Re: UT Restoration, New Thread. UPDATED 18/05/07 Bootylicious!!!

Monday 21st May 2007

managed to just about get the boot finished. got a coat of blocker coat on and the smoothings looking pretty damn good! im impressed with myself lol

uno_resto_015.jpg

Theres also been a big development to get hte uno back on the road alot quicker.

with the problems with the paddle clutch not working properly and catching on the inside of the box etc, and me having to take the box, clutch and flywheel down to him in leister (40 miles for me!!) ive decided to make a slight change.

ive had a long thinking session and ive decided im going to fit a standard clutch and release bearing and get it back together. with this in mind, i ordered by 11am today, and was collecting a clutch by 5pm lol

uno_resto_016.jpg

its only a standard one and actually a recon clutch so im not going to have much hope for it, but it will get me on the road

uno_resto_017.jpg

im also going to refit the standard front brakes for now as i can borrow some spares off my mate. going to get them fitted as im having probs bleeding up my brembos etc.

once the standard clutch and standard brakes are fitted, i'll get the rest of the car back together and then the Auto Electrician is coming one day next week to do a couple of bits of wiring and get the car re started.

then its small bits then MOT :D

once MOTed, i will take the brembos to a garage and get them to fit them and set them up cos i cant be arsed lol. also, going to drive the UT down to where i had the clutch from and get them to fit it and sort it out once the unos on the road and ive destroyed the standatd one hehe

sound like a plan or what?? :D

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread. UPDATED 21/05/07 New Plans, New Clutch!

I think the bit i sprayed looks the best on the boot!!

Dont worry Dunc............. if you need me to spray some more just let me know;)

EXCELLENT plan - you'll probably find that clutch will be absolutely fine anyway, why waste time dicking around with that expensive on-off paddle job... I bet the standard clutch was a third of the price. Surely it will only be a problem if it starts to slip when the turbo kicks in? You're going to be driving properly after all, no hill starts in second gear or towing trailers...

Have you got something in mind yet for the engine management system? As I recall you'd refitted standard injectors to get it running - but if you want your bigger injectors you're going to need a fuel-adjuster (AFM signal interceptor) or an aftermarket ECU?

Nice work with the tailgate - but how did you get the window out?! And how will it go back in? Tiger Seal? ;)

Cheers,
-Alex

Yes, how DID you get the window out of the tailgate and how will you get it back in again  I assume that as it's bonded in you must have cut the seal with a sharp knife or used the the 'hot knife' technique?

I've never had to remove or refit a bonded screen so I've no idea how to do it at home.

And nice work with getting cracking on the UT again. Stop fannying around and get it back on the road where it belongs ya big woossie! :D :p

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread. UPDATED 18/05/07 Bootylicious!!!

haha cheers for the replys!

as for removing the rear screen, its fairly simple. pull off the outer rubber seal which surrounds the screen on the outer side of the boot. once u have done this, run a sharpe stanley knife around the sealent which is mainly thicker in the corners, and then just push it out. its very simple.

as for re fitting, well ive not come to that bridge yet lol :D but being as im having a polycarbonate rear window being made, it would have to come out anyway ;)

YAY!! page 100 lol

Thursday 24th May 2007

well, tonite i managed to measure up and make a template for my Polycarbonate rear window and drop it off at a local place that can make it up for me out of 4mm polycarbonate so its the same thickness as the standard window

the circles are where theyre gonna cut out holes for ventulation ;) proper race style lol

Page 38 for me (more posts per page in my preferences) :p

Looking good though!!!

Is it going to be a track only car then? Guess if it rains it gets wet inside??

Also will you have any problems refitting the poly into the seal??!! I'd be worries it's crack on refitting

Great stuff!!!!

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread. UPDATED 21/05/07 New Plans, New Clutch!

you will be able to use string have fitted a windscreen once using this method

put the window seal round the window then put the string in the outer part of the seal place the whole thing on the outside of the tailgate with the ends of the string on the inside then pull the string slowly and it should pull it all together if you know what i mean:confused:

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread. UPDATED 21/05/07 New Plans, New Clutch!

getting there mate!

what problems you having with the brembos?

bleeding them up etc. dont seem to be moving enough fluid to push the pistons enough. tbh, im fed up of trying to sort it now, so back on with standard brakes for now, then get a garage to fit the brembos when its moted etc.

eskimo, yeah i know what u mean :)

Dunc mate, my teachers at college said to me that new or re-con callipers are very hard to bleed but didnt tell me the way to do it! :bang:

Looking forward to seeing the rear window! :yum:

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread. UPDATED 21/05/07 New Plans, New Clutch!

What you using to blead the brakes Dunc? I have a MightyVac which is just a handpump, makes bleading a doddle, costs about £30.

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread. UPDATED 21/05/07 New Plans, New Clutch!

cos theres a shed load of air in teh nooks and crannies of the caliper, takes pressure and usage to get some of it out, otherbits never get any fluid in them:mad:

or is the problem master cylinder not big enough/enough throw?

UT has single piston sliding calipers, whereas Big MoFo Coupe Brembo brakes have six pistons if I recall correctly. UT master cylinder is not able to displace enough fluid to make Coupe brakes work properly!

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread. UPDATED 21/05/07 New Plans, New Clutch!

Sometimes you can bleed a system by pumping fluid in through the bleed screw, never had to do this myself but on some MGBs it's the only way to get a clutch pedal. Its to do with getting airlocks due to where the pipe enters the piston body. I'm lucky that a mate of mine with a garage biz has an eezibleed which he pressurises with a wheel off a scrapped Escort.(avoids faffing about with pressure on your spare wheel) In this case though I would get it thru the MoT then put the 6 pots back on plus a compatible m/c.

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread. UPDATED 21/05/07 New Plans, New Clutch!

i was having trouble bleeding mine also, there was some pressure under the peddle just not enough. it was only after an hour or so of pissing about with them i realised there are 2 bleed nippes on each caliper and not one lol.

yeah, i already saw there were 2 on each caliper hehe.

cheers for all ur replys people :) ive decided to keep the brembos on (4 pots by the way ;) ) and sort it out and get them working :D

right then, heres the update for the bank holiday weekend :)

Saturday 26th May 2007

right, saturday came i was well up for powering on with the uno, but things didnt go to plan :(

heres how the day started, uno in the usual place in the air like it has been for quite some time now, gearbox off and new standard clutch in front set out ready to bolt on :)
uno_resto_020.jpg

but unfortunatly, we had many problems that we dont normally have, lining bolt holes up, loosing bits etc. took 3 of us about 15 mins to work out why the clutch wouldnt go straight on

eventually after about 2 hours we ended up with just the clutch on, hmmmm not very far at all really!
uno_resto_021.jpg

also, on the above pic, u can see how big my turbo actually is, when u compare it to a standard turbo.

anyway, after ALOT of more hard work, we evertually got the box on, with the help of matt, smed and bruce all coming round to offer some support, chat, smoke faggs and eat chips :p

box on!
uno_resto_023.jpg

and heres how the engine looked after this
uno_resto_022.jpg

after all this, we were pretty fed up as things haddnt gone to plan at all, so with that in mind, the day closed with the car looking like this, driveshafts in, hubs/discs/calipers all back on and a great big bloody gear box oily mess under the car  :yuck:
uno_resto_024.jpg

Monday 28th May 2007

well, no work happened on sunday as it was my uncles 65th birthday, so went round for a partayyyy and beer fun hehe :slayer: :yum:

so monday came, and we set off from my uncles early so i could get home to crack on with the UT :)

first job was to tidy the whole garage up which took about an hour on its own! making sure the floor was spotless again :)

so with the gear linkages connected back up, front wheels back on, boost pipes connected in place it was starting to come together :D
uno_resto_026.jpg

as u may remember, i had problems with the intercooler paint coming off, thats cos me being a fool, haddnt keyed the surface of the intercooler and just painted it, :bang:   oops!!!!

so i sanded it down, keyed it up, etch primered it up and gave it some black paint :)
uno_resto_028.jpg

i then got it bolted back on and connected up the boost pipes to it
uno_resto_027.jpg

by this time back up had arrived, and my mates smed and bruce helped me finish off fitting the last bits then told me to fire it up...............

..............nothing at all :( We then checked the wiring and found we had no spark and connected up a couple of things the wrong way, so with that sorted we tried again, but again nothing but this time it turned over easily and sounded like it wanted to fire :) getting there!

this time, we decided that it was out of fuel, so we went with the Jerry can and got a £5er's worth and put it in the tank, but again, nothing :( just turning over and over :( then me and bruce thought that it might not be actually getting the fuel through because it was still on the axel stands and therefore not fuel was actually getting to the fuel pump as there was absolutly nothing in the tank, so we dropped it down off the stands and we could here the petrol run from the reserve tank, into the main tank :D a very good sign! so with this done and a few more turns of the key to prime the fuel pump and get fuel to the engine......it started :D YAY!!!! first time this year!!!! :D:D awesome!!

little vid for u all

so wit hthe car started, i started to put it back together again, bumper back on
uno_resto_029.jpg

also, tightened up the seats inside, cleaned it out, sorted my harnesses ready for MOT, checked all lights were working, and all electrics were working and they all were :D YAY!!

and heres how i left it at the end of today, proper well chuffed :D
uno_resto_030.jpg

left to do now, is attatch the hydrolic clutch back up, then try re bleeding the brakes, and just get another couple of latches professionally sown onto my harneses for the side bits cos for some reason theyre missing one on each side

once all thats done, its a quick check over, then MOT time ;) (y)
