What's made you grumpy today?

Except its clearly rotten as hell and the rubber is also all deteriorated and cracked to shreds.....

But no way of knowing these things are going to fail.

When I looked the day before there was surface patina and the bush wasn't as deteriorated.

Still if your superpower is accurately predicting exactly when a component is going to fail drop whatever it is you're doing as there's a team manager position going at McLaren. You would be an asset to any F1 team. ;)

Anyway the Blyton drop link failure and subsequent curb sumping were a blessing in a very, very good disguise.

On an average track day I rack up around 250-300 miles. Having come home early, made repairs and my Alfa has been back on daily duties I covered 186 miles when the seal went in my clutch slave cylinder.
If that had gone on track it would have been near impossible to get the old girl home.

Best of all these things happen in threes so drop link, sump and slave. She should be sorted for a while now.

Change the master cylinder while you're at it, they like to fail shortly after the slave and it's easier to do both at the same time.

145s consume front suspension components at an alarming rate, change anything that looks even slightly tired and stock up on wishbones, I get through a pair a year!

Sadly I had to replace the master on my GTV and it had been bodged before so I ended up taking the inlet manifold off to get to the pipes on the back.

Still have the 13mm pipe spanner "just in case". :bang:

Somebody reversed our of their drive into the driverside front wing of my car as I was driving past - moved the car sideways.

Wing is all dented and pushed in, couldn't get the door open initially, arch liner busted. Hopefully no suspension damage, but he must have hit my wheel/tyre.

Immediately he said "how can you say who hit who" & "is just an accident". Told him the insurance company could deal with that.

Absolutely devastated, I know it's minor in the grand scheme of things, but it really hurts to see something you've put so much time/energy into and cared for so much damaged like that - especially as it's my first car and most prize possession (aside from a cuddly dog, but that's another discussion). :(

Gutted..

To be fair unless he's going to say you swerved into his driveway or were driving dangerously it's going to be fairly hard for it be anything other than his fault.

Thank you. Nice for a bit of reassurance, thankfully this is all new to me.

Yeah I reckon so. Dashcam footage has wide field of view so you can see him before I could - but you can see he doesn't even look back.
I was in first gear, couldn't have even been above 10mph and braked just before he hit. He was probably going faster than I was. If I had been going faster he'd have gone right into the drivers door, so coulda been worse I suppose.

Main thing is from the sound of it, it was your right of way, you were doing a reasonable speed below the limit..in which case avoiding you is all up to him.

on a related note..

So which bit of the road am I having? Love it when people drive up the centre of very small roads with crap lines of sight. Good job I was doing half the prevailing limit..

There's a bit near where I work that's like that, if you can't stay on your side of the road - especially when you can't see what's coming towards you - slow the f'k down!

Basically everything here between Hag Hill Lane and the A636.

Edit: Just looking at that on StreetView provides a great example, as the Google car is being followed by a nob who can't stay on his side! :ROFLMAO:

Appears to think a Renault Kangoo is 8ft wide..

Driving into town in the MG it started making noise from under the bonnet. On the A17 with nowhere safe to pull over for two miles. A mile and a half later...

Pop! Squeak!

...and I managed to coast it to the layby. The water pump had failed and taken the cam'belt and subsequently engine with it.

:bang:

That was supposed to be the tow car for my Uno racer. Looks like I will have to replace it instead of getting the Uno now.

What engine was your MG? The water pump disintegrated on my girlfriend's old ZR160.

2.5 KV6 190 (230) hp.

Got £200 back selling it to a mate who has an old 827 engine in his shed.

I don't think it'll fit and told him as such but that's not my problem.

The cam'belt was changed with the MOT in October. What kind of garage does not fit a new water pump as a matter of course?

:bang:

It's a £30 part, three 10mm nuts and a paper gasket (silicone if they're bell ends). Feckless fecking feckers!

Strangely Austin - BL - Rover have always had more water pump problems than any other manufacturer. Could never see the reason, as the OE pump manufacturers also supplied other makes. The A-series, then later O-series, and especially the K series all had serious water pump issues. B-series and E-series more normal failure rates. With any K-series, the water pump should be seen as a service item, especially when disturbing the pump. Sad to lose another that way.

The 2.7 was a Honda engine, the KV6 a Rover engine, derivative of the K-series 4cyl. The Rover 800 first used the 2.7, then later the KV6, so if it'll physically fit in the space it may be possible, but with completely different wiring and hoses etc., quite a challenge. Ideally needs access to a complete 827 for comparison and supply of parts.

That's what I said. :)

BMW haven't been too great with water pumps either and the ZT was while under BMW administration. The fan bolted to the pump meant as soon as there was any imbalance in the fan or clutch mechanism of the fan it would take out the pump with it.
All my E36's were problematic. Now whenever I get one I replace the viscous fan with a Kenlow. ;)

Seeing this pop up on Shed of the week on pistonheads.

Not because it's terrible or anything like that..it just demonstrates how crap the modern way of premium cars is. 6 Cylinder...gone for a turbo 4, that's not premium..classy understated styling..replaced with M-design trinkets that add nothing..purity of driving experience..replaced by infotainment. Not just BMW by any means but just urgh!

This is why people welcome electric cars..

I don't follow pistonheads, however It seems to me someone needs to explain to them the meaning of 'Shed' in the context of talking about a car, they've written a wordy and slightly badly written article about a 'Shed' of a car while singing its praises and recommending its a better option than the new version of the same car....

When did 'Shed' stop meaning, well... errr 'Shed'

"Shed" in PH terms is an mot'd car for less than 1500 quid, usually something unusual, well preserved or a bit mental.

Does have a point though..despite ignoring the existence of the 4 series. The modern stuff is just not at the same level of class. Yes it's measurably better in all ways but something has been lost along the way.

Agreed. Had a Mercedes 190D in the family years ago, the classic Mercedes box of the 80's simply scaled down slightly, was not a big car. But lots of heavy metal especially the 5 cylinder diesel lump. It rolled along so comfortably there was no need to race it, even when I was driving it at 18. Those were the days. The Germans have lost that pragmatic high ground now, and infotainment is a big waste of time and money.
