Technical What oil?

Now that the Loser Cruiser has passed its MoT, I'll change the oil & filter.


What oil (& how many litres) should I buy (it's a diesel)?

Any oil filter brands/types that are best?

From the handbook: "Synthetic-based engine oils grade SAE 5W-40 that pass ACEA B4, API CF and FIAT 9.55535-M2 specifications.". Oil filters are all the same in my experience, so the right size is all that matters.

Its a tad over 4 litres you need...try eurocarparts..they are doing oil and free filter for a decent price!

I use 5-40 or 10-40...just use fully synth or semi at worst and you'll be fine

I use Tutela Jarama from Shop4Parts. Not had any problems with it in 4 years, it's cheap, and I'm told it's what Fiat dealers use. I get the filters from S4P as well. With the 10% forumers discount, it's hard to beat

I use castrol 10W40 semi in mine... Seems fine.

I've decided on 10W40 semi, Euro Car Parts own brand.


I have a couple of theories about engine oil:

a/ There are fewer factories making it than we might think, so the expensive brands and the own brands might often be the same stuff.

b/ As long as the grade is right and it's changed once a year, a 175k mile engine will be OK.

Sorry to bump the thread, but I've mistakenly bought some 15w40, as I picked the wrong Castrol bottle up from Tescos. To save the trip back, and seeing as it is summer, allegedly, would I be okay to use it in my 115 JTD? I only ask as this is the only diesel (of 12) that I have had that have asked for 10w40.

I know that the numbers are down to viscosity of the oil at set temperatures, but seeing as mine has 162k on it, I would think that slightly thicker when cold oil would be better?

Answers on a postcard please!

Well, I'm kinda with you on that.

The 15 means that it's thicker when cold than a 5 or a 10, and will circulate a little slower on cold mornings.

At 162k miles, your engine has had all the sharp corners knocked off.

Put it in, drive it like you stole it & have fun...

Hi I'm glad that I'm not on my own wavelength with the thicker and older engine thing!
You all assume that after being stolen and driven that way that it is still running so that the culprit can return it!

I think that thicker when cold COULD mean that in the winter the (tired?) oil pump has to work harder to get the oil to distant parts of the engine.

But again, our engines have got this far. They're really well-built.

Think also (if you're old enough) when our older cars ran on 30 grade. The rubbish engines had to make do with that in the winter. 20/50 was a miracle...
