I do apologise in advance, I'm probably terrible at researching.

Basically, I'm gonna sort my car out after Christmas, getting some Rotiform NUE's or something similar if I change my mind by then.

What size tyres am I after or what specific tyres if I want nice stretch, not too much but a cheeky bit of stretch.
Also I don't wanna blow the bank I only work as a waitor, but I'd like a nice mix of stretch, and performance.

Any help would be great... when it comes to wheels I haven't a clue what I'm chatting

If it helps I drive a t jet

I have 205/40/17 on 8.25j wheels and they look like this ImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1386360278.252107.jpg

I'm not scared haha

Also, i see tyre damage similar if not worse than that on a daily basis. From general driving and vehicle use, using appropriately sized tyres. So it's nothing to be used to scare people. If you don't want to risk tyre damage, don't drive anywhere.....

The above statement is as good as pleading guilty to deliberately (& not negligently) running an inappropriate fitment.

There’s no better topic than tyres to provide for the subjective opinions of every Tom & Dick. But the court will take the Dirty Harry view (“opinions are like assholes – everybody has one”) & refer to the very very clear …

“Each tyre fitted to the vehicle shall be of a nominal size appropriate to the wheel to which it is fitted.”
Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regs 2001 s.16

Q. Is a 8Jx17 rim approved for a 195/40(or 45)R17 tyre.
A. No

End Ex!

But thank you for bringing your interesting pics, measurements & expert (?) witnesses to court Mr R

I don't get this stretch thing. Surely if you have wide wheels you'd put wide tyres on them to maximise grip?! Why would you want a narrower tread?

Shorley tyre stretching must be a mot failure ?
If i ever came across a ''cap boy'' in a car with stretched tyres i tell them what an idiot they are, as last year i was on the to work and a vw polo tried to have a race with me, as he passed his tyre exploded and nearly took me out, i took him to one side after a bit of a struggle, and dealt with him.

Bridgestone Rim Conversion Chart (p19)

I’ve not looked very deep into this `show-pony’ stuff.
But it looks to me a rim conversion chart won’t indicate `approval’ for a rim with a greater width than the tyre width.
Can’t recall now the formula for optimum rim size – but it’ll be on one of Chris Longhurst’s tyre_bible pages.

Edit:

Just checked this - & it gives rim width as 85% of tyre width.
If you try his calc with 195/40(or45)R17 it returns 6½ to 8x17

But there are construction regs as well as approval regs to consider

thank you to everyone for all the relevant answers to my query, with examples and tips etc with pictures.. been a good help so far. Like I say I'm only after a bit of stretch so might go with 205's.

and to those offering not as relevant information (but yet helpful also) thank you as well for the input I do appreciate it but I do understand the on-road performance will be affected directly proportionally to the amount of stretch on my tires etc as well as MoT and insurance worries etc.. but that isn't what I asked... thank you any way and info helps

thank you to everyone for all the relevant answers to my query ...

I’ve not always followed FIAT OH options. I’ve had a Punto Mk2 on `outside OH’ tyres written-off in a head2head with Subaru Man - & the insurer assessor wasn’t fussed about it. But I’m more cautious today as I believe the insurer may use it as a means of voiding the contract.

I’ve used Bridgestones Pattern Digest (2008) for some years as my tyre/rim guide. So was surprised to find that Chris Longhurst’s rim calc included 8x17 for 195/40(or45)R17 tyres – but then I know Chris favours Yoko, so maybe a Yoko rim chart differs from a Bridgestone(?) But if you wanted to argue-the-point with the authorities I suspect they’ll be guided by some ETRTO or ISO standard.

Q. What comments have you had from your insurer?
