I nearly binned my car today at 35mph...just went into a corner I have taken many times at that speed if not more, then just understeered towards a kerb backed out gently to try and tuck the front end in and then the back started going. Kept it off the kerbs and facing the right way but on the other side of the kerb were some trees if i'd been in a slightly sportier mood it would have been pretty different, must have been something on the road.

Can happen to anyone tbf..wrong place wrong time and your car is gone

With all due respect though the roads around here are rather unforgiving :)

Back in Australia I was "lucky" enough to spin my dads Peugeot once (greasy road, change of surface and truly ancient tyres) but I was lucky enough to be going onto a very wide road and it did a very graceful 180 spin even though I put a couple of armfuls of lock in pretty much straight away but it still spin. My only concern at the time was the armco on the inside as I knew I wasn't going fast enough to actually hurt myself. Thankfully it came to rest after not long facing the wrong way on the road. I waited for some traffic to go past and pulled over to the side of the road to regain my composure.

I was doing all of 30 or 40 kph but the tyres and road surface just made for an unavoidable incident at fairly normal speeds in a car that is quite underpowered and has very neutral handling.

Of course it was my fault for going faster than the car could go on the tyres and in the conditions around that particular corner and it really is nothing more than that but it just shows how these sort of things can happen at very very low speeds.

As I said in the other thread he really does need to have a chat to his mate and just hammer home the message that the next time might not be so nice.

That spin, a couple of minor accidents and seeing a friend laying on the ground dying after a minor motorcycle accident has made me a much safer driver than I would have been without learning some pretty nasty lessons in the past. Even if you have to have a go at him I'd still do it I'd rather not be friends with someone than have them do that again.

If you've got good tyres and some brains you're unlikely to have a bad accident unless you come across black ice or someone else has an accident and you get caught up in it.

I had a 4 wheel slide a few years ago whilst turning right i'd stopped to give way to oncoming traffic, as i made the turn the entire car slid sideways managed to correct it (thank god) just missing the pedestrian fencing,

then again looking back it was funny to see the chav's who were sat on the fence (outside the pub) move rather quickly when they saw a KA coming at them broad side came off the power steered into it (towards the fence) then eased it back straight then drove like a granny for about 3 months....
 
ive had rear wheel slides most if not all the way around a roundabout due to deisel, was only doing 15mph, but had to keep it going to avoid the metal posts all the way around,

looked the part but didnt half make me slow down around the bends. just luck and uncontrolable fate.

Over here they throw an impossible statement from the Rules Of The Road (must drive slow enough to stop in the distance you can see to be clear, e.g you need to corner at 0mph. Laws of phyics there lads...) to blame the driver for deerstrikes, black ice, split fuel, anything.

I spun a car on black ice, at about 20mph on a (thankfully empty and WS2-grade so four lanes wide) 60mph rated bypass before; had I hit anything I'd be entirely at fault here despite the mitgating circumstances due to that rule.

I do stupid things in the car all the time. Scare myself but rarely learn:bang:

It was only last night on the way home from the stables on some country lanes that I bounced off the curb (doing 40mph in a 60mph zone - those roads are very twistie and it seems im not as daft as I think I am) - went round a corner and a 4X4 coming towards me didnt switch off their full beams :)tosser:). I couldn't see F.A and was maybe doing 25mph around that corner. Hitting that curb scared me as I could have easily bounced off into the oncoming cars.

It frustrates me that no matter how careful I am I cant rely on anyone else giving a damn about my life... on the bike I am that bit more careful too :shrug:

The point is that when a road is being used by more than one car but only one car goes off, that must raise suspicion that the driver who crashed wasn't being as careful as those who didn't crash. Such cases don't always end up with a prosecution because the evidence doesn't always show enough lack of care to enable a successful prosecution.

The ones that do end up in court often show an appallingly low standard of driving. Like the Astra car which contained 4 unrestrained german shepherd dogs, two of which decided to fight each other. One or both of them ended up biting the driver who then lost control and hit a row of parked cars. He saw nothing at all wrong with his driving even though he admitted turning round to hit the dogs without either stopping or slowing down.

I think it has a lot to do with how safe cars are these days. People seem to think when they're in a nice 4x4 or even a small 5 star NCAP car that they'll be alright if something happens :) The thing is nothing needs to happen if people just drive carefully and take others into consideration.....

That is assuming that another persons' bad driving didn't cause the victim to crash without being physically involved themselves (ie being forced off the road in order to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming overtaker)

I think you could easily be driving safetly and lawfully, yet have an accident due to somebody else's recklessness....

Thats the argument i had with a mate who jumped a dyke on a bend in his car... He was all defensive saying the road was icy and how it wasn't his fault.....

Pop the question how many cars came round that bend whilst you was waiting for recovery?

answer "loads"

"How many of them lost control and ended up in the field?"

"None"

The need to investigate assumes nothing beyond the fact that one car crashed and others didn't. The scenario you suggest does happen on occasion.
 
Glad he had a lucky escape etc etc but not the worst posted 'smashed up friends car/your car' on here

Nothing beats liams smashed up cinq to me how he got out alive is still a miricale to me

writing off three cars doesn't have to mean people are bad drivers.. they just have rotten luck.. one of my mates sisters have wrote of 4 cars, yet she has been driving for 18 years... most write off's are due to either bad luck or inexperience....

i have come close many times to crashing... i was driving down a country lane at 60, but i took a corner to fast nearly spinning the car...:( but that doesn't make me a bad driver, just inexperienced....

yeah but if you did the same again, you would be classed as a bad driver ;)
 
Nowt's unlucky about taking a corner too fast for conditions.

Now i cant talk - i like driving fast as does anyone with an interest in motoring.

But I was just pointing out that what you think is unlucky is classed by the police as bad driving. It sucks, because if you have a nasty accident involving more than one person they can and will be all over you trying to get evidence that will get you in court for dangerous driving, or another such offence. Such is the "blame" culture that we live in nowadays :(

And i agree people on here like to jump on everyones case and call them, names telling them something they are when they don't even know them.Then the rest will follow like sheep.

Bet it's knocked his confidence still haven't got mine back from my crash.
