General Used Camshafts - Safe or not ?

Just got myself an 866 cam for my Cinq Sporting. It is in used condition as 99% of the cams used by other members. I was told to be very careful when fitting an used camshaft, specially if there is rust or there is visible use or any kind of markings on the cam lobes.
Please let me know your experiences.

It will be fine, just make sure it's correctly shimmed.
