noooo not a freelander, literally THOUSANDS of problems :bang: and you will probably catch the landrover bug, (this means that you will buy lots of old land rovers and tell everyone that they are awesome, and go to lots of landrover clubs) not good :(:p

and whatcar no good, they hate puntos :(

The S80 D5 has the same engine as the S60 D5, the Volkswagen engined ones weren't too clever, the D5 is a decent engine. The S60 is built on the V70 platform, the S80 is a step bigger and built in the XC 90 platform. They offer superb value for money.

s60 D5 is actually smooth and hell of a quick with 163 bhp easily tuneable to 200hp and a great 5cyl 20v engine which returns over 40mpg

Or even a Golf GTTDPDI or whatever letters diesel quick and economical.

My s40 T4 returns 32mpg from a turbo so what the hell are you doing to the 1.6 even tuned you should get more.

Its not hard to find one, they are plastered all over the net :rolleyes:

The boot on a mk3 mondeo is smaller than a mk2 for some reason, you would still get your golf clubs in though

Dont go for a ghia x they have the naff trim (fake wood in some) and rubbish colour options (beige interior for one :yuck:)

Zetec is the one to have, although do go for a TDCI engined one though
 
You need to be careful buying soomething "executive" in that price bracket. Personally if I went for something in that price range I'd go to one of the last pre fly by wire incredibly complex cars.

You could do a lot worse than an old shape C250 Merc C class, you actually stand a chance of fixing this.

I'd steer clear of a cheap early CDI though.

I know it is the same engine it is hopeless due to the sheer size of an S80

Well maintained... that's the problem. Not many people have the time/skills to be constantly fixing things. On a cinq things are small and easy enough to do. If you get to exec size everything is a 2 man job.

You have to go back a long way to get away from electronic throttles. Just the modern ones do away with the physical cable.
 
You may all laugh at what i am about to say but i dont think you can go wrong with a Skoda Fabia VRS!! (D)

Reliable, Cheap parts and they are made by VW.

Skodas are bland and have no flair or elegance. They do a job of being a cheap alternative to a VW. Something they do very well and cannot be made to look better or VW won't sell any VWs. Check out Seat for what happens when you give a VW some style. I'd the Leon over the Golf anyday.

Anyway German cars being reliable is a myth. They're as prone to German parts going wrong just as much as all the Bosch parts that fail on Fiats and Alfas.
 
I bought a brand new Fabia vrs in june 05 at the grand total of 12.5k I owned it a whopping 6months because it broke down leaving me stranded twice and major things broke on 3 other occasions.

The biggest problem was the brake vacuum servo failure (common apparently on vag hatchbacks :eek:) this caused the brakes to lock on (no ABS!) when I was doing 70mph+ how I didn't crash it I don't know!.

Needless to say it was a great reason to get rid of the f**king car thus traded it in against a Grande Punto Sporting fully loaded and never looked back!. I quite often forget I ever owned a fabia mainly because it was a boring forgettable under steering piece of s**t.
 
I think i have the fiat RTI insurance on my car :devil:

Any car can go wrong, its just that fiat dont pay the press millions to say good things about there cars :D

agree with you. The amount of problems my dad had with his Golf and his 5 & 3 series.... makes my punto seem ultra reliable... Both BM's were terribly unreliable, the 3 series was in the garage at least twice a month
