THinking of buying a used 500 c 2012 with 68k miles. It has had £3k spent on gearbox overhaul. is it safe to buy?

3k???
I had a gearbox replaced for £800 albeit refurbed and a mechanic that I know.
What do they mean by overhaul? And was it done at a main dealer or garage.

Thought so..

Question Is... are you prepared for another £3k.bill in 18months time?

Lovely to drive.. But expensive to fix

It's a complex system... So needs specialist care

If the car is At Least £2k underpriced.. Then maybe risk it..

I don't think a personal warranty will cover a car with nudging 70k.driven..

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The good news is that you've joined and asked the important question before buying the car. Most, sadly, do things the other way round.

Unless you are comfortable with owning a car which could let you down with no prior warning and cost upwards of £3k to repair, then forget about buying any used dualogic 500, end of. They're lovely cars to drive when working properly, but when they go wrong, they become an absolute nightmare.

This thread will at least deprive you of the excuse of ignorance if you do go ahead with this purchase and encounter problems later.

If someone has "lost all the paper work" for something they claim to have had done, then you have to consider that the work has not been done.

Why would anyone say its had a new gearbox or a gearbox overhaul if they know there might be a problem, they can claim the new gearbox is "settling in" or "learning" to address any issues with the box. They could also have had more than the gearbox replaced and the paperwork highlights something like significant undercarriage damage from an accident. but they want to use the selling point of having had a new gearbox.

Fiat's with auto and robotized automatics can be very fussy and expensive when they go wrong. The car could have been in an accident or could have been badly mistreated in the past.

If its very cheap and you can afford to take the risk and lose money then the choice is yours, as someone who has been on this forum for years and is very confident when it comes to taking a risk on a car..... Even I would still walk away.

Thanks for being so candid. So glad I joined this site even though I won't end up with a fiat
