What alarm system is this (and how does it work..)?

Hi guys,

Recently bought a late-2003 Fiat Stilo 2.4 20V Abarth, very happy with the car but i have a question regarding the alarm system that is installed.

I don't know what kind of alarm system it is. It doesn't look like the standard alarm system that comes with Fiat Stilo's(?).

Sometimes when i unlock the car, i hear the alarm going off for about 2 seconds, after that a quick "blip, blip". I can also press the button (in the image above) but it doesn't seem to do anything. Sometimes it's off, sometimes the small red LED inside blinks (also during driving).

Maybe someone has an idea of what system this could be? Thanks.

I can see your Stilo has original Fiat Xenon HID headlamps, not many were fitted with that option.

Thanks for replying. Yeah i thought it would be aftermarket.. How do you know that the car has Xenon headlamps(because i didn't)?

The 2 blank buttons in the middle of the switch panel are for headlamp beam adjustment on cars without Xenon HID headlamps. If your car had normal filament bulb headlamps, there would be up and down arrows on those 2 buttons. It's a legal requirement in Europe that cars fitted with HID headlamps must have headlamp washers and automatic beam adjustment.

The washers rise out of the front bumper when the headlights are switched on and you operate the windscreen washers.

There will be sensors on the front and rear suspension that send signals to the headlamp ECU to adjust the headlamps automatically dependant on vehicle load.

Be careful the headlamps don't get broken. New HID headlamps are £852 GBP each in the UK (~ €1000 EUR).

A good candidate for headlamp protectors. ???

There's lots of things people don't know about the Stilo when they've just bought one.

Have you found the top glovebox? Many people have had Stilos for several years without realising it's there. Some, when they do find it, also find a 5 disc CD changer in there.

Also didn't know about how costly they are. I'll drive extra carefully from now on, hoping they don't break.

Top glovebox.. yeah i found it when i got the car last saturday (didn't notice it while test driving). Also didn't know it had a CD changer (which sadly doesn't work quite wel). Maybe i can built something else in there? I'm planning to change the ConnectNav+ system with a aftermarket (Pioneer, Sony) one since the CN+ doesn't have bluetooth (great miss), USB and a good Navi. But from what i read on the forums here, installing a aftermarket car stereo (double DIN) is not always that easy (steering wheel controls, power, correct fit, subwoofer etc.).

Oh, i also found a storage compartment underneath my seat yesterday (wow)

Thats not an alarm button, it is handsfree bluetooth button, have fitted to my Croma and the wife's Sedici, connects to phone everytime, good system, but of couse may have been removed from your vehicle. Should flash blue when ignition on, looking for phone, when paired will be permantly blue light on.

Genuine Fiat accessary, think metablue but could be wrong, may have instructions in my glove box, will have a look through the junk to see if i can find if you want a copy, you should also have a mike (microphone) somewhere in the car.
I'll see what i can dig out and let you know.

Found something out today while looking through all the paperwork i got by the car.

From what i could read in the booklet i have, the alarm system reacts on the factory vehicle remote (which i didn't get, i only got one key which has no remote). That's kind of a bummer.. I'll ask this weekend at the garage if they can supply me the second key (if there is one, otherwise i'll have to buy a new remote key).

I just realised i haven't said this here yet but i think that the car supports remote unlocking because it has some kind of IR bulb on the dashboard (not 100% sure though, maybe someone has some more info on this?).

Is it even possible to get a new remote key if you don't have the original?

Not sure about Holland, but all Stilos sold in the UK had remote control locking. The remote control fob can also open and close the windows and sunroof (if fitted). There was also a keyless entry (EasyGo) option. A small fob you keep in your pocket. If your within a few metres of the car it would unlock. That system has a Stop/Start button on the dashboard.

New RC key fobs are avialable from a Fiat dealer programmed to the car's security code. About £260 (GBP) each in the UK. A little cheaper if you already have the car's security codes. They are printed on a small card the size of a credit card.

Hmm.. didn't new it was for the CC (yes it has CC installed).

I've read about the EasyGo system in the manual, that 'd be nice, ah well.. can't have everything.

I'll ask the garage this weekend about the price for the RC (!) key. I have the card with the security codes.
