What's made you grumpy today?

The very loud disrespectful booing by the Scottish football "fans" whilst the English national anthem is being sung ,that virtually drowned it out on the tv sound .
Where were you after 90 minutes when England handed out a better performance you amateurs ? 🥶

I didn't even watch most of it ,flicked over to it during ad breaks in the WRC highlights show .
I didn't boo when a Finn beat the Welsh fella .

Well, that's not the english national anthem, and the scottish fans were just telling the UK government what we think of them.

You cant really enslave a nation for 400 years of inequality and expect love from them, stockholm syndrome doesn't work up here :D :D :D

I agree, I know the rivalry is strong and fully understand that, but its also a shame when we disrepect each other like this. I also remember the reprehensible behavior and actions over many many years of and by english football fans which was deeply shameful and was done everywhere they went. I still intensley dislike football for that reason. I can just about stomach the world cup if we progress but only just. Its meant to be a sport.

It was however really heart warming to see the spontaneous reaction and sporting behaviour of the entire welsh rugby team after the Fiji match the other night. For me THAT is what sport should be about bringing people across the world together and demonstrating a proper level of repsect between nations and individuals. There is in general a distinct lack of moral fibre in our society that we all need to address.

Though not international, the rivalry in American football between the Green Bay Packers(👍) and the Chicago Bears(🖕) of the NFL can get downright nasty, though most of the time it's just good natured ribbing. However, the Bears played so poorly in the season opener Sunday against Green Bay that their own fans booed them. Being born and raised in Wisconsin, the Packers green and gold is legally part of my DNA.

That out of the way, it looks like I am going to be spending close to $1000 to fix the Ural. My rig is a 2007 and the last year with the Gen 2 cylinder heads. It seems that Gen 2 head parts I need are as rare as hens teeth and rocking horse poo. Gen 3 heads run from 2008 to 2018, are a bolt on, and available for a phenomenal fee. Jeez.

Of course I believe the majority of football supporters are good people with a genuine interest in football and a healthy interest in supporting their team in a civilized manner - Many of my friends would identify as such. I, however, have absolutely no interest in the game, or in most similar games like rugby, cricket, hockey, etc. and I'm happy to be left alone to pursue my interests in other areas. The problem is that football does seem to attract a greater number of those who behave in an objectionable manner. Edinburgh hosts many large team game events with Rugby and Football being the two most intrusive. If you're out and about the town before a big Rugby match you'll generally bump into a good natured bunch which is not the case with the football fans. Yes, many will be simply excited, boistrous and a bit "in your face" but there's also an element who are distinctly "nasty" and out for trouble. I'd much rather spend my time watching the hillclimbing at Doune or maybe a day out at knockhill, thank you very much.

What's made me grumpy today? Well, just been away on our holidays - 7 days around the northern Croatian Islands on a wee cruise ship - and had a really lovely time. Unfortunately started feeling unwell about half way through it but just thought I had a cold, Runny nose and occasional sneezing, didn't greatly interfere with the enjoyment of the holiday. Had a terrible journey back with long delay to the flight caused by the runway problems at Edinburgh airport, eventually getting back home at 3.00 am on the Monday morning. Straight to bed and woke up mid morning feeling pretty grim. Mrs J said "I wonder"? and looked out one of the Covid test kits we've still got. Damn it, I'm Covid positive!

I've notified NHS Scotland and the tour company (airline/cruise company) and been on the NHS Scotland website which advises: "If you have a positive coronavirus test result, try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days after the day you took your test, or from the day your symptoms started (whichever was earlier). You should count the day after you took the test as day 1"

Think I've covered all the bases? I'm already feeling quite a lot better but am very dizzy with a bit of a head ache still. Decided I'm going to continue to isolate and avoid people, like neighbours who are all keen to hear about our holiday, until at least Sunday or longer if I don't feel a lot better.

Just to make you all jealous? and trying to cheer myself up, here's a picture of the boat:

I thought you'd been very quiet. Glad to hear you're feeling better, probably caught it on the ship. that said it is now going round the UK at the moment so could have had it without symptoms before you left.

This is exactly my attitude to these things. Also I have no interest in playing the sports myself and see no interest in watching someone else do it. My brother who is an avid football fan, coaches football and has been a long time supporter of Norwich City football club, finds my disinterest in football to offensive as he can't get his head round why I would not be interested.

If asked who I support I would say Norwich having grown up in the city but honestly I couldn't care less if they won or lost and have no idea what/where they are in anything. I wouldn't even know if they were playing, doesn't even figure on my radar.

My wife likes rugby especially if its an international match, but again. I'd rather be doing a million other things than sat in front of the TV to watch sports.

Pretty much how we are except that it's swimming and athletics with Mrs J. Have to say though that although i couldn't give a toss for F1, I'd go out of my way to watch the V8 supercars or maybe even Moto GP?

Several sources of infection have occurred to me Andy. Might have been on the boat although it was very small, only 19 cabins I think, and most of the time on board was spent on the open upper sun deck or in the dining room which, due to the heat had outside doors and all round windows open - so it was almost like being in the open. The Edinburgh International Festival was on just before we went and the whole city is absolutely stuffed with people from all around the world. I try to avoid the worst of the crowds if I have to go up town but public transport generally is very busy so there's another likely source - They were saying that Covid was abroad in Edinburgh. Lastly, we attended the christening of our friend's "miracle" baby the weekend before leaving. This baby was a real miracle of survival being born very prematurely and it's a wonderful tribute to the national health that he survived. The christening was a very big affair with folk from all over the country in attendance and a large reception after the church. - lots of possibilities.

With both my grandsons involved in sports, my weekends are booked. I'd rather stay home but grandma insists on the support. Usually, that is, until she learns the away game is a 90 minute drive. That's at least four hours out of our day, then. I don't mind the occasional minor league baseball or hockey outing as the venues are nearby, but I try to avoid a major league event. On one hand, I count two major league baseball games I've been to, boring as hell, and one NFL game. The NFL game was pretty good but it was a 6 hour round trip drive and parking was a small fortune.

I think I've mentioned about how the garage that fitted our new gearbox back in the spring - talking about the Ibiza here - mentioned that there was a small amount of wear in the O/S inner driveshaft joint, this is a tripod type plunge joint, not all that different to that we find on many of the FIATs. I've been listening to it whilst driving and manually checked it a couple of times over the summer and there's definitely a bit more movement in it and you also occasionally hear a slight "tumbling clonking noise" from it when slowing down under engine braking on very smooth road surfaces where transmitted road noise is at a minimum. If I was just going to be doing local running about I'd leave it a while yet but there's a big family wedding coming up down near London soon and I don't trust it to do a long motorway journey so I've been looking for replacement options. Local factors contacted so far can't supply. Seen a couple listed on websites like Autodoc but although listed are showing nil stock.

So, today, gave the local SEAT dealer (uncle Arnie), a ring. The plunge joint is listed but forget it as it's been on back order "forever" - I've heard that the O/S inner joint is known to fail. (wonder why the N/S doesn't seem to get a mention?) still, that would explain why they're on back order? However don't worry sir because the complete shaft is listed as available on a 2 day delivery. Oh well, if I do it that way then I won't have to struggle with the boot clip - have you noticed how tight the clip has to be done on these modern harder boots when compared to the older rubbery ones? Mind you the new boots last so much longer. Ok, better go with a complete shaft then, How much? £607 (don't know if that was VAT inc) Woah, Help Ma Boab (old Scottish expression of surprise) Let me sit down for a minute! Thanked the man and put the 'phone down.

I'm just not paying that for a shaft. I'll give my pal at AVW a ring tomorrow, I'm sure he'll have a solution which doesn't involve me having to sell the family jewels.

Sounds like we are very much alike in this respect. I'd much rather go to a motor sport event than watch it on TV as you can then have a good look round the cars. My local track is Snetterton which generally has an open Pit and you can wander about freely (within reason) and get around a lot of the cars between races.

Having grown up around GT cars with my dad working for Lotus and later Audi and Bentley on their GT cars I tend to have more interest in endurance races, rather than the one trick(race) pony that is F1 where the car gets completely rebuilt after every race. Moto GP riders have to be brave and have skill as if they get it wrong they suffer.

The main thing is you're on the mend, plenty of Lemsip lol.

New boot and clips, take it apart, clean and inspect and then put it back together with fresh grease and a new boot and clips.

I did this on my old Punto 1.3 Multijet and the car did another 20k miles with no further problems before I sold it, and that was making quite a loud clonk when you accelerated or came off the throttle, basically taking up or letting go of load.
it could simply be the joint is getting dry.

I got it apart today.

Diagnosis is two burned exhaust valves, exhaust valve guides are toast, as are the stem seals. The cylinders are salvageable but the left piston has some scoring on the skirt. So, I'm going to order all new valves, guides, stem seals, and piston rings, though I may bite the bullet and price a new set of cylinders w/pistons.

In case you are wondering about removing the bits on the sidecar side, just pull the upper bolts from sidecar struts and lean the bike out of the way.

Hows the rebuild coming along

Stalled for the time being. I'll need to replace the heads with 08 to 18 heads as there is little available to repair the 07 heads. Mrs. Cheest, Buster, and I are heading out to South Dakota for a couple days of R&R with the new trailer. I'll order the new heads when we get back.

Enjoy your break. Im glad its not just western stuff that you cant get bits for. I suppose if you were in Russia there would be bags of good secondhand parts around.

How much was that one in the states? Seems like they are getting pretty valuable now £8k is a little under $10k
The last Opel Manta was sold here in 1975. The one I looked at was $3200 and that was several years ago. The last rebadged Opels in the US were the Omega B as the Cadillac Catera and the Vectra as the Saturn L series. It's rare to see an old Manta anymore, though I do see the occasional GT at car shows.

"Good" is open to interpretation when it comes to Russian parts.
Once we are back up and running, I'll see about getting some new valve guides machined and try to get my old valve grinding stuff back to do a proper rebuild. Maybe a little port and polish along with some nitrous injection.:ROFLMAO: That would either shear the teeth off the ring gear or pull the spokes out of the rear hub.

I spent a shed load of money having a Rotax aircooled 4 valve 500 single tuned by a guy who did Isle of Man racing engines, I never got it to it's full potential due to exhaust issues but still managed to rip out all the cush drive in the back wheel on a 1990 Jawa 500 R, it still languishes in my garage waiting for it's rebirth in the 500 Single Armstrong frame I have that I had wanted to create a Super Moto style bike, for over 20 years.

Christmas day 1983 saw a 60 mile race from Whitchurch Shropshire to the M6 In Birmingham with one of them. That was a very quick car for its day. Memorable as it was cold clear and dry and it was the only car I saw in all that way.
