Vauxhall Astra coupe - what do you think??

The astra coupe is a waste of space dude. My mate has the same model type u looking at and its just sooooo slow. Even the 2.2 is only 145 bhp and honestly his old 2.0 mondeo felt just as quick. Personally i would test drive one but there is a reason why the coupe is more expensive. As for running costs of the coupe...... if u buy a well maintained one then it wont cost u much to run. Esp when u look at what ur getting for your money to start off.

but when you look at it from where i am i have drove a 1.2 8v punto for a while so it will be a nice improvment?

To be honest with u dude, i've learned about cars that u cant do things half assed. The astra coupe is nice but its un-inspiring. Honestly. My mate would swap me his in a sec for my coupe. He always asks for a shot. Ur 21/22 ur insurance wont be that bad. The ffcuk club will take care of ur technical needs for the car, plus if u dont wanna mod thats fine, cause on the 20v turbo models u got 220 crazy horses already!

got this from honest john... (about the astra coupe)

Ordinary coupe dull to look at and very disappointing to drive. Rattly, crashy, felt unfinished. Turbo is much better to drive, but all are utterly shamed by the Toyota Celica. Turbo has belt cam 2.0 litre engine. Timing belt and tensioner changes re-scheduled from 80,000 miles to 40,000 miles on engines which have them. Ignition control unit of 2.2 petrol engine is prone to burning out. Exhaust manifold of 1.8s prone to cracking and Vauxhall quote £700 because it contains the car converter.

The only Astra coupe I'd consider would be the turbo one which has 7~8s 0-60?
But insurance would clobber you.

I think you might be hard pressed to get four adults "easily" into one too. I drive a JTD stilo and that has coupe style rear space - but at least comes with a hefty boot and, with the seats down a good load area... now you're old you need to think about practicality too you know ;)

But seriously the JTD is cool. It'd be a good upgrade drive for you, is very remappable, gives 48mpg even when driven like a nutter AND is only group 5 insurance.

Pretty honest evaluation. My mate only bought his for the winter and hes already look at something better cause he dont like it.

i take it that this astra is the post 2000 model?

according to honest john, these are the problems with the astra saloon (same as the coupe, but slightly more boring)

What's Bad
Nondescript , 'hamster'-like road-hugging styling. Ride quality may be too firm for some. Is regarded as 'also ran' to Golf Mk IV and Ford Focus and does not hold its value as well. (This is something for the second-hand buyer to take advantage of.) Water leaks (see below). ECUs of 1998 to 2000 1.6 16vs can suffer from corrosion of resistors. ECUs are being replaced FOC on cars up to 4 years old. Springs fail in rear brake compensators and are not available as a separate part. A new compensator is £150 fitted. Timing belt and tensioner changes re-scheduled from 80,000 miles to 40,000 miles on engines which have them. Timing belts on 4 cylinder 16v engines also drive the water pump which can shed its impeller blades and seize, throwing off the belt, so best to change water pump too. Tensioner bolt which passes through oil pump also prone to fracture, leving belt untensioned and apt to fly off. Reports of gearchange problems with 2.2 petrol. 2.2 16v petrol engine has been known to snap its timing chain due to the lubrication jet becoming blocked, possibly as a result of running on dirty oil due to extented oil change intervals. Ignition control unit of 2.2 petrol engine is prone to burning out. Hesitencey of 1.8s between 1,500 and 2,000rpm now cured by a software download to the ECU. Rear springs can break due to damage by road humps. Overactive alarm fault quite common. Needs new ECU.

What to Watch Out For
Nearly-new examples likely to be ex-rental, so look for signs of careless driving such as kerbing. Check front tyres for uneven tread signifying suspension misalignment. A batch of faulty sealant left some mid-1999 Astras prone to condensation inside the headlights and foglights. If it has aircon make sure aircon blows cold. Lift front carpets and check for water underneath. The cure is either re-sealing the front bulkhead or re-sealing the pollen filter carrier. Blower fans fail. May also mist up because vent flap mechanism has broken. May also mist up because water drips down wiper shaft and soaks pollen filter. See recalls about noisy power steering pumps. The old Vauxhall Cavalier & Vectra steering column failure seems to have re-emerged with the G Type Astra, though Vauxhall will usually pay the replacement costs. One report of premature cat failure at 3 years and 35,000 miles. In this case, Vauxhall paid 50%. Drain plug threads strip on aluminium sumps of 1.8s. Exhaust manifold of 1.8s prone to cracking and Vauxhall quote £700 because it contains the car converter.
Recalls
Depending on source of supply, some models developed noisy power steering pumps. Free-of-charge replacement programme spring 1999. 14/7/2000: 3,008 3-door models built between January 1998 and October 1998 recalled for replacement of front seat adjuster spring which can lose its tension. (Press release received 15/7/2000.) 2001: TSB about voltage spikes from the alternator damaging the camshaft sensor. This is prevented by unpicking the wiring loom and re-routing the cam and crankshaft sensor cables together around the front of the airbox, keeping them away from the alternator. 22-08-2002: 2,436 Astras VIN range WOLOTGF3522184592 to WOLTGF672BO14989 recalled because batch of brake calliper pistons may release hydrogen gas into brake fluid. Where found to be from faulty batch are to be replaced.

I had an old shape astra hire car on holiday (the shape before this) and it was an horrible little underpowered munter.

Granted it wasnt a coupe but from having 1.0 bog standard corsas as hire cars and the top end 1.4 twinport there was no difference in the feel of cheapness you get in vauxhalls.

Get something silly like a v6 calibra if you must buy vauxhall- or a v6 Omega (rear wheel fun)!

I like the astra coupe, have looked at them myself a couple of times along with the same shape cabriolet.......not so common as the normal astra aswell which is always a plus when i look for cars

To be honest the coupe is still a very popular car! My mate thought they werent that popular before he bought one but then he's noticing them all the time. Put it this way. Since i got my coupe 6 months ago i have seen 2 forum members cars and 4 non forum members cars. Thats it. Been lookin all the time and just seen none!

for those recommending fiat coupes over the astra. the astra is just that ,an astra with a smoother body. the running costs will come no where near the fiat coupe in running costs going by the posts on the forum.
there aimed at totally different markets.
im not saying go for either just its not really an even comparison.

also h2yper why have you got a LL post count??

Beast? Its 170bhp with sub 25mpg.

Ross

Well considering he gets about 33mpg with his foot flat to the floor.. i'd say you were wrong there :p

It's got tons of torque but he says it runs out of gears at 145mph...

EDIT: and i have no doubt it's "only" got 170bhp, but that's still a lot in a car that has 5 doors, a big boot and will rarely need servicing
