Un-plugged ECU

Hello,

My Bravo went into my local garage today to get its thermostat done. I was going to do it and wanted to do it my self, but I was only quoted £40 labour for the job. As I've got 2 essays to do for UNI I thought it was best to get it done ASAP in this cold weather.

Haveing just been round to pick her up, Fiat has sent the wrong thermostat! ooohhhh!

Whilst looking at my car with the bonnet up in the rain (which I'm really pissed about) I noticed that the mechanic had unplugged the ECU.

Does un-plugging the ECU have any implications for the key codes or the general operation of the engine?

No it'll be fine. Really no need to disconnect the ECU anyway. Should just disconnect the earth terminal.

they unplugged the ECU to replace the termostat, which is nowhere near it, and nothing to do with it?
Thats a new one on me. Next they'll be jacking it up and taking a wheel off to swap the headlight bulbs! haha

The ECU on mine, 2001 1.6, is fairly close to the thermostat, although you could easily unbolt the bracket and push the ECU to one side for more room.

I would ordinarly do basic work on the car myself as I have a small garage and live near Bury. Bury has many scarp yards!

Buzz, dont be saying things like that mate, my old mans new mitsu colt has the acess panel for the main beam bulbs in the arch liners!!! pain in the ars* of a job to do with it on the deck i can tell you

The 1.6 ECU is in the way of the thermostat.

You HAVE to move it. (well, except on mine as its not in the stock location any more..)

The 1.6 and 2.0 is the only engine bay i've never worked on. does it show? lol.
and from what i hear elsewhere, car manufacturers seem to be making bulb replacing harder and harder to access. wtf is that about

so that most people will give up in frustration and send it to the dealerships to change a bulb..

I think or maybe the Mark 1 1.6 has a different engine that the Mark 2 1.6, and therefore the ECU is in a different place.

My Mark 2 1.6 has its ECU about 5cm away from the engine block. I would find it impossible to get at the thermostat bolts without moving it.

I really hope unpluging the ECU has not caused any problems! I have taken some relief from J's posting.

The ECUs are in the same place.

If the battery has been disconnected (and you'd be hard pushed to get the ECU out without doing it) then disconnecting the ECU won't have had any effect.

Thanks for that Tom. I will sleep tonight!

Does the Mark 2 have a different 1.6 engine to the Mark 1? The fuel and power figures look to be different on Parkers tech info.

Same engine just tuned slightly differently and geared differently.

oh right thanks. You are full of knowledge. I belive Fiat have done a good job, as I find mine powerfull for a 1.6.

The 1.6 is a good engine, just don't be scared of lots of revs!

Mine is on 117k, due for its 3rd cambelt soon and will be needing a new stat before next winter.

Gosh 117k is quite a lot. Mine only on 46K, although I do drive quite a lot so that will change.

The cam belt on mine is the next job for me after the stat.

Did you know there are 2 stats for the 1.6, one seems to have an extra hole in, perhaps for a sensor.

Oh right, I have a Mark 2, and mine new stat has 2 holes. I gave my reg and year and they still gave me the wrong one.

I was thinking of plugging it, but decided not to risk it. So I have to wait again.

Also, those hose clips are a real pain, and do you think that my engine may have suffered from being driven cold due to broken stat?

Haha Will...

Don't ask Tom (or indeed Ash) do you know about anything regarding the 1.6 engine, because...

yes they do!! :) haha just made me laugh thats all, dont take it badly :)
