ECU light comes on only under load - 1998 Brava 1.6

Hi guys,

1998 Brava 1.6 16v.

the ecu light comes on as soon as the car is moving - after the engine has started it will rev freely without the ecu light illuminating. As soon as I let the clutch out and move off the light comes on. If I take my foot off the throttle on a motorway , the light will go off again, and come on as soon as I touch the throttle.
From memory, the last time I had an ecu light problem (injector...) the light was always on as soon as the engine started.

Any suggestions very much appreciated!

Its a sporadic fault that only happens while in some conditions. Can be the clutch switch, throttle potentiometer ...... Best would be to get a diag done.

I've been working away from home, but have phoned a Fiat/Alfa garage near where I live, who can put it on their diagnostics system when I get back,

Probably would go to Fiat for the diag they'll have both arms off you and then tell you they have to take the engine out.... Most local gargaes now carry the ECU Diag machines and it should only cost £25-30 where as at Fiat it'll like be £60+

Hi Karl,

this is what I kind of assumed, so the garage I contacted was an independent Fiat/Alfa specialist in Bury St Edmunds - who quoted £30 inc vat. (My wife has inherited the Brava from me now, and I've got an Alfa 156 2.0 TS, so it's useful to have found these guys anyway.)

I actually wanted to get Fiatecuscan to have a crack at this myself - but the ECU in the Brava unfortunately isn't one that's supported by it.
