I've never understood the sport button:confused:.

I mean surely you'd be using the same amount of fuel at a constant 70mph with the button on or off. If it used more fuel switched on, wouldn't the car speed up accordingly?

It does!....If you drive at any steady speed under 3K revs and turn it on or off....You can feel the slight acceleration / deceleration....Basically it's a bit more throttle per revs up to 3K....So it uses a bit more fuel....

No, basically, it's a bit more throttle for the pedal position. Throttle and revs are the same thing. The sport makes it more resopnsive, so the slights movement of your foot on the accelerator with Sport on will have substancial changes to engine rpm (in theiory), so turning it off will make it less responsive, making the car unlikly to respond if your foot moved up or down a few mm.

I understand what you're saying, and I'm not sure exactly how it works so I won't argue, but throttle and revs aren't the same thing.....You can have 100% throttle with a wide range of rpm....

It all comes down to whether the map in the ECU switches when sport is engaged. From the little experimenting I did this morning, I found that revs and speed stayed the same when I turned sport off, but when I re-engaged it, the engine started accelerating (which suggests I may have marginally changed the throttle pedal position).

If the map remains unchanged, I can't see how it's more economical to drive with sport mode unless it's just as a result of ironing out fluctuations in the pedal position?

Chris

The button just changes the throttle opening for a given pedal position, so in Sport you need to press the pedal less far to go the same speed.

I am sceptical about the 3,000 revs bit now though. Have tried it out of sport mode at 'motorway speeds' where you are a good 1,000 revs above that and there is still the need to push the pedal more with Sport disengaged.

Chris - yep, my take is that without Sport you're likely to accelerate a little gentler on the motorway while maintaining speed and use less fuel as a result.

Very true (y)

:yeahthat: A bit simpler than how I tried to explain it

Last two fills averaged 37mpg, seems to be bedding in a bit.

Going off the mileage on my receipts rather than the car computer though!

Just driven my HP to France and back....got 37.2 mpg on the way there and 39.1 mpg on the way back.

Mostly driven between 80 - 85 mph.

Can only put the difference down to the fact it was blinking windy on the way there!

Simon

Car computer is about 2 to 3 mpg off my odo readings. I know the odo is accurate due to needing to record it for my fuel discount card but I cannot guarantee I fill the tank 100% due to airlocks/spills...
