What are the benefits of porting a box,please?

Hi all
I've currently running a 12" sub from an enclosed box.What benefits if any will I see from porting the box.
Preferred music is hip hop & most things with a fairly deep bass!

Louder upper bass, danger of damaging the driver with low bass, higher group delay so not as 'tight' as sealed, more critical to box design.
