Hello!

I’ve just joined so i hope this is the right place to post! I’ve just picked up a 2014 plate 1.2L Petrol Fiat 500 pop yesterday. I’ve noticed when I’m indicating right the warning lights for the engine coolant/temp and the seatbelt flash. This only happens when indicating right (strangely all is well indicating left!) and they aren’t coming up any other time.

I’ve contacted the dealer I bought the car from and they said to book it into my local garage and they would sort out the payment so I’ve booked it into my local fiat garage tomorrow morning.

I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on what the problem could be, how much the repair is likely to cost and whether it’s a quick job to get it fixed!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

This issue is quite frequently reported here; the cause is usually a failure inside the instrument cluster. The only cure is to replace the cluster, or have it refurbished by a specialist company.

If fixed by a franchised garage using new parts, the cost will be considerable (certainly several hundred pounds); cheaper alternatives are to fit a secondhand unit or to have your existing cluster repaired.

If you fit a secondhand unit, you will need to carry out a proxy alignment to allow the unit to communicate with the rest of the car's electronics. Be aware that you can adjust the mileage upwards when doing this, but not downwards, so you will need a replacement that has fewer recorded miles than your existing one.

IIRC typecastboy has replaced several of these now (not all on the same car, thankfully!)

I did think it may be a rather expensive job unfortunately. Given I’ve had the car less than 24 hours I’m hoping the original dealer doesn’t kick up too much of a fuss re the cost and paying the bill!

I’ve booked it into an actual Fiat garage (the original dealer is 100+ miles away) so hoping they’ll be thorough in their investigations and use high quality parts etc... I’m just hoping it can get fixed quickly as I need the car for work.

Have you already agreed that they will pay for the cost of the diagnostic? Might be a good idea if you're taking it somewhere else for the repair. At a franchised delaership, that could be £100 or so before you even start talking about the fix. A new cluster isn't cheap; list price is about £500+VAT and that's before the labour to fit it. I doubt a franchised dealer would entertain using secondhand or refurbished parts.

But if they do repair it using new parts, assuming they're in stock in the UK it should be a quick job, possibly one that can be done while you wait; it's not a particularly long or involved procedure to swap a cluster.

If anyone reading this wants to fit a brand new cluster themselves, you can get them from Shop4Parts for about £450 including VAT.

Not specifically come to think of it. When I mentioned the problem he just said to book it in somewhere local and get the garage to send them the invoice, I did tell them I was going to book it in at an actual fiat garage though. It is £90 for the diagnostic, ideally I’d like them to to pay that too but I wouldn’t begrudge paying the £90 for the sake of getting it done at an actual fiat garage if they’ll foot the bill for the actual repairs.

That’s a relief that it’s a quick job! I’m hoping it’s smoother sailing from here onwards!
 
£90 for just the diagnostic.... been there done that ?? MES costs €50 then a set of cables! Then you can tell the garage what the issue is ... and maybe even fix yourself... for the price of a part .. sometimes it’s as little as a tenner!
 
Hi I have this issue when I signal right started about a month ago. I have a 2014 500 lounge. It’s out of warranty does anyone know of an approx cost to fix at a garage. I was quoted about £400/500 by a local garage seems a lot. Is it worth just leaving might be upgrading my Fiat soon so thought it might be better to get it sorted before. Any advice would be a great help. Sorry just seen the posts above only just joined bit of a newbie.
Depressed it seems so much especially as I am so skint

Yes, they can be repaired, for about £150. It's much cheaper and easier to justs get a replacement on eBay. Watch my video on Christmas Eve and all will be revealed.
