Hi,

I'm new to this forum and this is my first post, had a quick search and I could'nt really get an answer to my question.

I've been offered a White FIAT Marea 02 1.6i 16v with 43k on the clock - £1600. Parkers guide says if its a good condition Marea I should be looking at £1300.. Hope you guys are able to offer some advise.

Thx.

Should find out the finer details today (fingers crossed) & rest assured I shall be hagglin ;)

Happy to hear it sounds like a bargain if indeed it's a minter.. shall keep you posted on the outcome.

Thx.

PS:What insurance group does the Marea fall into?

Managed to get an image, Can any of you tell if its a SX or HLX from this?
Apprantly it needs a new exhaust gasket, is this a straight forward fix?

Oh managed to get an insurance quote of £289 fully comp, not bad.

Thx.

Its an SX, i think, although has fogs.

On the exhaust gasket front i'm not sure as dont have that engine, depends i suppose which one and how accessable it is to renew. Also did you ask why the gasket is suspected? What caused it etc. Is it a garage or private sale?

it has the spotlights in the bumper which would make it an HLX but it dosent have the headlight washers so at a guess I would say ELX

Bill

Both HLX and ELX should have the washers? And polys too, the ELX is a higher spec than the HLX and seemed to come with the 20v engine, or one of the oil burners.

As its a later model i guess it has many extras, as no sunroof i guess aircon?

Hoping to speak to him at length today so I will be able establish if its a SX,HLX,ELX. Ref the gasket it was a very brief bit of info but I will ask why he thinks the exhaust gasket needs replacing.

One thing playing on my mind is the cambelt change, its done 43k and it shouldnt need changing till 70k but it's recommended to do sooner rather than later, but why on earth is it so expensive (£800)...

Thx.

I think £800 is for the 20v the 16v 1.6 shouldn't cost that much.

mountainmachine I thought the HLX was the higher spec.

A quick check on parkers says there was a 1.6 elx doesn't say if it had polys tho. might explain the foglights tho with the engine.

I am crossing everything with a hope it is a ELX but it now seems as thou i wont be able to talk to him till tommorow :(

Getting a bad feeling about this now :(

Any of you guys\gals know of car (any) going cheap... has to be reliable & in and around derby\derbyshire east midlands area?

Thx.

1.6 belt change should cost less then £200,

I thought the ELX was the Marea's version of the HGT, extreem luxury rather than HLX high luxury, i could be worong just going on what i've read and seen at scrap yards etc. ie 20v ELX's and ELX, HLX have pollys and plastic handles etc.

But as this is a very late(newest) it may be different. Dont let the timing belt put you off buying, the gasket would be something wanting done, if its the exhuast manafold then access is easy on a 1.2sx, but dunno about the 1.6. I would post a seperate thread about that and other info you get tomorrow.

phew £200 tops for a cam belt change, not so bad now :D

Luxury, Luxury :D :D not after anything earth shattering just somthing nice & clean which I hope this Merea should help out with, certainly if its the later model.

The exhaust gasket still confusing me.. but I am sure it will all come apprant tommorow, I will however put another post in the technical bit to see if anyone can shed any light on this.

Thx again guys.. balled over with how helpful everyone on here is & to date there has only been on wise crack which actually put a simle on my face :p (flashing blue light on top :) )

You get 20v HLX's like mine. Parkers says the HLX was between 1K and 2K dearer the ELX brand new. Don't think you get leather in ELX either although no doubt an #ELX owner will correct me shortly.:p

Ok some more details at last :)

1. Model - 100SX :(
2. No service history, all worked carried out by father in law.
3. Serviced 6mths ago
4. Never had cambelt change from new.
5. Has all 3 keys
6. 3rd owner from new
7. Tape player not working as little child dropped 2p in there :nono:
8. Its the manifold gasket that needs changing, noisey whilst cold but once warmed up it goes away, some smell in cabin as it leaks also.
9. 3" crack on bumper, his mrs reversed into a lampost :nono:

Now for the bad stuff, which has really put me off as it gives the impression a boyracer has owned it :(

1. After market s/s backbox fitted (unknown make)
2. After market air filter (induction), the previous owner had worn out the thread on the airbox, as a result it was replaced by a cone air filter (induction kit)

All in all not very good, maybe I am expecting to much from a £1600 car and I'm sure the list above reflects upon the cost but i cannot see any plus points.

Being supplied some images of interior & exterior along with engine bay so I shall post them then.

Your thoughts please...

Well I'd try get him down a bit with that list of stuff. Parkers says 1400 for a good one. which I'd assume means FSH and unmolested. It would be worth getting the timing belt done within the next 10K. The more I look at it the more I'd be thinking £1200. £1300 at the very most.
