can anyone point me towards the best spring compressor to use on a mk1 punto gt to do the valves stem oil seals without removing the head.
ive found a few on ebay but not sure which will do the job best.
the reason i want to do it without removing the head is ive just done the headgasket & had the seals dne at same time but the engineer must of done them wrong as it smokes heavily on startup but no other time.
he will redo the seals for me but i dont want the expense of the h/gasket again.

Hi to be honest whenever i have changed valve stem oil seals the head has been removed and I think it would be exstremalydificult to remove and refit new valve stem oil seals properly without removeing the head I cant say i have ever heard of it being done that way before. sorry I cant be of any more help

it can & has been done.
since the stem seals that are on have only been on a few weeks im hoping they will remove easy.
might be hard work but still dont want to waste money on a head set.
at least if i buy a tool its something to keep.
thanx for replying.
guess ill take a gamble on which to try

As the new seals have failed so soon, its likely the valve guides are worn. In which case the head will have to come off anyway.

Its done with a compressed air line connected to the spark plug hole to hold the valves in place. Compressing the valve springs might be a problem on the 16V.

You WILL also need a special valve seal removal tool. They are a struggle with valves removed. Virtually impossible with the valve stems poking out. The valve ends are way down below the hydraulic tappets.

ive got connection for the compressed air line.
the valve guides were renewed then new valve seals fitted. its an 8v.
ill either find someone with the valve spring compressor i need or when i remove the engine to swap into another car ill waste my money & do it all yet again.

i just done the valve stem seals on mine and its much easyer to do it with the head of as if u drop the valve in the cylider your f****d then the head has to come of then anyway. btw you cant really go wrong putting the valve stem seals in anyway u sure it isnt anythink else.?

I've done it once using a modified spring compressor along with some metal bars & a home-made hub puller. With the piston at TDC I had just enough play once the spring was compressed to allow removal of the collets.
I have to say, though, it's not something I'd do again. If the engine has hardly been used since the new HG then it should all still drop to bits without problem. you could also have a tube of gasket seal on standby.
