA... Im leaning towards them right now as the appeals they are making are begining to feel pretty desperate.

AT least thinking of others in more need than me helps amke the grumpyness go away.

On the side of the older laptops is a key, if you wind it up they keep going a bit longer, failing that they make a good doorstop.;););)
