Good evening,

I'm a long term multiple Multipla owner who just changed over to a RAV4 as I live in a rural area. However I'm still doing maintenance on the 2000 Multipla JTD of a good friend of mine. Today we tried to get rid of his leaky oil pan gasket by wanting removing the sump and reappying new sealant. However this proved more difficult than we thought.
I could acces all screws accept the two maller ones at the flange between gearbox and sump. They simply cannot be reached. We even tried loosening the gearbox about 4mm to get acces untill i noticed It seems the flywheel itself is in the way.
Just to make sure; Do I really need to remove the gearbox, clutch and flywheel only to reach two screws holding the sump? It seems there are at least two types of sumps. I watched a YT video by Hubnut on the same subject but they removed a different type of sump than I have. I have the one they wrongly ordered from a breakers.
Hope some one can help me out.

Cheers,

William

Gentle people, I would like to give an answer to my own question. I discovered that Fiat was so kind to allow for two slots at the back face of the flywheel. When you turn the engine so that one slot is in line with your tool, you can just remove the screws. We were just about to start removing the gearbox al together when just for piece of mind I googled a picture dual mass flywheel and detected the cutouts at the back.
I can imagine that the first edition of the JTD came with a solid flywheel. When the dual mass flywheel, which is bulkier, arrived they had to modify it a bit in order to be able to still remove the sump. I think this early sump design on the JTD was changed later in life.

Sump cleaned and fitted with fresh sealant. Hopefully this cured one of the many oil leaks on this 220000 mile example.

Cheers,
william
