Re: UT Restoration, New Thread, NEW SHELL!!!!! *updated 02/02/06*

its a redued throw matey.

anyway, before i hit the beers thought id start on my rear beam. so got it into the shed and started trying to get bits off! then cleaned it up with wire wool/brush and drill. alot of the bolts have rusted up so i left alot on as u can see lol! anyway, will try harder to strip it tomoz but just wanted to get some paint on it to see.

out came the paint, no where near finished yet, gotta strip the brakes off etc and then paint the whole lot. will also fit my power flex rear buses too! gonna look mint dont u think?

beam3.jpg

beam4.jpg

anyway, also stripped my anti roll bar down, will be painting this silver. basicly, every component under the car will be painted, and the underneath of the car sprayed the same colour as the rest of the car. so will look as good underneath as on top hehe!

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread, NEW SHELL!!!!! *updated 02/02/06*

nice one on the rustproofing manouver.

When you say you are painting the whole shell (inc underside) in same colour, do you mean in top coat type paint, or in the underseal stuff, or underseal stuff underneath and top coat on top? Just top coat on its own will last 5weeks with the amount of crp and stones on the road.

Just take an angle grinder to them bolts, or better still, a plasma torch:slayer:

Well done mate – about time :D!

6 weeks off work for Dunc (y)

Do you think you’ll be ready for Stanford Hall this year? :p

I'm sooo glad I deleted most of your ‘I’m selling up’ thread in Uno section on your darkest day ;).

Let the work begin Dunc! Glad it's all starting to come together. Or at least all the parts are coming together so you can get it all together. If you know what I mean :p

That pic of someone in the engine bay made me laugh. Is this your new motive power? :D

Oh, and the axle beam is looking good, but a bit of advice here. Hammerite claims to have 'rust killing' properties, but in my experience it was never that good as rust nearly always came back.

What I do now to bare metal suspension components is to give them a coat of Zinc rich primer (or Holts anti rust primer). These do a far better job than Hammerite on its own, plus give a good surface base for the next coat of paint. Then coat with Hammerite, and then it seems to hold the rust at bay.

I can't find the link to it (can't be bothered more like!), but you can see how I painted my anti-roll bar and brackets in the Uno section. Mine were painted bright blue

I've also done the same with a suspension arm, but am waiting for some warm weather before I fit it. Yup, southern softie :D

Keep up the good work with the turbo!

Oh yeah, didn't you know that 1 man under the bonnet is equivalent to having a 350 bhp lump? :D

1986uno45S is right about the hammerite, as i sanded down my wheels and painted them with hammerite but almost immediately the rust started coming back :(

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread, NEW SHELL!!!!! *updated 07/02/06*

I think its easily going to be the tidiest unoT around

although you should have drowned everything in rust converter before you hammerited it, as with surface rust on componants it just eates it up and turns it into white paste which you rinse off. then dry then prime and paint, and you will be 'guernteed' not to see rust again for min 20years!!!!

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread, NEW SHELL!!!!! *updated 07/02/06*

my god lad!!! you got off your bun and did something! im in shock... yet i dont actually see u doing anywork

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread, NEW SHELL!!!!! *updated 07/02/06*

cheers for your comments peeps :)

and cheers ally, bah!

yeah, im tempted to redo the rear beam now, and everything i havent done will be getting rust treated first before hammerite painted! hehe (y)

and yeah, i hope too that this will be one of the cleanest UTs around :D both ontop and underneath :D all painted and looking mint!

i did say im gonna work on it full steam ahead now ;)

Re: UT Restoration, New Thread, NEW SHELL!!!!! *updated 07/02/06*

Good idea with the repaint. Hammerite works well but remember that it comes off with petrol and brake fluid. BUT if rust converted first then it really helps to make it last.

Looking sexy though mate :) I cant wait to see the progress reports in the future like when the shell gets fully seam welded and then painted, its gonna be minted :)
